I'm also saying the same thing that it feels faster than the three bikes mentioned. Back to back riding will make you feel that the other bikes are slow to move from standstillOriginally posted by chinmayakar View Post

Duke 390 has amazing power. When you try a drag with D200, D390 will smoke it away. In traffic you can hardly find where the D390 is. It zoooooooms (you will be like, I just saw it going next to me, where it is now) It has amazing power from 1st gear. Its only how you use it. When I ripped the 390 properly, I felt like I am loosing the grip from the accelerator and leaning backwards. Its pickup is amazing. I took a proper test drive I am pretty sure that it has amazing pickup. From standstill in second gear it was like 1st gear in CBR 250.Last edited by praveen8u; 07-17-2013, 05:26 PM. I think I was mentioning about Power delivery. Yes, D390 is way fast than the bikes mentioned above....
I said D390 feels like a CBR250 or a Ninja 300 rather than a grown up D200 relaxed and composed instead of aggressive and impatient.
Ok, to make it clear a couple of guys after having tested D390 and after having owned a D200, P230 and other bikes, were expecting D390 to be same like D200 but lot more power and torque to play with. (when i say same I mean the way it hits the red line, the way it makes power, the aggression)Last edited by chinmayakar; 07-17-2013, 05:17 PM.

re: KTM Duke 390 Launched in India at Rs 1.8 Lakhs: xBhp News
Still no test ride available where I am so I have to ask here...Originally posted by praveen8u View PostDuke 200: For example you twisted the throttle to overtake the bus at 1st sec(assuming total duration of the overtake is 3 sec), you get instant pickup and cross the bus at 3rd second. Whereas in D390 You initiate the throttle at 1st second and her you will get pickup in the 2nd second and the pickup is so massive that you cross the bus in 2.5 sec. If you initiate the overtake by shifting the gear down you will be cross the bus in 1.5 sec to 2 sec. It all depends on how you use it. D390 pickup is amazing but the initial acceleration does not feel like D200 to be honest but it actually goes faster than D200. Take a test drive and I am sure that you are going to love it. I see so many guys here compare D390 to D200 which I feel is not right. Both characters are different even though it looks similar. This would be a best upgrade for Yamaha R15, CBR 150, CBR 250 and P220 owners. I did not mention D200 bcos its character is different and I am pretty sure that D200 owners would not be happy with D390. Before doing a test ride of D390 forget your D200 to understand the bike in a better way.
I'm just basically trying to figure out the character of the bike. I don't necessarily have to stay with D200's character, I can get used to little more relaxed style, but I personally prefer a strong pick up much more than high speed.
That's exactly why I asked that question. I had bikes with delayed acceleration and when I want to have a quick overtake it starts accelerating only when I already need to start SLOWING down because of another vehicle in front. Which isn't handy for such blitz overtakings. That's why I used the word "catapult", where most of the acceleration is at the very start, and you need to start slowing down literally before the overtake is finished.Originally posted by sparky View PostThe D200 will accelerate faster than the D390 in the first second at least because the kinetic inertia of D200 will be less than a D390. But after the first second D390 will catch up and unless you control well you will overshoot your intended overtake length. I don't know why people don't understand that there is bound to be some difference in riding, c'mon guys one is almost double the capacity of the other.
But I suppose D390 will pull instantly too if in power band above 5k rpm. I guess, at least!
Yes, exactly.Originally posted by chinmayakar View PostYou are talking about throttle response, I guess. Yes you are right. But, D390 is a lot relaxed, and hence even if it does 80, you feel like you are still doing 60. Hence, it will take time to adjust to that. While on a D200, it feels like it is doing 80, when it is actually on 80.
Hence you might feel like that.
From all I've read and some videos I've seen I'm getting an impression that D390 isn't that slow to pull, but it just FEELS like it has slower acceleration because it doesn't make much exhaust sound and fuss about it.
For example, ride in a Mercedes at 200 kmh on a highway, and it won't feel much different than Indica at 80 kmh.
Or ride a small 50cc TVS at 50 kmh and you'll feel you're going blazing fast. It's all relative.
I think test rides of all bikes should be taken with good earplugs to get an accurate impression. That's why I feel 2 strokes and Bullets are little over rated (2 stroke lovers, don't bash me for that, it's just my opinion and experience), just because they make much more sound about their acceleration, but if you look at the actual speed they don't go nearly as fast as it feels. D200 is little bit like this as well, it's quite loud when it pulls.
i have a feeling D390 just does it in quieter and easier way, so it just FEELS and SOUNDS like it's lacking a bit, but it doesn't. Or at least not as much as it might feel.
Yes, I'm well aware of the torque facts.Originally posted by riazmomin View PostWhen it comes to pickup or overtaking, we need to talk about Torque rather than BHP's which is 35nm Vs 19nm. It is almost double the torque that is made by D200 with just 15kg heavier. So you can make your calculations.
I feel it is psychological feeling that D390 is slower than D200. Being a bigger engine you will not feel that rush, but it is actually going faster before you realize it. Added to its taller gearing it will be great bike to use in cities and will be an apt tourer if you carefully plan your fuel stops.
Whatever the delay is happening for the reviews or delivery of the bikes, at the end it is good for the customers.
And I'm also aware you can tune the same engine differently to deliver the power in different ways, faster or slower, less or more, basically making the facts much more relative.
But yes, I agree, there's a lot of psychological feeling here in play because D390 delivers its power in a more relaxed way.

