  • Biker Shot Dead in Bangalore!

Was shocked to see this in the front page of our local newspaper first thing in the morning:

Student shot dead in Bangalore for intruding into brigadier's house (Second Lead)
    Bangalore | December 28, 2008 10:35:05 PM IST

Army guards shot dead Mohammed Mukkharam, a 20-year-old student who was drag racing, early Sunday for intruding into the house of a brigadier and trying to escape when asked to surrender, a senior police official said.

"The youth was shot by the sentry in the compound of Brigadier P.S. Ravindranath's house on the old airport road around 2 a.m. when he tried to jump the boundary wall instead of surrendering," Ulsoor area police inspector M.K. Thammaiah told IANS.

Brigadier Ravindranath is the commander of the army's Karnataka and Kerala sub-area.

The brigadier was present in the Flagstaff House with his family members when the incident happened, a defence spokesperson confirmed.

A bleeding Mukkharam was carried in a car to the St. Phelomena hospital in the early hours by two of his friends but he succumbed to the bullet injuries in stomach and abdomen.

"Mukkharam was declared dead by the hospital doctors, who refused to admit or attend to him as he had bullets in the body and it was a police case," one of his friends told reporters.

The victim intruded into the brigadier's bungalow in the high-security defence area when the mobile police squad on the night beat chased him for speeding on a motorbike in a drag race with friends.

"The traffic police at the end of the M.G. Road tried to stop Mukkharam's bike by placing barricades across the road. Sensing trouble, Mukkharam managed to ride through the gap at the divider and turned towards the old airport road. When the mobile squad chased him, his bike skidded. In panic, he intruded into the brigadier's house by scaling the compound wall," Thammaiah said, quoting the sentries who were on duty.

By the time the police alerted the army sentry to trace the intruder in the sprawling area, Mukkharam managed to climb onto the rooftop of the single-storey house and lay there flat after hiding in the bushes and behind trees for a while.

"The sentry located the victim lying flat on the terrace and telling his friends on mobile in 'colloquial Urdu' to rescue him from there. When the guards asked him to get down and surrender, he jumped from the roof-top and began running."

"The sentry first tried to stop him by firing in the air three times and shot him while jumping over the wall, mistaking him to be a terrorist," said Thammaiah, who is investigating the case.

The police registered a case of trespass into the restricted area and an attempt to escape under sections 448 and 103 of the Indian Penal Code against Mukkharam on a complaint by the military police.

Mukkharam was a B.Com. student in a city college. His body was handed over to parents after the post-mortem examination at a government hospital.

Mukkharam was the only son of Mohammed Mustaq, a bus driver with a private transport operator in the city.

The police are on the lookout for Mukkharam's friend who was riding pillion on the race bike.

City police commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters that the victim tried to turn around and speed away when the beat constables asked him to stop.

"Speed racing or drag racing is dangerous to not only others, but also for those indulging in it. Public roads are not meant for this kind of adventure," Bidari said.

City deputy commissioner of police (east) B.K. Singh said the police were trying to curb adventurous youth from indulging in motorbike drag race on some thoroughfares, as it was a menace to other road users and dangerous to their life and limb.

"We have been booking traffic violation cases against such offenders to put an end to this kind of dare-devilry. Police squads on night beat have intensified patrolling since the Mumbai terror attacks last month to check any unusual movements on city roads," Singh added.

I saw this news yesterday ... News is a bit unclear to me. He should have surrendered - Why didn't he do it? Was he really guilty?

and also, these Newspapers - They make anyone a "Biker" ... WTF?

"Mukkharam was declared dead by the hospital doctors, who refused to admit or attend to him as he had bullets in the body and it was a police case," one of his friends told reporters.
I think Supreme Court had issued a "Right to Emergency Care" to everyone ... Damn! Rules are great but who implements them!??

Any comments guys on this Right to emergency care, have I got it correctly?

@Samarth 619 - i heard of something like that too...regardless he should have been attended to....

many imports without proper papers are on the roads these days...i think the deceased was on one of them and fearing a huge fine he might of decided to run...but its all pointless now a person has lost his life for no reason...a really sad incident.

@Richard: i have read in a paper TOI or Pune Mirror (don't remember exactly which one) that he was riding on a Yamaha RX 100/135. I feel that he was terrified since cops were chasing him at that hour and in desperation he took the steps which he shouldn't have.

                    This is really sad.

There are many cases like this not regrading getting shot but being beaten by cops is a common thing on ring road and command hospital road where this incident took place. Few months back 34 bikers were caught racing on the ring road. one was beaten up unfortunately a mechanic from my area. This is never ending . Guys still drag on airport road even with cops around. when i use to stay near Domlur ( old airport road ) super bikes and cars use to race from leela place signal to MG road. due to these holigans going out at night is become risky . now again cops will be patroling airport road last time there was a speed trap put up by cops near command hospital dude to these kind of incidents will have to watch out every road .

Guys make sure u check out the coverage on Aaj Tak. They will surely dramatise it so much that it'll become unintentionally funny. Tragic I know, but what to do .. Aaj Tak coverage is so ameturish !

I am pretty sure he wasn't on a superbike, as they would have sure made it a point to point that out that a 'ameer baap ka bigdaa beta' was wheeling a superbike. Also I dont think a superbike at full go can be chased down police vehicles !!

AFAIK he was chased from Trinity circle at one end of the MG Road and Bangalore pple would know that the Army area is perhaps a couple of kms from there. A SBK whould have surely left the police vehicle in the dust !!

Sad incident. Maybe he was an enthusiastic biker, maybe he was really decent fellow, but one day of rash behaviour cost him his life !!!

He should have surrendered. But now its too late !!

May God rest his soul in peace !! And may God give strenght to his family/friends.

A very unfortunate incident it was the bikers fault for not listening to the law enforcement agencies, but I fail o understand how can a person be drag racing when he is only on 1 bike with a pillion.

No matter who are you it is perfectly clear that you cannot just tresspass and climb on people's houses. Police asked him to surrender. He didn't. Shot dead. Police took the obvious action.

What if he was a terrorist and police didn't shoot him down? Then we would be criticising the police for not shooting down the terrorist.

It seems he was talking to his friends in Urdu and that prompted the security forces to assume that he might be a terrorist and they shot him. Imagine such predefined notions, that have set in every persons mind. Be it security forces or civilians !! Unfortunate and sad reflection of the times we live in !!

                            Hope this situation gets better.
