  • Biker dies on ride protesting helmet law

Onondaga: Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, New York, was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Irony? I wonder why would anyone protest a law which protects so many people. I think one should be wearing a helmet whether it is a law or not. The state where I did most of my riding (in the US) has no helmet law i.e. you can legally ride a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. The slogan of the state is 'Live Free or Die'. However in all our weekend rides everyone wore a helmet and that too a Full face one.

What an irony!! The point of protesting the law eventually turned out to be the strongest point of having that law. Atleast in the end they had realised that the helmet would have saved him..

Ironical and sad too. I hope everybody else in protests gets the idea and start following the rules for everyone's safety!!!

i am not amazed by this news, these kind of fools exists everywhere.
when helmet was made compulsory in pune, a number of fools resisted it saying all kind of problems like weight, not able to see properly, not able to hear properly.etc etc..

Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

That is the idea, u should not be froced to wear anything, you should do it yourself.

Note: I do wear my helmet, willingly ...

i was 16 when this law was passed in pune.got my first bike as activa.as it was compulsary, i bought Renault F1 team vega helmet.but the law was removed immediately and i never wore it untill now.
joined xBHP when i booked the CBR and wearing the same lid everyday now.xBHP really made me understand the importance of lid.it needs getting used to in the beginning but its not that tough, on the other hand i find riding with gloves really different and i think i need a lot of practice for it.

                        cheers.

Only death could make him realise the need for a helmet.

May his soul rest in peace.

There were better ways to learn the lesson, departed soul... Anyways, R. I. P.

Probably, God made an example of him just to clarify that you have responsibilities too, and conveying that God can't run behind each of the 6 billion people, saving them all the time.

But we, most of the Indian people won't wear it still until some accident happens to and ruins their family.

God can make everyone wear helmets, by such examples, eliminating one member from each family, and then by heck, people will wear it!!!
But then god will be ashamed on himself, creating such a beautiful world and then destroying it that badly...

Sorry if this is a bit too much philosophical... Typical Piscean nature of mine!
