  • 6v HID - Help Me Sourcing

I have a Bullet STD 1980 Model, I was planning to put a H3 HID into a spot light bcz the distance stock headlight throws is not satisfactory.

So can anyone help me sourcing a H3 HID of 6v preferably in Bangalore??
I tried in couple of shops but couldn't find any.

Yeah, but neither the HID's were made then for automotive. Never heard of 6V HID, have you?

Better rewind the coil to get 12V!

That will cost a bomb, will have to change coil , wiring harness, battery, horns, RR unit and donno what more.

                    I have an idea .
Put a step up transformer (which will step up from 6V to 12V) just before the HID's ballast.

Will that really work or will it fry the battery

Hey, transformers work on AC, not DC! What you can do is to use a transformer and step up the voltage from the stator coil to 12V. Now, use a 12V RR unit. You should be set.

But better to upgrade the whole system. You will have reliability.

Else, another option is to use a DC-DC converter to change the battery 6V DC to 12V DC for the headlight. But, I don't know if they are available to buy in India.

I would defiantely recommend, chainging the whole setup. You can get the coil rewinded, make custom wiring and use some bike's RR Unit, that way it would be much more reliable.

Ohh.. Forgot that Transformer works on AC .
                            My idea.
In this case we can take a connection parallel to battery charging connection and use Step Up Transformer (6V to 12V) + Rectifier (AC to DC) + Filter (Remove the ripples) + Regulator (Eliminate all the ripples and make output to fixed DC voltage). We can use a switch which simultaneously connects (closes) the coil and the transformer & turns on the lights (HID in this case).
This is my only my idea to avoid a coil rewind. It maybe meaningless but iam learning about bike electricals slowly.
