    Suzuki GS150R sudden mileage loss

    Hi all,
    I own a Suzuki GS150R, 2008 model, 33000+ kms done.

Few years back Suzuki mechanics told me that the clutch plates are ruined (after an accident), and so i got them changed. The bike was okay. After that, my mechanic advised me to use only 20w40 engine oil for the bike whenever i change it. (Previously used some castrol engine oil, which was the only one available in the place i lived while studying). Now back in bangalore, he filled it with Valvoline 20w40 oil. But i felt a major let down in power, NOTICEABLE down in power. And this time I tried Shell AX7, rode it for 150-200 kms, and now my bike is awesome again. Very smooth, low engine noise, smooth gear shift, good power, far better acceleration. But mileage has come down to around 25 kmpl from 35 kmpl in city. And when the fuel levels get low, the engine revs in 4000 rpm IN IDLING. (Does no happen when fuel level is higher). Also, last time i got the engine oil changed, only around 400-500 ml oil drained out for just 1200 kms. I wonder if the engine is burning the engine oil. Please help. I love this bike and i don't want to let it go.

    Thanks.

This is the spark plug that has run 7000 kms (CR6HSA given by ABT against CPR6HSA/CPR7HSA). Looks okay ? AFR setting is stock.

The old chain has "stretched" by 1 and 1/2 links ! Odo is at 205xx now. In the picture is also seen the new 'Diamond Kit' Rolon chain (waiting to be fixed). Rolon's chain looks and feels really beefy compared to the skinny OEM DID !

Cleaned the old chain with diesel .

    Can you provide these details:
    1. Year bought and present odometer reading.
    2. How do you calculate mileage - full tank or reserve to reserve?
    3. Parts replaced till now like spark plugs, air filter, etc.
    4. Grade of oil used.
    5. Are the wheels rotating freely off the stand?
    6. Details of the tune-up done by you and SVC.

Maybe once in a month everywhere over the bike except the front disks. No more buying diesel because my aunt already had a mouthful of it when i stored it in a soft drink bottle. My main stand already broke at the place it touches the ground. Absolutely because of rusting. I have welded it.

Thank you, I shall start doing that too. Yes, my GS' main stand has started to rust too.

Sorry for the late reply. I did not login for 2 weeks. Did not get time as I became father for the second time..
It will be more difficult now to maintain my babies and spend time in the parking. GS is already untouched for 3 weeks now.

That is okay. Congrats Anand ! Double the fun, responsibility and affection from now on.

Anand, can you please share the Diesel/Kerosene bath protocol for your GS - Mine is rusting badly (due to salty air, ECR is visible from my Balcony) at places like fork tubes, stands, etc. On what parts do you spray, how often, kerosene or diesel? I already have the saloon-guy-sprayer.

    Hi All,

Hope your doing good and enjoying your ride.

I have been riding GS since last last two years clocking 26000 kms. i had never accelerated my GS more than 8500 rpm till date and the top speed I got was 115 km/hr without pillion. I did not find it necessary and also not found a opportunity to rev fully.

Today, I had new milestone of speed on my ride. I was cruising on NH-4 from Pune to Kolhapur with pillion (me 70+ pillion 65+luggage 15-20 (approx)=150 kg approx).
I was breezing with more 8-8.5 k rpm all time and speed of 80-105 km/hr.The NH-4 was just empty in the morning and I got an opportunity to rev >>9000 rpm. I found that it speedo started clocking more than 115-120. There was a time when I was at max speed of 126 km/hr on a flat road.

My point here basically torque of machine and then speed. Considering the overall weight on the motorcycle (& bike weight itself), 126 km/hr speed was impressive figure for me. The motorcycle was stable and no hiccups at all. Believe me I cover the distance 240 km just in 3 hours 40 mins with 3 short halts of 5-10 mins. There were incidences where guys on CBZ and pulsar were desperate to chase us but they couldn't.

I am only doing regular check ups with known local technician. I have not yet even changed air-filter of bike. I had few issue with machine noise, I went to Suzuki but I realize they are just ****ing idiot and just take money from you. After that I did not turn up to Suzuki ever. Now engine noise is ok and it is getting low.

I have prepare a removable luggage carrier to my ride and that is with just 250 Rs. It can easily sustain weight up to 30 kg. I will share the pics in my next post soon.

This is just an update guys, things can be different from bike to bike. But overall this best bike on highways.

    Best luck and enjoy!!

