shelton_jh, nice review!
I see you say you'd keep your RTR for daily use if you buy D390.

Can you comment little more on usability of D390 in regular daily use and city ride?
The thing is that I don't want to have a second small bike for daily use and have D390 more for weekend or fun rides. If I'd have two bikes then I'd want a bigger 600+ cc bike for that purpose.

I have D200 and thought D390 will be still small and convenient enough to be a bike for daily use. If it is I'll buy it. But if it isn't then I won't go for it.

This was exactly my condition too when I did my booking, no penalty for cancellation. 4K is not a small amount by any means to throw away at someone for just a cancelled booking when there will be hordes waiting in line to grab it.

BTW, The dealer said the TD bike is going to the RTO today for registration and will be available from Monday next for test rides

Hopefully to get a long awaited test ride on Monday. It is high time the dealer understands that test ride is part of the decision to cough up 2L+ and he better give me a decent test ride on a decently maintained bike( read starting problems ). BTW, I saw this review video:

KTM Duke 390 Facts and Comparison (Ninja 300 and CBR500R) - YouTube

The same quality concerns posted by some on the forum do tend to slip in from the reviewer too.
At 6:16 I see an Acro exhaust attached which will be a boon for attention grabbers.
Is the unlimited kms 2 years warranty also offered to the Indian customers? I hope so

Having owned a Pulsar 150 from 10 years and a no fuss experience, I hope to get something better from this bike.

Here you go d390 is very good for city ride. We can go easily on 30kmph in the fifth gear without any lugging. In sixth you can go at 45kmph without lugging. It's easy to ride in the city. My duke200 goes at 30kmph in sixth gear without lugging. So there may be a slight difference only. Also the mileage will be very slightly less than d200 if we ride it smoothly.i paid full amount for the d390. Waiting for the delivery. May be around August second week. These small niggles will be rectified by ktm. Let's hope. Heat is not a problem although it's a 375cc machine. We have to bear this.
Cheers guys.

I had a rather different experience, the 5th and 6th gear are absolutely not usable for city rides, that is below 60-70kmph forget slotting to the 5th otherwise the bikes act as if lugging, gets really jerky. You would have to adjust yourself to riding in the first four gears within city limits which won't be much of an issue as the gears are very tall and at no point you would feel that the bike needs an upshift (I am talking about city speeds)

Riding within city would be better on the duke 200 but that does not mean its not possible on 390, one would get used to it.

While I took it for a long td, the meter was showing 24kmpl. This was under varying conditions. I checked everything from acceleration to rollons or in gear acceleration, city behaviour and everything else to understand the bike. So if you ride as one should within the city 28-30kmpl should be manageable.

5th and 6th gears are way too tall for city ride. I never use 5th and 6th in city rides even on my D200, so I doubt I'd be using even 4th on D390 (which, if I recall reading somewhere tops at around 130 kmh). I like to stay closer to power band.

I'm ready to switch and ride in 1 gear lower and get used to it, that's not a problem.
But how's the city ride itself, handling and moving in heavier traffic, especially in regard to those taller gears?

I know I "could" manage city rides even on a 600+ cc bike, but it's easier to move around on a 150 cc bike... And D390 is still as light as a 150 cc bike, so that's why a question about its rideability in city...

The bike had just come to the showroom 2 days back, so it took a bit of coaxing to get the test ride which he was promising to start from Monday on-wards. Anyway now that I have had my few minutes with the bike I thought I will share what I felt about it:

* Me being 5'9" I felt it requires a little more to throw your leg over the bike compared to the RTR 180. Once you have settled in, it feels you've been "slotted" onto the saddle and somehow the foot peg being a little aft than usual makes me feel more comfortable (This might be a problem for long rides but again it depends on how you adapt to it for long rides)

* Decent build quality, nothing great about it though. Cables loosely hanging with no proper routing and hangers in place is not what you expect from a 2L bike but all these are minor things which can be overlooked

* Before starting the bike the showroom guy was saying about some setting issues with the bike and was explaining what to do if it stalls and all. Then came the good and the bad news; first the good: he said he wont accompany me. Second the bad: all that I got to ride was a small stretch (would have been 700 to 800 meters in total). Nevertheless soon after the short boring session I had a slight smile on my face because it was time to roll on! Had to take the bike off the pavement on to the road and surely I dint want to consume any of the already very short distance by getting "used" to the bike. Soon after both tires hit the tarmac wrrrrrooooommmmm................. The bike gave me a wide grin with a bit of fear as she hit 80kmph in no time and still climbing rapidly that I had to slow her down so that I dint miss the U-turn which I was supposed to take. Once the U turn taken I knew straight away it was time to test the first gear and she dint disappoint me in any way, she gave me just what I had expected from her, went past 50kmph in no time with no real effort, no vibrations and still happily climbing ! Have felt this only on the RD 350HT till now.

