Rajat Bhanti's topic approved and merged here.

This posted link is a 2012 news that most of us probably missed. So, it is happening after all. Let's hope we will be able to ride to Thailand soon...

Irrespective of tentative dates, let's hope we get to ride on this. This can actually turn out to be the Autobahn of the east. Imagine speeds of 150 km/h, six lane (maybe more). Ahhhh!!

By 2016, I'd be out of college or probably dead, I'm planning to invest in stock market from now, so by 2016 I should have some money saved up to roar down the new highway, heading straight towards Thighland for some fun at Bangcock.
          I am back!

Re: India to Thailand: BY ROAD!!!!

Its amazing how land locked we can feel in such a big country, probably because of hostile neighboring conditions... I'm literally dying to get on a long inter-country ride... Praying for a day when borders are like EU. But one thing is that I'll surely be the one putting my name up for any such ride, even if i'm bloody 70 yrs old.

Hey, maybe we ought to come up with a peace initiative for a ride and get global sponsors to fund a 'Trans Asia' for riders who initiate the idea in xBHP India . Again... dreamin. Its the stuff of dreams I tell you - from the beaches of India to the beaches of Thailand through tropical rainforests, rivers and islets... sweet lord... please aid me my dream... Drool.

I am sure its going to be a winner for tourers. But what I think they should not make the international license compulsory (forgetting the name of that license), instead of that there should be bilateral agreement between the two countries for the usage of their own nation's DL. This can attract more and more numbers of riders. And can boost the tourism based revenue. :P

What I know is that if you want to ride or drive any vehicle from one country to another country, you will be required a DL which will be primary document to confirm that you can ride or drive. It will be next important document to passport. I am right not able to recall that what is the name of the license which is required. Will post the details asap when I will came to know about it.

Re: India to Thailand: BY ROAD!!!!

I have recently came to know about the some useful information regarding the type of D/L required by our neighbouring countries (such as Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh).

                        1. We need a D/L which is a IDP (International Driving Permit). IDP is like a passport, where our details are being provided.
                        2. IDP is valid for maximum for 1 year and can only be applied before 3 months from the date of journey.
                        3. We need a D/L which is a chipset based, not a paper based D/L. if we are riding to Nepal.
                        4. In India IDP is related to 1949 Geneva Convention on Traffic.
                        5. IDP are issued as per the norms of different countries. (which you can see on the link given below)
                        6. On the following link, if you see the countries name followed by any alphabets in brackets, then check for Alphabets terms and conditions for the countries. And if there are no alphabets after the Countries name, then we don't need any IDP.

It seems IDP requires same address on both the passport as well as DL

it is different for different countries. Countries like Canada and US do not have this restriction where the address should be same on both the passport as well as the DL.

Re: India to Thailand: BY ROAD!!!!

i'm sure there will be clear official instructions once this entire route is completed in 2015.

i rode with only my indian driving license (paper book) when i was in malaysia last year.
rode all three days from KL City to the Sepang circuit and didn't have any issues with traffic cops.

of course i wasn't stopped by the cops while i was riding my bike
but i did have to slow down for a "check post" but they just looked at the tax/rego information on the windscreen sticker.

from what i was told is that as long as the license that you have is in english, you won't have any issues.
the same goes for australia too. tried and tested.
                              .