As far as i came to know there is no specific NGK plug for GS. Also i get a low mileage of 25-30 under heavy riding.Heavy riding as in when the roads are free i touch 100 - 105 constantly.
Is this fuel efficiency normal. What is the actual efficiency others have got under the same circumstances.

Your suggestions would be much appreciated.
Hello Raghu13raman, how nice you got a GS in such a good condition! The spark plug for GS is CPR6HSA or CPR7HSA, if you can find either. I use CR9EHIX for performance reasons (I had trouble finding the aforementioned projected-type plugs in my country anyway!). The thread size IS IMPORTANT with GS the way it was designed. I tried CR7HIX (non-projected type) and the results were not good, the bike would feel out of breath after only 6000 rpm.

Fuel efficiency can go from 38 to 70 KPL as far as I know, depending on how hard you are willing to push your GS. Some people religiously upshift at 4500 rpm and that keeps their FE real high. Always keep your carb and fuel lines clean, proper tyre pressure and fresh engine oil and your bike should run like a champ without much other maintenance. Around sea level, our GS should reach 110 Km/Hr without any problems and with a 35-45 KPL fuel efficiency because it is not like you are going faster than 100 the whole time.

Let us know how things go with your GS.

    Gil

    Hello Everyone,

I have suzuki GS 150R. I have driven the bike 38K till now with original MRF tyre. Now I wanted to change the reartyre as I faced many puncture issues and reartyrehad 7-8 patches.
Below is the specification of Tyre.
Tyre Specification: 100/90 R18 (Alloy wheel)

Can you please suggest me is it ok to use tubeless tyre or Tubed type tyre for GS 150R which having Alloy wheel (the original tyre was MRF tubed Type tyre)?
And which tyre company is best to use?

    Thank you in advance!

In that case I can't see any reason why you would get that sound. Make sure to use correct gauge. The clearances might have been setup like 0.06cm instead of 0.06mm or something like that

Yes this is the first time i adjusted valve clearance. Only 4 free services were performed at SMK Suzuki Service center. Not sure if there were any tappet adjustments during the free services.
All other services/maintenance were performed at home or by a mechanic nearby. Mechanic or me never tried to do tappet adjustment before.
The bike was parked for a week for painting petrol tank mouth, underneath the tank, visible parts of frame, cleaning the water drain path in the tank, topping up battery water. I performed the adjustment after the engine was shut down for more than 10 days. So definitely a cold engine.

Ride the motorcycle for 20 kms to give it a proper warm-up then check for the noises.
I will do that over the weekend and check for changes.

A scary incident happened after refitting the parts.
I almost set my bike on fire. After blown fuses, i could not guess the reason. I directly connected the battery without the fuse. All of a sudden, the wiring smoked with plastic smell. Asked my mom & wife to run out of the house. Switched of the engine and allowed the smoke/plastic burning smell to clear. Found that the wire from the horn to the wiring harness beneath the tank is severely burnt. The reason was I accidentally screwed the horn wire to the frame. Traced the wire and replaced it. Now the wiring is back to normal.

For our 4-stroke engine Top Dead Center(TDC) will occur twice in one combustion cycle. i.e. you will be able to see the 'T' mark twice in once combustion cycle 1) at the end of compression stroke 2) at the end of exhaust stroke. You want to set your valve clearances at the end of compression stroke (When both valves are closed) and not exhaust (When exhaust valve might not be fully closed)

See four-stroke engine Wikipedia for a nice animation.

Try the entire operation again with addition of a small check as below:
    1) Ensure 'T' mark visible in the magneto cover inspection window
    2) Move the valve tappets by hand and notice the play
    3) Rotate the crank by 360 degress till you see 'T' mark again
    4) Move the valve tappets by hand and notice the play.
    5) If the play in step 4 is more than that in step 2 continue with adjusting the gap to suitable value now.
    5) If you feel play was more in step 2 than that in step 4, rotate the crank by 360 degrees again and continue adjusting the gap to suitable value.
Yes the 'T' mark will appear twice. There was no play in the tappets during the appearance of T and after a 360 degree anti-clock wise rotation, the 'T' mark appeared again. This time, the clearance was what i mentioned in my previous post.

Will there be difference in the models ? Mine is probably the last batch of GS (August 2011 purchased) with the old headlight and body panels. It also has a different gear ratio, different number of tooth in chain sprockets and a smaller exhaust hole.
