  • [Help]: Warming-up procedure for bike

    hello guyz,

usually when i start my bike in morning(cold start),i leave it idle with choke ON for initial 1-3secs, the idiling time takes about 1-2mins, and then i start riding it.
now, my mechanic told me that warming up the bike by riding it at lower RPM makes less harm to engine, then leaving it idle for minutes.

what is the correct technique of warmin up the bike?
what should i do to warm up the bike without much damage done to engine?

Like the mechanic said, leave the bike to idle for a few minutes ... It definately increases engine life... Don't use the choke unless necessary ... If it doesnt start, use the kick a few times ... Also get the tuning checked ..

It is true. But keep rpms strictly below 3-4k and ride in lower gears and hence at lower speed.

If we keep the engine idle, what happens is that the engine runs at 800-1000rpm for some time till the engine warms up and reaches 1300 rpm idle speed. This low speed idle is harmful for the the bike. Same reason why we should not keep our idle speed too low like our mechs love to do.

yes i keep the RPM strictly below 3K for 3-4kms it rarely touches 3K mark, loos like i follow optimum methid of warmin up the bike..

What if I start and rev the bike to 3k rpm on neutral for 2 minutes?
            It would harm the engine??

No, it should not. But why simply rev the engine. You may as well ride the bike! But, just after starting, give the engine a moment to circulate the engine oil to the different parts! Just wait for a few seconds and then rev/drive the bike within 3k rpm till it warms up. (About 5 mins)

Start bike - wait minimum 30 seconds to 1 min to let the oil flow normalize and for the engine to come up to temperature and the oil also - Ride for the first few mins keeping the revvs in check, and your engine will not get damaged. you can rev it to your heart's content after that.

^^ I would say 15-30 sec max idling - enough time for the oil to circulate to every part of the engine. Anything more, you are simply wasting fuel. Also, idling is not the most efficient form of warm up, driving slowly is.

when I start my bike in mornin...I kick twice with clutch pressed and ignition off... then I switch on the ignition and then start my bike. And then for around a kilometer I dont rev it hard at all....

Kindly also shed some light on whether there is any difference in starting 2-stroke and 4-stroke bikes on a cold morning...

Both should be the same except that 2 strokes will warm up quicker and hence can be revved earlier.

I have a P150. I have tried upto 10 degree C. It works fine. Below that, maybe choke will be needed. And in other seasons, it fires up instantly in the morning. If this is how my bike behaves, I expect these new gen bikes with FI, auto choke and other techs to perform flawlessly at any temperature.

Thankyou "Abhijeet0808....N times"(Sorry me, I cant remember how many 08's are der) and "JD6666" that was very informing!

Now this is what I do everymorning when I start out of my house.
First of all I am used of giving a sweet kiss on her forhead (visor of my R15, dont tell me its WEIRED), then I put in the key and turn it to ignition, start the bike and sit on it struggling to wear my helmet and gloves (it takes 20sec atleast to do it all properly), then I shift into first and start off, happily strolling between 2.5-3.5k rpm and on 2nd-3rd gear for few kilometers!
Then I make her come Aliver and she make me go happier!!
