  • Can we clean air filters by ourselves

    Hi Gurus,

I want to know whether we can clean the air filters all ourselves using the tool kit provided along with the bike. If any one has attempted or did it successfully, can you guys post it here with photos. It will be useful to everyone. My ride is a Pulsar 150 dtsi.

    Query Approved.

I don't suppose there is any specific "tool" provided in the tool-kit to clean the air-filter element. Ofcourse, the tools can come in handy while opening the slot where the air-filter fits, but after that you'll need to clean it all by yourself. And yes, it is very much possible to clean the air-filter yourself.

Yes you can clean yourself, this is how you can do it :

      1) Remove the filter from the box.
      2) To half a bucket of water add two shampoo packets.
      3) Let the filter drain over night, wake up next morning you can see whole the water filled with dirt.
      4) Take the filter out and wash it with plain water or rather scrub it, and let it dry in the sun for 2 to 3hrs.
      5) Once it is dry oil the filter not much 10 to 20ml will do and drain the excess oil, for 2 strokes you can use 2t oil for 4 strokes engine oil would do.
      6) Replace the filter back in the box.

This method is applicable only for foam filters, for pod filters the only way you can clean is pressurized compressed air.

Most of the infact all service centers usually clean the filters with petrol and put it back, with this method even tiny amount of dirt in the foam filters vanish away, so cleaning interval will be less and your bike breaths better.

Shampoo means not car shampoo the shampoo which we use for our beautifull hairs, why shampoo coz its a soft compund so i doesn't makes the foam rougher or harder, if you use detrgents or powders the foam gets harder.

psycho, why not just use straight petrol to wash foam filters and oil it when done?

Seems odd that you'd want to wash an oily piece of dirty foam with shampoo when you can do it with petrol or another suitable solvent?

u can use petrol. but not kerosene or diesel for sure. Doh kero or diesel can disolve the dirt but will not fume out from the filter. so it will choke the filter coz u r going to oil it too.
Honda ppl says never use petrol or any thing to clean the air filter, they just advice compressed air to clean it. Coz they say if u use petrol then it might catch the fire while starting the vehicle.
LM, BMC, GreenFilter, K&N need water for cleaning.

Honda Dio has got foam n so activa. but uni has got paper type. Paper filter can be cleaned only by compressed air. not by using any liquid. it has to be dry.

Ok i have a Honda Unicorn and it has a paper filter.
                        cleaning it is very easy.

                        1.> Open the seat
2.> open the filter chanber after removing the 4 screws
3.> use compress air to clean it or if you don't have access to it then follow my steps

drop it on the floor 3-4 times. it will shake off the dust or particles stored in tight spots.
After that simply blow into the filter.

i've been doing this from the last 5 years.

                          A lil OT here......
guys I opened up the filter chamber, based on every one's input. Ok my question is in the air filter is in rectangular shape, but in K&N it is conical in shape...how do we connect these two...

edit : So when I opened up the airfilter I could feel the surface as oily. so the airfilters are always supposed to be like that. Why I am asking is that in the previous posts it is told to clean it in water + shampoo....so this will remove the oil completely and also the dust, I assume that this is the reason (correct me if I am wrong)

Stock filter is Low Pass filter.
                            K&N is High Pass Filter.
Stock Filter fits in Air Box.
K&N filter directly fits on Carburetor.
When u want to fit K&N u will have to remove your full air box. U can't use two filters at one time.

I wish you'd just answer the question. I don't have a foam filter to experiment on or I would have tried.

I used to wash the foam filter on my RX with petrol and oil it with 2T. I wash the K&N on my car with water as advised. I think its odd that a foam filter be washed with shampoo - which is why I asked.
