    Re: Bmw G310GS

I would say wait for KTM 390 to launch and hope all issues in 310 are fixed and then you can test ride side by side to get a better picture.
I was waiting since 2015 for KTM to launch the 390 adv, we are closing in on 2020 and still there is no concrete news on the 390 adv.

when the G310GS was launched, i picked up a first lot bike (aug 2018) and have been happily riding it so far and clocked closed to 11k kms. Yes, the bike is overpriced for sure, but once we cross that mental barrier, its a good multi purpose bike. its well built, looks good, got good ergonomics, suspensions is supple, can handle bad roads and light offroad with ease, its decent on highway, good for cities likes Bangalore which are dotted with potholes and humps, and i find it fun to ride even in twisties. Before deciding on the baby GS, i took 3 test ride of himalayan, but could not like that engine. Found it to be too harsh. The only other option available was versys 300 which did not interest me as i had the versys 650. baby gs had a decent engine with smooth gear box and light clutch. brakes are just about adequate, could be better. The engine is not a pocket rocket like duke 390, and takeoff are gradual, but the gearing is good for pottering around as there is feel of good low end torque. some issues were there with stalling at slower speeds, but BMW is worked on mapping where its suppose to take care of that. Another downer is the engine has decent amount of vibrations esp beyond 6k rpm. further up, the rear view mirrors become blurred. all big singles have vibes, but i feel KTM 390 has it contained much better. There have also been some issues reported with many riders such as faulty battery, alternator issues, issues with bulb fusing, headlamp socket burning, etc. so seems like electrical on the bike is a weak point. Also the service and spares costs are on the expensive side and availability of parts - an area of concern. hopefully with time, these glitches should improve. Bike is fun on bad roads and small roads of any type, but on the open highway, one would feel lack of power, esp if used to faster bikes. barring the power factor, its a capable tourer with good luggage carrying capacity, upright posture etc.
i am happy with my decision and enjoy the bike everyday to commute and weekend dose of breakfast rides. sharing some pics.

Installed Radiator guard on my GS few days back, I think it is a must have as its prone to damage as nothing is provided in stock bike.

Just 3000 kms after oil change now, motul 7100 used to hold up good with 6000ish kms change interval on my ns. One from Bmw is by shell.

Meanwhile got drenched in rains for the first time with Gs, monsoon would be the time to enjoy with it !

Do share pictures and an ownership thread if possible.

Would love to see how a half century old BMW has fared in Indian conditions.

This means they are not able to sell it.
That is at least a 6 months old bike or even more since it is not a mass market one.
But this also gives an option for those who do not want KTM's bonkers Duke 390 and want to settle for subtlety.

Yes, stocks have piled up due to sluggish auto sales from last 3 months that every brand is facing. Even the leader Honda lost so much sales

Though for one the G310GS/R are top notch product, I absolutely loved every second while riding the bike. I'd buy one just for the sake of it expect for the few issues that still need to sorted out like below ones,
                    1. Possible impending launch of minor refresh with adding the RT slipper clutch from the RR310, the sale representative was trying his best to convince me that the RR310 and GS/R are 100% completely different bikes and in no way they are related what so ever and saying that engine looks completely different from outside saying its more squarer(I was like try harder). We need a bit more transparency on product shared platform, will there be a fully faired G310RR?
                    2. The sales and service network with only 1 dealer available in all major big cities is a bummer. Atleast here in my city there is no proper parking place even to park the customer bikes. Customers are not even allowed inside the service lobby to see their own bike getting serviced!
                    3. Exorbitant BMW taxes like Apple tax like the hidden handling charges within the Road Tax amount, extended warranty almost cost equal to cost of engine rebuild of KTM D390, expensive RSA and expensive average periodic service as seen by the service bills shared and long term service cost is still a mystery. Will there counter sales of parts for a DIY person like me?

Yes the product is premium BMW and they don't want to dilute the brand image by selling it every Tom and Harry but at the same time they want to sell 2000-3000 units a year combined but still have just have 1 dealer per city for service, it will definitely not work in the long run.

Until I've a bit more closure I'll continue to wait and see what D390 Adv brings to table and if the BMW situation improves.

Thats a guard with really large hex holes which may allow small pebbles to pass through. Wonder what shayadri guys were thinking while designing that. A guard from adv tribe or zana would have been more effective i feel.

I am considering to buy this bike for long trips occasionally with a pillion. do you guys feel i should wait for KTM 390 adventure?
main points i am considering are
Waiting for ktm 390 adv is a good option if you are not time pressed, if yes, 310gs is a decent bike. I got sick of waiting for 390 and bought the baby gs. after 15k kms i concur, 310 gs is a good multipurpose bike and i have a feeling it will be better then 390 adv except for the power factor and excessive vibes at higher rpm. Of-course not to forget the expensive price tag. Quality of bike is good, except for some electrical issues on many bikes, which i am sure they would have looked into in the newer lot. If you are not a speed thrill seeker, can live with a relatively docile bike and dont mind spending a bit more, go for it. Its made well and nicely put-together, is very upright and comfortable for rider, ok for pillion, and can cruise at 90kmph all day without any care. The stance is good, the suspension is good. Service in Bangalore is a pain point with single outlet and expensive too. Altough 310 gs is a good bike in itself, see if u can wait for 390 adv, as that will definitely be better value for money. 310gs will give you exclusivity as the bikes are hardly selling.
Hello people just wanted to know that is the oil really well upto 10000 kms...if yes, i am suprised...10k is a really long time and liquids do detoriate with time and kms...soo does it live well for that long...?
Yes, the oil holds pretty well for 10k kms. Even i had my doubts, but is just ran and ran and ran. Think we should be more worried about the air filter in our dusty riding conditions. Anyhow, BMW has introduced a checkup every 5k kms and main service every 10k kms.

This means they are not able to sell it.
That is at least a 6 months old bike or even more since it is not a mass market one.
But this also gives an option for those who do not want KTM's bonkers Duke 390 and want to settle for subtlety.
Not at all. Last two months sales have been 0 for all across India. BMW missed a point by pricing it so high and even the discounts and 0% interest rate schemes cannot help sales. India is a value conscious market and the proof is 650 twin interceptors selling like hot cake at 3L. 310Gs will go into books as a decent product failed due to bad pricing, average service and expensive spares.

They did not want to lower the BMW brand value and image by pricing it at low price, now they themselves are spoiling the same brand value by giving close to 10% discount on ex-showroom price and with barely any sale with stock pile up of 6 months+ !

They could have started off with that discounted price ₹40,000 less as the ex-showroom price from day one and it'd have sold like hot cakes!

This is a part of BMW India. They also price their cars higher than usual and tend to give discounts.

Hope BMW comes to it's senses and takes customer feedback in to account and lowers the price like Kawasaki, reduce the spares and service cost and improve the service reach in coming years.

I really like this bike, even though I might never be able buy one, I personally want to see this bike win and take off in the market like the D390, Dominar and Interceptor's.
Not just survive on ventilator in ICU with it's oxygen mask on and die a slow death over the years like the Mojo and old Continental GT 535.

I love the S1000RR and BMW brand as a whole but I want this to flop massively so that they learn how to and what to do with anything they launch in India.
We are price sensitive market. Yes, there are extremely rich everywhere but that's rare.
One has to sell products to bring money to bring more products.
To sell it in numbers that are required to call it a success, you gotta price it like how it is meant to be.
