Yup, try that and also do sharpen the picture one step using Photoshop or Picasa. That can make a world of difference.

    • It's soft because the focus has gone beyond the infinity mark. Common problem with newer lenses. Switch to manual focus, lock it down exactly at infinity and try again.

        • Crop it down with a portrait form factor with just the sun, the post and some leaves. (Just before the dust mark). Would make the framing look a lot more interesting.

          • What do we mean by locking it at infinity?

            Synn common man's language please.

            • @Synn, is this fine or can you do it for me once so that i can get a clearer idea?

              • Your lens has a focus ring with markings for different distances. The last marking is an infinity symbol.

Older lenses used to have a hard stop here, meaning you can't focus beyond that. New lenses actually go a little beyond, which makes long distance focusing a bit dicey. Switch to manual focus, turn the focus ring to make sure the infinity symbol coincides with the focus indicating mark and you're good to go.

                • @Synn: I believe Bandhav is using a digital camera. Digital cameras do not generally have the markings on them (on the body or on the lens). Focusing manually would be his best bet to get sharp results when shooting something like the Moon, I feel.

Ah, if it's a point and shoot, nothing much can be done, I'm afraid. But aryan is right. cheaper Zooms tend to be softer at the ends. Zooming out a bit would sharpen the results a bit. Not of much use if focus is off though.
