but the second thing I noticed is that when I pressed the foam filter I felt its surface to be oily. I suppose it is not supposed to be like that right.....

I got the point that we cannot use two filters, question was can we fit the K&N directly into the airfilter box.....but that too is answered.....Originally posted by Chinmay Dangre View Post

You don't have to remove the full airbox to fit K&N.. You could attach it to the intake pipe directly within the airbox.. but need to remove the filter plates for fitting this..Originally posted by Chinmay Dangre View PostStock filter is Low Pass filter.
K&N is High Pass Filter.
Stock Filter fits in Air Box.
K&N filter directly fits on Carburetor.
When u want to fit K&N u will have to remove your full air box. U can't use two filters at one time.
Here is a pic of my bike's fit for reference:

The other metal sheet is an arrangement made by my mechanic to keep it in place.. Coz if the bike hits some hard potholes or so there are chances the filter may get loose and dust enter carb, to avoid that the top is attached to this metal sheet and screwed to the air box capOriginally posted by pavanchirmade View PostWhat is that white coloured strip seen in this pic of the air filter? I am talking about the white strip starting from the top of the air filter
For ug2 model(I don't know what's the case with other models) The lower portion of airbox cap is needed to lock the side fairing, but if we put free flow filter and close airbox there won't be any significant effect of the filter.. So I had to cut upperhalf of the airbox cap so that filter could get all the air it needs and I could lock the side fairing too

It is supposed to be oily. A little amount of oil helps in trapping the dust particles. Like psycho mentioned, after cleaning the filter, coat the filter with engine oil.Originally posted by balajidiwakar View Postbut the second thing I noticed is that when I pressed the foam filter I felt its surface to be oily. Nio,
Effectively you are reducing the free flow property of the filter by using your stock airbox, drilled or non drilled. With such an arrangement, you will sound fast, not exactly go fast. The only upside IMHO is that your K&N won't get stolen. On most occasions K&N works best mounted directly on the carb. Ofcourse, tuning the length of the intake will matter if you want maximum performance, but then, that is another story altogether.

Hi nirvanOriginally posted by nirvan View PostI wish you'd just answer the question. I don't have a foam filter to experiment on or I would have tried.
I used to wash the foam filter on my RX with petrol and oil it with 2T. I wash the K&N on my car with water as advised. I think its odd that a foam filter be washed with shampoo - which is why I asked.
Are u using the 2 reagents from KN to clean the filter or are u using only water

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
Everyone talks about whether they can use this or that but do you know they are oils specially designed for air filters. But the sad thing is I cannot find a motul air filter oil spray in the Motul oil shop. Funny thing is when I asked him about it he said there is no such thing like Motul air filter oil and he said to use kerosene or petrol but when I showed it from my cell phone he laughed seeing it standing inside the Motul shop saying he never saw it other than fork oil, engine oil, chain oil.

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
All manufacturers recommend using either ordinary motor oil ( same as that in the crankcase ) or 90 weight gear oil for oiling airfilter foam elements . Kerosene is specific for cleaning solvent . These works plenty fine too . So there is no market for special airfilter oils in India and none of the major motorcycle or oil companies have this product in market here .

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
Dry paper element airfilters may be cleaned up a bit by blowing with compressed air from inside ( the clean side ) . Take care to keep air nozzle atleast 6 inches away from the filter surface else the element shall be damaged . Better use professional compressed air setup available at servce centers . Remember that paper element filters are not designed to be cleaned as such and should be replaced in time . Also care not to get them damp in any way - then they have to be replaced immediately too .

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
Thanks @Pinaki and @Cleaner. I will give it a try. By the way one of friend owns a HH Passion and he tells me he got his air filter changed around 20K Kms, but for me it seems to get choked within 5-6K kms and the Yamaha SVC people tell me to change it. We both live in Pune and in city limits. Are these SVC people fooling around with me?
