Hero Honda raids rivals to build R&D muscle

    Source: Hindustan Times

Bracing itself to life beyond Honda, the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero Honda, has started developing its own research and development (R&D) wing in right earnest by snaring key personnel from rivals Bajaj Auto and TVS. Hero recently appointed long-term Bajaj veteran T M Bala raman at a senior level in its R&D division.

Balaraman had retired from Bajaj 2-3 years back but the company had kept him on the rolls as a part timer in an advisory role. Hero Honda is also trying to get hold of several R&D personnel from Bajaj and TVS across the hierarchy.

The firm does not have a full fledged R&D capabilities like Bajaj and TVS and has been merely involved in increasing localisation of mobikes through component sourcing, making finished products out of the designs prepared by Honda Motor or minor tweaking and refreshing existing products.

"It is not that we have no experience in R&D at all as we have been converting Honda's designs into full fledged motorcycles," said Ravi Sud, chief finance officer, HHML. "We know how to make mobikes, but do not have design capabilities. We will develop that as well."

So far, Bajaj and TVS are not too worried with the new found poaching instincts in their arch rival. "I cant comment on the buzz doing the rounds, but if they want to hire 63 year olds from us, we will provide a list," said a senior Bajaj Auto official.

Hero Honda is also investing towards creating a new brand identity for itself for which it has hired international brand specialist Wolff Olins.

Well, people do shift jobs from one companies to another, right? What's different if the company initiates this, rather than the personnel?

Personally, I think they should think about the future and employ young & creative minds. With some experience though.
What good is a man who's triple my age, for Hero Group's future?

But why only Bajaj and TVS? Why not Yamaha or Suzuki?

well..........shifting jobs is good...........but stealing manpower is bad. there's a difference.

only bajaj and TVS because they are the only ones engaged in good r&d. rest are just getting technologies from there international counterparts.

                    1st is self initiated.
2nd is a headhunting kind of thing...both means the same to the business.
This has been happening, is happening & will continue to happen..

You seem like a loyal worker....

It is indeed going to tough for Hero Group...even if they get human resources from TVS or Bajaj it would not matter...What they need is to understand the current scene of the industry and get good bike rather than sticker upgrades...

So shortly we will have Hero bikes that vibrate and fall apart just like Bajaj bikes. But they will continue to have better stickers.

I hate the Bajaj guys attitude of taking a dig at old people, at present HH needs experience and this 60+ person might bring that to HH, the officer should not forget that they too started from scratch 10 years ago.

do you expect 60+ yr olds to work 12 hrs a day? And be more creative/efficient than a 23 yr old guy??
                            Experience is over-rated.
HH needs to realize old machines can not build new technologies....

Maybe if Hero can loosen their purse generously, they would get fresh and young talent from TVS, Bajaj, Tata Motors (desi companies which do serious R&D) etc.

Anyway, its better late than never for Hero (Munjal Motors..??).
