Actually, its not as simple as that... usually, the highest MTF resolution of a lens is at around 1-2 f stops above its max aperture at a given focal length. For most consumer lenses, the sweet spot is usually around f/8. Above that, the resolution starts to drop the more you stop down... diffraction induced softness starts to creep in... and so do chromatic aberrations..

DOF on the other hand is a totally different thing.. its the depth of the area (both in front of and behind your point of focus) that will be in focus. DOF increases as you lower the aperture.

@mG1, I'm sure you must be well versed with all this, however, i chose to clarify here for the many upcoming photographers among us who refer to this thread

    • my recent experiment of using the new depth of field or stacking images feature in photoshop CS4.

this feature was available for CS3.but now they refined and retuned the action part in this feature.this one is specially useful for macro photography though it may be useful everywhere.

both the images were taken at F8.a common photographer sense will tell that i can achieve this at F16 also.but with the raynox even F16 is not that tact sharp.so this feature is the easier way.there are 3rd party software mainly helicon profocus.but the cs4 is fast.

both the images are a combination of 4.each quadrant of the final image has a split DOF which was manually adjusted.and i am loving this.gotta try on insects.

and a long way to go.

            • Hi all ,

I am new to photography . Just took few snaps with my new Panasonic Lumix FZ 28 . Don't know if this deserves to be here or not .

All these photos are re-sized using Paint application . Please suggest me how to upload the actual size pictures .

              • @ anvancy : Lovely macros! Would love to see them in 1024x768 kinda size

As for CS4, you already got it

How much better is this compared to CS3? Is it much heavier (read resource hungry) compared to CS3? Will it run on my 4yr old laptop? (Centrino 1.7ghz / 1.25GB ddr / 60GB hdd) How can i get one too?

CS4 is more fast than CS3.smoother workflow.infact i am finding CS4 eating less resources.
it will hard but to run CS4 on that machine.

as for where to get it..simple..google..the rest will come.

you can look at my photostream at flickr for bigger pixels.

                    • @pradeep:welcome to the world of photography..

one more DOF technique CS4 photo..this time my lappy.

                      taken at F2.8 SPOT METERING.

taking at that aperture also makes it easy for PS to actually subtract the bokeh part and keep the sharp part.so combining again 4 images of each DOF quadrant and stacking them..i get this beautiful image..and yes..still long way to go.

                      • @anvancy: will this technique will increase DOF or narrow DOF to get a feel of DSLR? slightly confused. Or do you need to focus on different areas in different images then you stack and eliminate the bokeh?

its not eliminating the bokeh.its stacking the images at macro level to make them sharp.you make them more sharp.

Oh.. so the focus can be on the same spot and per pixel sharpness will be more. Am i right

@pradeep- exif will be helpful to comment. Fotos are overexposed and thats why the moon spots are invisible.
