    Re: The Honda CB Twister

Sorry for late reply....Last week bike suddenly got stalled in midst of traffic in city.. tried to start it but it refused to. While I checked the spark plug it was soaked in oil ( I didn't change the spark plug since I purchased it). I changed the plug, bike started again and still I find oil residue in spark plug. I know engine maintenance is due. Any body has any idea how much it is going to cost? ...and until this problem, I had no maintenance with the bike, changed oil in every 4000km ( I know it is too much). Changed air filter twice. Chain and sprocket every 12000 kms, battery changed once.Never the bike failed on me. Never used kicker to start it all this time except the first month of purchase.

In the past 4 years, the bike has hardly managed to cover about 10k km. It was mostly lying in the garage and the battery drained out. Since dad was not going to use it very often, he refused to get the battery replaced. Now that the bike is back in my care, I first had the battery replaced. I am also looking at making a few other repairs to the bike. Also, I read that the Twister was discontinued. Will we still get the required parts? I might need a cone set replacement as well as front and rear brake pads. I'm open to any other advice on caring for the bike (maybe fork oil replacement and the like).

When I handed over the bike to him in 2012, I was getting roughly 350km on a full tank(8 litres minus reserve) which translates to about 50kmpl. Right now the bike returns about 280-300km to a full tank plus reserve - an abysmal 37kmpl. My RTR used to return about 39kmpl even to the last day. Having a 110cc returning that mileage doesn't sound right.

I have no idea what has caused this issue. I had a rapport with the old set of mechanics at Dhruvdesh Honda in Yelahanka when I was taking care of the bike. I went there recently and was disappointed to see a completely new staff in action. So I'm inclined not to trust them right away.

Could you advice me on how I can start resolving this issue?

    TIA.
get the carburetor, fuel filter cleaned. you may have to clean/replace oil filter if was in garage for long time without oil change.

The standard set of checks applies here. Air filter, spark plug, carb tuning etc. Any other symptoms which you feel is odd?

Could you post a pic of the spark plug tip?

    Valve Clearance

My bike has crossed 25000 kms and I have never once got the valve clearance checked.

The maintenance schedule in the manual says to get it checked every 6000kms. I asked a mechanic to get it checked but he suggested from the engine sound that everything seems fine and there is no need to check the clearances.

So is it critical to have the clearance checked? What are the chances that the clearances may have altered during these 25000km usage?

wow....congrats on completing 100000 km. it is very likely piston rings are worn out. A compression test will indicate the same. need to take out piston and inspect all engine components. would like to know what all the maintenance carried out on your twister and other parts replaced during this long journey of 100000 km.

Wow , one lakh kms is great service from the engine . I expect that the bore is worn a bit by now and so consuming oil . You can confirm this from service with a compression test . Also spark plug shall have oily soot . If it's so you'll need to change the bore-piston kit soon .

Yeah , best to stick to 20w40 - it even has lower cost , better lubrication property , better stability and longer service life than 20w50 . You can always get 20w40 Servo 4T from Indianoil pumps or Yamalube SL 20w40 from Yamaha service center , excellent oils both .

Never cleaned carburetor or spark plug, Jerking is there since past 1 year been working on it but could not solve. If I am gentle on the accelerator there is no jerking.

And the jerking started after I started to do long trips from Pune-Nashik. (245KM) Done 6 trips so far, back and forth.

I will get the carburetor and spark plug cleaned before this weekend.

20w40 is the recommended oil grade.

I could't find 20w40 Motul oil so decided to try 20w50 oil. Performance/mileage wise didn't notice any changes. Will switch back to 20w40 this time around, if not Motul then maybe Shell.

No . Engine have been running on very rich mixture and have carbon (sooty) deposits on plug , exhaust etc . Correct the condition and run the bike - preferably a open road high speed run . That should burn off the carbon by itself . Clean the plug if necessary . You can add a pouch of Addon-P available at indianoil pumps ( Rs 9 ) to petrol @ 1ml per liter for a tankful . No other worries .
This is why I don't like choke cables - better to remove the cable altogether if choke use is infrequent and it can be operated by hand for those few occasions .

General recommendation for drain interval on any motorcycle is 3000kms or 6 months , whichever comes earlier . Follow this for any oil , quicker change if bike is running in severe service conditions . Why 20w50 in Twister ? That's not the correct grade for the bike I think ?

    Choke left ON while riding!

On Thursday I started the bike after a 2 week break and noticed the fuel level had come down to midway on redzone. 2 weeks back fuel level was above reserve and the bike didn't run, fuel robbery is ruled out so I just ignored this one time occurrence but decided to keep an eye on fuel level when bike is left idle for long.

Then yesterday I noticed that after riding the bike for 40kms since hitting reserve, the fuel level had reached almost to the bottom of the redzone! So I checked for any leakages and found that the cable for choke lever was malfunctioning! The cable sleeve became loose and when the choke is closed by pressing the choke knob, the choke lever on carburetor wouldn't go back to normal and hence the choke would be active all the time! Also the carburetor drain line seemed wet (can't be water).

So I guess maybe the engine has run for around 100kms with the choke ON.

Had noticed the change in exhaust sound too but ignored it as the bike was started after long period.

So my query is that is there any harm done to the engine cause of this choke being left ON? Current odometer reading is 23000kms.

Also what is the oil replacement interval for semi-synthetic oil (MOTUL 3100 20W 50)?

My 2010 twister has done 31700km today ,

Doing well, gives me 58-60 average for office commuting.

Only replaced front and rear tyres at 21000km
    and Air filter at 25000km

I need your advice guys :
    > Whenever I accelerate i get jerk (like the one when we let go the clutch ) ,
When I serviced my bike this weekend and asked about the problem, the garage person told to replace chain and sprocket.

But I checked the chain and sprocket, they are in good condition. (Slack in 20mm)