re: KTM Duke 390 Launched in India at Rs 1.8 Lakhs: xBhp News
Went to check the 390(again) to the showroom today, and observed the bike closely (side by side) to the 200. The guy at the store said, he had driven it for a short distance and he felt like a jet with all after burners on shot of an elastic band holding it. He ways around 60 kg, that was enough to keep me
The seats on the 390 are definitely softer than on 200 and the same goes for the suspension. I sat on the both parked next to each other(jumped a bit) and could feel the softer suspension and seat immediately. What concerns me is the cost of the Metzlers upward of 21K which they said MRF's costing 8K are as good for almost all purposes.
So in short I would be able to safely overtake almost 99.50% of the vehicles on road whenever I want to.

flyingabhi - I live at Dahisar and i went to Navi Mumbai for the reveal and booking. Sales and After sales are good based on what i have heard from numerous xBhpians. Also met their service manager during the reveal and seemed to be a good bloke and well versed with KTM's based on service experience of Existing 200 owners . I booked from Vashi and have been looked after well. Speak to Virendra Negi - Showroom Manager.
Awaiting Elixir.

re: KTM Duke 390 Launched in India at Rs 1.8 Lakhs: xBhp News
I think he is not asking that. He is talking about throttle response. Yes, the numbers are mighty impressive, and yes it is also very fast, but he wants to know how that power and torque is delivered.
I guess we are just going round and round. At the end of the day D390 is lot more powerful than D200, but power delivery is more like than CBR 250R, Ninja 300 rather than the D200.
Now, will Bajaj let the reviews flow and let those D390's run amock. The wait is just too long. If it is due to strike, then I think theres no definite timeline until Bajaj starts KTM production elsewhere.
I think all the Auto companies shud have a backup facility like in IT you have Business Continuity Plan and forming of Union should be banned.
IT is doing great without Union and stuff.

Of course, I'm aware were talking about 43 hp vs 25 hp, so this is more of a question about the character of the bike, but also a very practical one.
I don't want to twist a throttle and then it takes a sec or two before the bike accelerates strongly because that's almost when I'll want to slow down. I need a sudden acceleration exactly when I need it, not a second later. It's about instant acceleration, about the timing.
Basically - are those 43 horses little lazy (even if it's just 1 sec) or are they agile and respond instantly?

I have a question about that pull that's apparently little bit lacking:
Today I had a 250 km ride up and down to KTM showroom to do a service on my D200 and see the D390 (sadly no test rides yet), and I really enjoyed the spirited ride.
One of the things I enjoyed during the ride on my D200 and was wondering how it would be on D390 was those quick 3 sec overtakings. Basically I just twist a throttle, "catapult" myself, pass a car/bus/truck quickly and then slow down immediately because of more traffic ahead.
This usually needs a bigger bike, but D200 does it pretty well for such a small engine. You twist the throttle and it responds instantly with strong pull, so such quick overtakings are possible with it.
The question is - would D390 be able to instantly strongly accelerate the moment I twist the throttle or would it have a little delayed acceleration?

My dear, I'll just say this...
You are unnecessarily digging too deep in the numbers. You don't have to. No matter what the character is, the 390 will still be hugely satisfying for anyone upgrading from a lower capacity motorcycle including the d200 (generally speaking). Yes I said it there. You need to relax.
Overtaking on 390 will be easier than on 200 if that is all you want to know.