* Coming to the next few gears I neither had the time nor the distance to test it properly but felt the bike begging to be pulled nicely on each gear well before you slot on to the next gear. The gears are little clunkier than the D200. It's got really tall gear ratios which surely would not make it as good as the 200 in the city (here i'm talking in terms of ease of riding the bike in traffic). Immediately felt that my RTR is going to stay for my daily commute even If I buy this bike. Again this is a matter of learning how to deal with it and it should only take few days for a seasoned rider to adapt to this kind of gear ratio with loads of usable power. I truly feel once you get used to the gearing, montruous torque combined with plenty of cc and loads of power you can be really quick in hitting speeds above 100 and the D200 is no where near to this monster in terms of pick up, pulling power and torque. If the available torque combined with the cc advantage is used properly I don't see this being a slow couch off the blocks! Again remembered both the LT and HT versions of the RDs while trying to compare both the D200 and the D390 in my mind where according to me the HT always remained the Big daddy!

* Bike feels more planted, agile/manoeuvrable and grippy than the 200 and you all know these are due to obvious reasons!

* Coming to the brakes, had to brake hard twice during my short stint and it behaved really well (It felt great compared to my slippin'/slidin' characteristics of my RTR) but not as good as the Ninja though

* I stop the bike, get down, just to feel the engine revving stooped down and was welcomed by a gush of hot air from the engine, Yes it had really heated up for such a short sprint. I just feel that this will reduce as carbon gets deposited on the engine but still it is going to be a "Hot" bike to handle specially in the city (One more reason why my RTR stays)

To summarize this is the first bike which has given me the "real" thrill (If you know what I mean :P) after my RD 350HT days that too with tall gear ratios which is something that I've been looking for in my next bike so that I can tour all day long without any hint of strain from the engine (which is a real worry on my RTR)

Given the fact that lot of accessories like the windshield and saddle bags are to come soon I feel this would make an awesome tourer if used properly and of course at the same time it can be used for some real fun as well .

Keeping my booking amount on hold for a few days since the engine stalling and heating up issues are something which has to be clarified by either Bajaj or the reviews which are yet to come before I put my full trust on this product. Nevertheless this has got all it takes for me to happily munch miles without any problem and at the same time give me the 'Big grin' every time I want to !!!

As for the deliveries he was saying the ones who booked first will get the bikes in the first week of Aug and If I book it now I will be getting it sometime around mid - september. He said the strike was really an issue but once the regular production starts there is going to be no more delays.
Great review brother
Me also waiting for all the reviews to be out & First ride reports from fellow XBHPians.
BAJAJ-KTM ought to clear the air about any niggling issues [though i can forgive them once they commission the first lot of deliveries ]

Okay had a test ride today on ORR Bangalore, and here are a results: Being a Pulsar 150 rider for 10 years or so.

1) The bike by no means can be compared to a 200 Duke or any smaller capacity bike, it is a completely different bike other than the size and chassis.
2) The bike is nimble, unlike my pulsar 150 the rotation/twisting of accelerator is directly proportional to the acceleration you get. A rev friendly engine.

Small comparison:
Duke 390 - My Pulsar 150
1 - 2nd Gear = 1st to 3 gear.
2nd - 3rd gear = 4 - 5th gear.

