you can do it with Digital camera also, but the exposure is not much controllable. Mine for one is taken from digi cam, don't have a SLR yet. Esp try out "Night Landscape" mode and highest exposure

You need control over shutter to adjust exposure times which is there in some Point n shoot, Bridge cameras as well.
