Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
5-6k is way too less for Air Filter to be replaced. Which bike do you own?? Also, check yourself the condition of Air Filter.Originally posted by ani_iceman View Post

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
devils_friend I own a Yamaha SZR 150cc. I have currently changed it once @6K kms(thats the stock filter). Now I am 11K on the odo.
The symptoms were that the bike was misfiring a lot and the throttle seems to slip like when I was revving it was not responding and eating away petrol like anything. The SVC people told to change the Air filter then and told me to replace it every 5-6K kms. However now till 11K kms I havent felt any such problem. Keeping fingers crossed. :P

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
Pune isnt that dusty region. When you change the Air Filter, the misfiring goes of? Misfiring can happen for lot of reasons. Check your manual, there will be a mention about replacement of Air Filters after certain Kms. By no means Air Filter has to be replaced so early. If the bike is eating too much of petrol, there is a chance that the AFR is on the richer side. Check the condition of Spark Plug and you will come to know if the AFR is right or not.Originally posted by ani_iceman View Postdevils_friend I own a Yamaha SZR 150cc. I own FZ-S and i replaced the filter @ 12k kms. Although, the old filter didn't give me any problem, i changed it as a precautionary measure.

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
devils_friend .. Thanks for the advice. But it was consuming too much petrol when the air filter problem happened. Now its fine, I get a modest 40-42 kmpl. FZ-S and SZ-R share the same engine. I read in some blogs that a particular lot of SZR's had some problem with the air filter getting clogged too early. Not sure that mine belonged to the same lot.Originally posted by devils_friend View PostPune isnt that dusty region. When you change the Air Filter, the misfiring goes of? Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
HeroHonda Passion has oiled foam airfilter , which is not to be replaced until it is physically damaged . It has to be serviced around every 2000 kms ( more or less ) and reused . With proper care that airfilter element lasts years and years . What kind ( type ) of airfilter is used on your bike ( SZR ) ? you have to confirm that first of all ...Originally posted by ani_iceman View Post... By the way one of friend owns a HH Passion and he tells me he got his air filter changed around 20K Kms, but for me it seems to get choked within 5-6K kms ..

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
Then it is not comparable to your friend's passion air-filter , which is of a different type entirely ( reusable oiled foam element ) .
The normal replacement cycle for dry paper element air-filter of your bike is around 10000 kms of use in normal conditions . Cut that in half if you live in dusty and/or humid conditions . In-between changes they may be carefully cleaned a bit superficially in the way I said earlier ( compressed air nozzle at 6" on the clean side
) . Getting them wet with water or oil also means immediate replacement . Prolonged storage without use also spoils them because the paper element has tendency to absorb atmospheric damp .
It is ok for your Yamaha service to replace it when they did . They must have found one of the many possible defects that may arise with this type of filters and wisely chose to replace it . There is no way to correct and reuse paper element air-filter once they become defective .

Re: Can we clean air filters by ourselves
Thanks Pinaki. anyways its still seems to be ok since i have done 5K kms after getting it changed(1st change @ 6K and now ODO is just over 11K). I was thinking that the SVC guys cheated me or something. But now after your reply I feel I wont be needing to change the SVC afterall. BY the way can we fit some other air-filter which has less maintainance cost?Originally posted by Pinaki View PostThen it is not comparable to your friend's passion air-filter , which is of a different type entirely ( reusable oiled foam element ) .