So city riders can ride the bike only in 3 gears or forget even the 3rd in office hours.
The bike was fast and I mean really fast which means before twisting accel. in any gear be sure there is no one in the next 100 - 200 mts of your sight else . With that power comes the sense of responsibility unless one is out on a kill. So no kidding with this bike. One point which I like to state is the sitting position is with the body weight almost 100% on the seat( and not on handle bars like the Ninja's/CBR ) and that means you have to hold the handle bars really tight, else while hard accel or braking you can easily fly off.
The bike stopped in middle( my bad of not figuring the right gear ) and I was not able to re-start the bike in-gear like Pulsar. Comments please!.
The test ride bike had issues with respect to fuel flow and followed by starting problems, the reason explained was this bike had been parked for almost a month and only taken out today for first test ride. No issue for me as the test ride was butter smooth, the bike just peals off the roads like hot knife slicing butter.
The heat was not an issue(for me) in the Bangalore weather and it was the heat + the burning paint kind of smell that makes me nervous. But that can be attributed to the NEW nature of the test bike.

In all really impressed with the Value For Money and will be a hell of a fun to ride on roads.
So waiting continues..

Just now had another(4th) test drive of d390. Now also I tried 30kmph in fifth gear without lugging but we cannot ride continuously in the fifth. But it is almost comfortable for city riding. You are right d200 is better for city but then we can't get extra 175cc. But d390 it's really mesmerising. Got attracted.

Thank you for the appreciation. Dude I see that you are from Tiruvannamallai, so you really don't have to bother about having the D200 with you. In a place like your's you dont have to worry about this "City" issue which everyone are talking about. If I had been in Coimbatore (my hometown) RTR would have gone the very next day after I buy the KTM and would be using the KTM even for going to near by shops. This is because I see a vast difference between cities like Mumbai and cities/towns like our's one is the traffic and the other is roads. The roads in TN (except chennai) are much better and traffic is so easy that you will be able to use bikes with tall gear ratios effectively, here in Mumbai I don't see it is going to be an easy task. Of course in due course I would be able to handle this issue but still I would feel short gear ratios are any day better for cities like Mumbai. That's why my RTR is going to stay but you don't have to worry about it being in TRVML! About the rideability of the bike in regard to tall gear ratios again it is how well you adapt to it and it is possible to learn the trick, it is just that it is easier on a short geared vehicle. Don't ever doubt the flickability of the bike cause it is just too good, better than the D200 IMO. With super duper sticky tires and much more planted feel the bike inspires confidence.About the lugging I felt the bike lug at lesser speeds on the 5th gear, till 4th gear it felt good but as soon as I put it on 5th it started lugging so dint even want to try the 6th. For that matter even in 4th I dint feel comfortable with less speeds. So again my point is the last 2 gears are strictly going to be for the highways. Ride down to chennai and take a test ride, if you aren't getting it there then a trip to coimbatore which would be around 300kms from your place. Then it would be easy for you to take a call. All the best!

I would like to put my 2 paisa regarding the gearing and the average low end!

My current ride is the R15 v1. On this bike, the power band starts at around 7k and ends at 10k. If the rpm is anything below 4k, the only gear to use is the 1st or at most the 2nd. And, the 6th gear should only be brought into play above 80kmph. The bike can be somehow put into 6th at around 65kmph too, but be ready to watch the speedo roll backward at any hint of an incline/headwind.

Now, I have been using this bike for a 30+30km commute in peak Bangalore traffic for the last 3 years. Do I miss a stronger mid end? At times, yes! But, with time, I have learnt how to extract the power from the engine when needed. It has become second nature now. Want to ride at a normal pace, keep the rpm above 6k. Want a spirited ride, keep her above 8k rpm. With some practice, it becomes really that simple! Heck, in peak traffic, the seating position is more of a bother for me than the weak low/mid end!

On the Duke, I see the average low end as an advantage. It makes the bike that much more friendlier and easy to ride - no need to watch out for that sudden wheelie or for that patch of sand on the road that could make the rear end lose grip under acceleration. And, when you plan to use the bike as a daily commuter, it makes much more sense to consider these points. When you feel the urge to go fast, just rev her up - at least, the R15 riders are certainly not shy to rev up a bike. Heck my bike revs into 9-10k rpm a couple of times everyday. It is just second nature now to up shift just before hitting the rev limiter. And the way the bike sounds post 7k rpm is a bonus.

So, for those coming from a bike with good low and mid end, like the D200, P220 etc, I believe it is just a matter of getting used to the altered power delivery. For those like me, coming from a bike like R15, the stronger mid end (compared to my present ride) should be an outright delight! And for those coming from a Bull, it would be a learning curve indeed!

My only worry about this bike is the heat from the radiator, even though I am no stranger to blast of hot air on my current bike.

Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!
