TOKYO: Japan and India signed on Wednesday a bilateral free trade agreement that would abolish duties on more than 90% of trade for 10 years.

Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara and Indian commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma concluded the pact in a ceremony at the foreign ministry in Tokyo.

The pact will "promote a strategic partnership between the two countries so that they can establish win-win relations and achieve growth", Maehara said.

Sharma said the pact "provides an overarching framework to promote our economic cooperation, both trade and investment, which will be rewarding for both India and Japan".

"We have noted in our mind that this will usher in a new era of economic engagement, which will bring development, innovation and also prosperity in both of our societies," he said.

The deal would eliminate tariffs on 90 percent of Japanese exports to India, such as auto parts and electric appliances, and 97% of imports from India, including agricultural and fisheries products, until 2021, the Japanese government said.

The two countries have been negotiating since January 2007.

Japan and India are also to continue talks on lifting employment restrictions to allow Indians to work in Japan as nurses and care givers. Japan, which is bracing itself for increasing health care requirements as its population ages, hopes to conclude the talks within two years, the government said.

Does auto parts imply only spares or CBUs ???

As far as I know its over ten years. And thus things will not come into effect immediately as they would have put over a time lag for the policy to come in effect... But hey some good news is better than no good news!
        When in doubt...... Gas it!

But the news says the agreement is signed, and it would be valid upto 2021. So, I don't think it means it would be "commenced fully" from 2021..

Are you sure the implementation of this agreement is slow and not immediate?

hmmmm... for 10 years or over a period of 10 years?
Well, the article quotes "for 10 years" and also "until 2021".... So it means it commences from 2011, or does it?

          -
Personally, I hope that the Ninja 650 be released soon now, as I'm looking for a N650 for myself.. India Kawasaki haven't been much in news lately, except for 1000 sales of N250.

10% added on per year for the next 9 years or something like that.

            if this takes immediate effect...
then the Ninja 650R ABS could actually be priced lower than the Hyosung 650R... Hysosung, double whammy

Guys, could this link be of any use for more information ?

(I have verified it to be a February 2011 Link, and the site seems genuine too)

MOFA: Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between Japan and the Republic of India

Secondly, Motoroids have their own interpretation of the agreement, and they agree that its gradual, over a period of 10 years...

                      Mint:
Japan and India signed a free trade pact on Wednesday under which the hi-tech nation and the South Asian giant pledged to scrap tariffs on 94% of goods within a decade.

India, Japan sign free trade pact - Economy and Politics - livemint.com

This is the live mint link and that is why I was talking that it is going to be gradual. plus the pact according to live mint is waiting approval by the jap senate so few months or a year will have to go by for it come in effect.

                        Yes and NO

Yes because the bikes which are assemebled in India will be benefitted... I think from the next budget hearing....

No because for the CBUs it might take some more time to reduce the duties....

But overall the thing is CBUs or NOT Indian government will have to reduce the duties within the the next 10 years to "0" so it might even get started rigth away....

Now the wait for the budget hearings.....

the final ray of hope is the annual budget where our beloved PM will announce the various duties that are to be levied and on decision makers of companies who might want to start their SBK assembly operations in India....

I dont get one thing if Harley can and Kawasaki planning to do it why are others not even thinking about it???
