I think you know that's not the real reason. Please read some posts above again and try to understand. (btw, D200 owners will be a large chunk of D390 buyers anyway.)

The issue here is that I want my STREET bike to have good pull in low rpms.
If I want a relaxed power in low rpms then I'd be looking to buy some other kind of bike, not a street naked bike. I don't care about wheelies, I just want that power to be available there as well, not just at the top.
    Simple as that.

D200 owners are just spoiled with a good pull in low revs and have expected even better pull in D390. That's the only thing we're disappointed in...
Nobody's disappointed about the power above 5k rpm, that's perfect.

Not really. Because RC390 will be a faired sportbike. So even it is priced not too far above from Duke 390, guys will still probably have a clear preference between a faired version of a bike or a naked version (which apparently is not the case with Duke 200 and 390).

Completely agree. D390 is a good bike and so is D200. I have ridden both, and although D200 is more "pushy" and D390 feels laid back, both are great bikes and equally easy to ride in and around city. The clutch of D390 felt a bit stiff at first, but, considering that the bike was new, the clutch would loosen up after a while. This happens with all the new bikes having cable clutches.

low torque in lower revs wont be that much of an issue once we get used to the 390's character.just a simple matter of keeping it in the rev range which luckily starts from mid unlike say a ninja or r15(both less so now but still).does anyone know what the price of the oem bigger windshield is?considering it is already out with the duke 125,200 series outside.

Slot into first and the first gear was selected with an assuring “thud”. D390 is geared taller and that along with an unimpressive low end will require the rider to slip the clutch to get going from a stand still. Till about 5000 rpm, its unimpressive for a machine that produces a peak power of 43hp and 35 nm of peak torque. By this time it was apparent that most of the power of the D390 is at the higher revs. If you short shift at around 4-5k rpm you will feel the vibey nature of a big single when under load"

KTM is creating a full fleet/portfolio of bikes. Each one will be catering to different demands. To me if you are primarily going to ride within the city then D200 is what you should ride but on the other hand if you are mostly riding for pleasure on weekends then D390 is the one you should pick. This has actually become very clear with all the user and press reviews so far.

It just keeps on pulling and never feels like its working hard. On nice twisty roads and i am sure it will give any 600 a run for its money.

You can always install a custom rear sprocket. How about a 52teeth sprocket? Thats gonna make it wheelie everywhere .

But what Doga said is what most of us felt. He is bang on with his analysis. The aggressive nature of the Duke's is tapered down in D390, but that is due to the fact that it will also perform duty as a faired sports bike, and in a faired sports bike, that is how you expect power to be delivered. On a naked, you do expect as much aggressiveness as possible.

But on the hindsight had KTM made D390 as much aggressive as D200, it would have been tough to handle with power wheelies popping up every now and then.

Are the deliveries starting or is it a one off case?

The 200 gearing is extremely short and it originally sported a 43 T sprocket at the rear, which was later changed to 42. This translated to awesome pickup from standstill and a sense of victory on most traffic lights .
The 390 has taller gears, picks up well from standstill but relatively poorly if one considers the fact that it's the same chassis as the 200 with twice the power. "Relatively" is the operating word here. One should think what would have happened if the KTM guys would have opted for the same maniac character of the 200. The jolt(launching from zero in first gear) one gets on the 200 would have doubled on the 390 then, resulting in probably the rider loosing grip of the handlebars.
Then it struck me. In light of the upcoming RC 390, I think, the same gearbox of the 390 would be used with only minor tweaks in mapping for increasing the top speed probably.
Makes sense, you essentially manufacture the same bike with a fairing and new handlebars(clip ons) with even the gearbox remaining the same.
I don't really find another reason for the relatively laid back character of the 390, given the fact that dukes are known for keeping the rider busy. If there was not a possibility of using the same setup for the RC 390, the designers would have opted for the Duke series USP, namely maximum fun possible in lower and mid range and not much regard for the higher rpms and top end. Make no mistake, the engines are all hig revving, but they don't wait for the higher revs to make the rider grin.
