  • Hey guys,

My brother on my recommendation had poured the MOTUL Fully Synth 5W40 in his engine around 4 months or a 5K kms back. He had checked the oil level and topped up a 100 - 150 ml after 1500 kms. But he did not bother to check it for the past 3.5K kms. I just chanced to open up the oil cover and was shwll shocked to see it all empty and bone dry. After scolding him, I though it would have dropped to some 200 - 300 ml and started pouring out from a can of Petronas Sprinta. It happily gobbled up a whole can. Looked in and still no sign of oil. I poured in another 2.5 litres of the same oil and just now the level is half the crankcase. I have asked for another litre to pour in. This brings me to a few important questions:

    1. Why is it taking more than a litre of oil? I till now thought that the engine oil capacity was only 1 litre. Not 4.5!
    2. What could be the long term damages? Till now I do not find any signs of seizure. It still runs fine and gear shift is as good as before.
    3. How can I check if there are no major issues inside the crank? Is it ok to pour the engine oil - Petrona Sprinta 10W40 for filling the crankcase?
    4. Last, any one else faced this issue before?

Also I had called up TVS guys on Friday to complain about my RTR 180 sprocket requirement and spares situation. I recieved an email today, probably due to my earlier contacts. It goes as follows:
    Dear Mr.Aparajith,

We are receipt of your complaint regarding the spare part for your RTR 180 bike and we are arranging for the part .kindly bear with us. Sorry for the inconvenience caused in this regard

Please send your contact no for our further communications.

    I replied back as follows:
    Hi Xxxxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for the concern. I have been trying to get the spare for the past month or so from all the dealers in Chennai with no luck. I checked at RAMKAY and they seem to be having some 250 back-orders for the part. I have even tried sourcing it from other states through some contacts and the story is the same elsewhere. I request you kindly look into the matter and do something about it.

Please do inform me as soon as the spare is available as the kit is worn out quite badly and needs replacement ASAP. My mobile number is : 0000000000.
    Lets see what they do..

      This is strange!!!!!
another member (Mr. Sarvajit) once told me that the this engine (he has FIERO F2) gobbles up synth oil, but your bike digesting the whole oil is strange..
i'am running on petronas (synth) and my bike didnt comsumed even 50ml after almost 3000kms.

How much kms old was the oil???

After pouring in the litre of petronas, did you checked the level by screwing the dip stick fully? cuz filling oil more than the max level is NOT recommended, cuz the sump will take another litre of oil after the max level.

Kick the stationary bike with ignition off, and if the piston movement is audible then it is screwed,it'll show some level of "hardness" at the kick too, plus check for the black smoke if coming out of the end can.

Check the plugs colour too, after burning the litre of oil, it must have turned black badly with tip burned off too.

Pouring the same grade of oil is ok, diff grade is not, i'll suggest you to take it to the mech and get the engine checked by the experts eyes.

did you measure how much oil was left by draining the old one before pouring the new oil ?

As I said, it was totally dry! No oil at all. The dipstick was dry when it came out.

My oil was 4500 - 4700 kms old as I mentioned. Am using the same grade only. No changes in that. Its xW40. Am checking using the dipstick only. It still has not yet been filled. I dont see any black smoke/harshness or any funny noises. Will check the plug color today. Since I have almost filled the oil, and I do not see any harshness till now, I will complete filling oil and run it as such. If any problems, let me wait for it and see... Best part is that the bike still starts with just one crank!

i hope bike was on center stand when you measured it

you should have measured how much oil was left by draining it . dipstick is not a very accurate method to check how much oil engine is drinking.

Starting in one crank indicates no siezure at all, cuz if the piston was screwed it would havenever started in single go, i guess you were lucky.
              Do check the plug's colour.

Of course... I have done these things on my Pulsar as well! I thought of checking oil level. I never expected it to drink so much oil. Thats why I cud not even stop it in the middle.

I would recommend you to first drain all the engine oil that you have poured and then refill 1 liter only as if you keep driving your bike with this insane level of engine oil, it will again harm the engine instead of doing any good to it.

Switchin from mineral to synthetic oil after long engine mileage is not recommended coz it then starts drinkin oil in most cases n your bike doesn't seem to be drinkin but gulping it

kindly get the piston rings replaced asap in order to avoid similar situation arising again and damaging the bike's engine

                      • Okie, all u guys were right and I was a fool. Drained out all the oil today and poured in oil till it reached the top level of the dipstick. In all it took in around 1300 ml of oil. Was totally bone dry when I filled in. Replaced the oil back in the can as it was all still golden in color. Plug was not black or anything. Normal chocolate brown... So am happy at the end of day!

hey sunny i switch to FS after riding almost 32000kms on mineral oil there was Absolute No issue even after using synth oil for more than 3500kms . No drop in Oil Level and i used this synth oil in extreme condition like 42c+ temp and most of the time was riding above 7.5-8k RPM (104-109kmph) and after using synth oil(2cans) (for 7.5k kms) i again switch back to mineral .
As per my Experience Castrol Power 1 (15w40semi synth) and Petronas 10w40FS suits well for RTR .
Its not enough to know how to twist the throttle; you must have judgement to know when and where to do it.

                              • I dropped my bike(very slowly) which resulted in scraping against the wall and the windshield is scratched on the edge. I saw 2 people getting it buffed and making it as good as new. Can anyone tell me how this was done and where I should be looking out for to getting this done?
