I still can't do a knee down. Neither do I try much on public roads / highways / ghats.
Some really pro riders here doing amazing knee downs. Salute to all of you out here for your amazing skills and pics. I understand cornering is not an easy art.
I am not a track guy. I am just a tourer , but I do love corners
A Yamaha SS125 doing extreme lean angles on a hair pin bend scrapping the foot pegs.Kindly do not try on crowded roads.

Hey guys, looking at some pics, I sometimes wonder, was that specific body position (with knee out) really necessary? I am not saying that getting your knee out is unnecessary but if you see some pics, it looks like getting the knee back in wouldn't have made any difference to the bike's lean angle. Look at bobisbacktorock 's pics above. I think he has leaned pretty good but his knee is still in (in fact, I know his body and head position needs to improve) but he was still able to lean that much. So, shouldn't we be getting the knee out only after the bike has leaned to a certain extent? Because before that extent, what difference would knee in our out make as the bike would still be leaned the same?

Actually knee downs are not necessary, whats necessary is to redistribute the total weight such that the centre of gravity does not change for the bike. By getting your body out of the saddle to to the side, the centre of gravity is changed and the bike can change direction with much more ease, this helps in reducing the lean angle of the bike. The knee downs are genearally used by riders to gauge the actual lean of the bike, so as not to help maintain a safe lean angle.Originally posted by hss View PostHey guys, looking at some pics, I sometimes wonder, was that specific body position (with knee out) really necessary? Got it prat bhai, I was on my way to college so didn't try it that day. I will keep in mind your words next time I attempt a knee down.Originally posted by prateek2210 View PostBuddy, wrong body position. You are able to get down because of your height. Take your bum out of the saddle (left as per pic), keep your toe on the pegs and then bring the knee out.

Dropping the knee into the turn helps reduce the lean angle and yet give a tighter line.Originally posted by hss View PostHey guys, looking at some pics, I sometimes wonder, was that specific body position (with knee out) really necessary? The reverse is, for the same tight line, you're less leaned over. Lesser the lean, better the traction, quicker the throttle roll-on and faster is the exit speed.

The more you keep thinking about the knee-down, the less likely you are to be able to do it. Focus on your line of entry, entry speed, brake pressure, apex, roll-on and exit speed and you'll eventually put your knee down.Originally posted by RSM2852 View PostI was trying a knee down but didn't succeed, was almost down though, hardly an inch away from tarmac. Any tips on doing this properly, I wasn't uncomfortable at all though.

I live in Surat, Gujarat.
I slept one night dreaming about a track day. When I woke up I had a msg from my ex which read, "When was the last time you did something for the first time?"
I registered for Honda Racing the day, packed my bags next week and left.
I never felt more alive.__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _______

Actually, I felt much better after the crash.
Imagine being scared of something. So scared you limit yourself much. And then you finally face that fear. Sure the crash hurt me. Put me in pain. But it did not kill me. And what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _______

Re: The Art of Cornering captured on camera. (Photo Feature Only)
Very true! I am carrying 2 steel plates with 8 screws in my right hand for last 1 years and 9 months as the Radius and Ulna had been broken badly(0.5 and 0.9 inch gaps respectively) due to an accident caused by a big pothole. But that hasn't stopped me from munching 14000 odd km.s in the meantime on my machine. 95% of the people I met after the crash advised me to quit riding but I didn't. I came back stronger.A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.
