  • [Ownership Thread]: Mahindra Centuro

Took delivery of Centuro on 27/07/2013 Saturday.

    So far completed 280 kms.

    Background:
Since past two months was looking for an in-town commuter bike. At hero stable test rode Achiever and XPro. Almost booked XPro, then Mahindra launched this bike with almost everything in it, except a disc brake. Just booked one without even a look at it, with a condition that will took delivery after a thorough TR. Dealer understood my concern and agreed. Paid Rs. 2,500 as booking amount.

    About Centuro:
Bike size is good with 120 kg kerb weight. Engine layout almost like Honda cd series engine, appearance exactly same. Stroke length also same at 49.5mm, only bore is different at 52.5 mm. instead of 50.0mm.
Fit and finish level is satisfactory, not as good as Hero or Honda but each and every individual components quality is far superior than other manufacturers bikes in this segment including Hero and Honda. eg. Tyres, switch gears, grab rail, chain guard, bulbs, plastics etc.
Bike's handling is excellent, mind you this words coming from Unicorn rider. Engine pulls nicely with good amount of torque. Exhaust sound is throaty. Gear box up shift is as good as splendor but down shift is quite notchy, have to wait and watch for few K kms on Odo.
Rear brake bites well but front drum is spongy, not to my liking. Mahindra engineer's answer for this is "it is intentional to avoid unnecessary front wheel locking while braking hard". But I am not happy as I will use front brake 70% rear brake 30%.
It seems like very good FE bike. I got 74 kmpl when riding between 50 and 60 kmph. Seating ergonomics is good for my frame(5'9" 85kg) and suspension also nice.

So far so good will update periodically. Yes enjoying all the features. I think the car like key fob may break over the time as in bikes we have to twist hard to lock the fork.

Thats all for now, any questions?

Congrats on the new acquisition. One thing that has been intriguing me since the day I saw the pics for the first time - do those golden pipes serve any purpose or they are just ornamental? How's the seating and ergonomics?

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Thanks. Since this is an inclined engine like splendor there is a gap above the engine. Hero choose to fill the gap with plastic tool box. Mahindra can't do the same thing right? So they are filling the gap with this bars. But they are rigidly fixed metal bars. Seating and ergonomics are comfortable.

            Update: 400 kms done.

Thank you. In TN it is 52k. I took when it was 51K as it is within first 10k booking.

Hi Babu, Is the first service done? how is your centuro performing after the service? I am keen on buying this bike, but worried on these factors:

                        1. Brakes - I felt they were grossly inadequate, even at slower speeds. How has your real-life experience been?
                        2. Service costs, spares prices & availability - Are spares available freely? I think it makes sense to stock up some basic stuff like tail lamp reflector, sprockets, clutch plate, piston rings, key/locks/tanklock, gaskets/rubber/rings etc which are unique to centuro (if not now, in the future) for any future maintenance if spares availability is a concern. Can you pl. share some insight here if you have inquired about the same? Will help if you list the prices of some common parts?
                        3. Warranty - Any conditions / restrictions on the 5 yr warranty? What are the service intervals? How many free service are provided? Is it mandated to have all services (free & paid) only at hero showrooms like how Hero warranty requires?
                        4. Fuel Efficiency - Current FE of 74 kmpl is great. My worry is that it should not come down as we go along. Any feedback from other bike owners? I am yet to find one on the roads here in Bangalore.

I spoke to a show room guy last week. He claims the FE quoted by users is 65-70kmpl. The scary part is, the actual numbers sold is 7-8 (not clear if it was only him or the entire showroom). Looking at ownership feedback here, you seem to be the only one owning it as yet & I am probably the only one who is interested in buying it.

Will be great if you can update on the points above & your ownership experience here regularly.

PS: would be interesting to build a compatibility list for the spares (i.e., spares from other bikes which can be used) for the Centuro

First service done and only paid for oil. My first service performed by the owner of SC. He did very well and spent 3 hrs on my bike itself. You can definitely go for this bike. Below my replies in bold.

Not bad. After put on few kms. it is manageable and used to it. The rear brake and tyre is quite good to compensate.
So far no skids or wheel lock even at rain.

As per the SC owner the parts will have no problem. Prices of parts have no idea but I believe it will not be very high as Mahindra is our desi brand. They know it will spoil their progress as a two wheeler company because of the stiff competition.
                          3. Warranty - Any conditions / restrictions on the 5 yr warranty? What are the service intervals? How many free service are provided? Is it mandated to have all services (free & paid) only at hero showrooms like how Hero warranty requires?
Here I like Mahindra again. I have completely read the warranty policy of 2 yrs. std. and 3 yrs. extended(FOC) warranty total 5 yrs and 60k KMS.
There are no hidden clauses that deny warranty. Each and every part covered under warranty including Digi console, unlike hero which will cover only engine. Only exemptions are wear and tear of parts and accident repair.

                          4. Fuel Efficiency - Current FE of 74 kmpl is great. My worry is that it should not come down as we go along. Any feedback from other bike owners? I am yet to find one on the roads here in Bangalore.
After 1200 kms., I have increased my speed range between 50 ~ 70 kmph. In this condition I am getting solid 70 kmpl. Inside city at moderate speeds it will give you sure 65 kmpl. At initial 500 kms the gears down shift was bit hard, now it is near perfect. The bike is very smooth even after 60 kmph speed.

I spoke to a show room guy last week. He claims the FE quoted by users is 65-70kmpl. The bike already huge hit in TN. Sub dealer in my town already delivered 8 bikes and has 50 bookings, the buyers scolding them like hell to deliver the bikes fast. Here it is going on 25 days booking.

Will be great if you can update on the points above & your ownership experience here regularly.

Now I am running on Castrol power1 15W40 oil. Will update the effects of SS oil after few tank fills. The company recommends Castrol activ 20W40 for Centuros.
PS : I have no fake Castrol oil issues, as the ASC also happen to be Castrol authorized distributor.
PS: would be interesting to build a compatibility list for the spares (i.e., spares from other bikes which can be used) for the Centuro

Yes, it is better to do so.
                          Cheers.

Achiever is good but you cannot compare it with Centuro as it is 150 cc bike vs 110cc bike.
