  • How to be a race engineer?

Hi..i have just joined the xbhp and am excited to see every topic related to motorcycles being mentioned here.please dont get me wrong, but i am not posting this just for the sake of starting a new thread...i will complete my mechanical engineering this month and a question has been bugging me since i joined for it..how to be on the technical side of racing.?i love the way engines are tuned and bikes are being set up differently for different purposes.please dont think that i am looking to get into a race crew straight ahead.i even have no idea how to get started and have zero experience..had searched for it everywhere.there is specialized courses abroad, but not here..i thought this would be the best place to post this thread ..i just love racing and dreams to atleast take part in a race one day,but i know that in india, sadly racing can not be a full fledged profession.so i would love to follow a career related to racing.i am from a middle class family.so wouldnt have much of financial backing.a job would help me support my dream of racing(financially)if it means working with motorcycles, what else could one ask for?there are plenty of other options which would earn me better pay but i just want to be in this field.i am not it in it for the money.it has been my passion all along.i would like to know how does firms like red rooster racing,or ten ten racing select their crew,?its on experience basis for sure, but what should i do to get that experience?where should i try to join as a stepping stone to that?even if it means working as a trainee with no pay.is there any courses related to that in india?where should i begin?dont even have a clue..hope that someone will reply to this soon..thanks in advance

    Query Approved

It's good to see the passion in you to follow your dreams, instead of just filling your pockets.

I really don't know what's the scene here. But I would say contact the teams in India and work on a no pay (or such like) basis. Build up your contacts and your knowledge and maybe you just get a good break.

    Anyways, all the best

Re: How to be a race engineer?

I would advice first become an engineer (not just an engineering grad). Things they teach you in college and then job in some oem automobile makes you a fine manager, but not much of an engineer.
If you already think you have good understanding of materials ,concepts ,distribution of forces and load distortion etc and can imagine things in 3d working inside your head. Such as gearboxes, bearings , chassis etc. Then make your own designs and proto parts, not just on cad and calculation part. But in india if you plan to go big , then you will have to make proto samples yourself aswell. Cuz cad design is very crowded segment in india.
When you have a part which is better than what is currently being used in racing, then you can approach the teams chief engineer or manager. In ghis whole process you probably will spend good 20yrs of your life and blow your dads cash to zero.

This is the hard way, easy way would be get placed in a reputed oem automobile manufacturer. If you are that good at engineering, you will find a way to racing anyway.
You're never lost if ya don't care where the road is headed

I think its better to pick the easy way..designing a better part, that too from a guy like me would take atleast a few years.theoretical knowledge alone wont be of much use at this level.no offence, but how to know whats being used now,and how to be familiar with current technology?without knowing the current drawbacks, how can one design a better one?anyway, thanks for that piece of information.

Identify a popular mechanic within or outside your locality; work under him for sometime to gain knowledge from basic to intermediary; then find an upcoming rider on the track who is really talented & convince him/her to use your modified motorcycle to make to podium for once & use that as trumpet card to promote yourself. Congratulations, you've become a race engineer

In addition to above, improve your vocabulary skills & proclaim yourself often with most complex words & terms
Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle
Awareness + Skill is what keeps you out of harm's way
ATGATT + Awareness + Skill means you might Live To Ride another day

Re: How to be a race engineer?

Hello Thamps !! I am a mechanical engineer too and I made this choice out of my passion towards automobiles. I agree a lot to what Aargee sir has told but allow me to put up a few words.

                1. During my final year I had taken part in one of the most reputed national level racing events that happens almost every year. I suggest you should get along with it during your college days and after your college is done you may fill the alumni form to stay in action with them. Here's the link Welcome to Baja SAEINDIA 2014 . I hope you can go ahead and work out the details.

                2. Try to find out a mechanic near to your place/college and pay around 2-3 hrs everyday to his garage. You will learn a dozen things in a week !! Work there for free and have a separate suit/cloth to work at the garage.............. I mean "get your hands dirty". This guy will be of further help when you will be participating in the above mentioned event.

                3. You should shift to Chennai (the moto-racing hub of India) as soon as you are done with your final year exams and try working your luck as suggested by Aargee Sir.

                .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...........................

On a tough note though, I will state that in India we have very limited scope of racing and forging a Career on the lines of a race engg will be a very tough call. You may otherwise also try to go ahead to pursue MS (USA) through JRE or Meet up at DAAD - Office New Delhi to check out the prospects of education in Germany. You may also try your luck to see if you are eligible enough to avail a discount in the fee.

Whatever may be the circumstances do keep your spirit high .............. All the Best

Looks like the easiest DESI way to do it.may look simple, but i think its the closest to reality in here. I will look into the details and links given above.thank you, aargee and xpranav for that piece of help.

For a start check here. I doubt that any institute in India has anything on the lines of what you looking at.
They specialize in manufacturer specific tech training also. (Motorcyle Mechanics Institute - Motorcyle Mechanics School | UTI)

Congrats dude.well, motorsports engineering being completely an alien topic here in india, can't speculate about its details.but sure it will have a lot of job oppurtunifies..even if you come back here in india, given the present boom in motorsports, you will have ample oppurtunities,I think.
                              Do post the details here.
