Re: Flipkart funded Ather S340 e-scooter production ready! Launch at Bangalore in July.

Another mail from them...

By now, you would be well aware of all the important events coming up in the following few months. While the update by Tarun last week would have given an overall sense of timelines which we are working towards, this newsletter will tell you all that's happening behind the scenes to meet those timelines.

Take a quick look at what we’ve been up to, leading up to the launch:

Homologation and Validation of S340
We’ve been building prototype after prototype. But, that’s not enough. The big leap is when you know that the product will perform in every condition, imaginable and unimaginable. And we are doing all it takes to make sure that happens. We have been doing homologation on the S340 for quite some time now. Here are a few of the tests that the vehicle has successfully cleared.

1. EMI/EMC homologation compliance - A safety measure to bar any kind of external electromagnetic interferences messing with the electronics on the vehicle.
2. Environmental tests - Tested under severe conditions to withstand dust, extreme temperatures, rain, waterlogging, etc.
3. Battery Homologation - Short circuit, vibrations, and nail penetration test.
4. Chassis durability test using Cam Drum Testing Machine.
5. Accelerated wear test on all electronic components in high ambient temperature conditions.
6. Vibration tests using specialized rigs to mimic road conditions.

Building the customer service and production team
After building a strong team of engineers over the past few years, our focus in the last few months has been on building a sound customer service team - a team that will consist of relationship managers as well as product specialists, who will be your first touch points while interacting with us. The highest priority of our customer service team will be to ensure that you have a great experience with the purchase and ownership of the S340.

All the prototypes until now, were handcrafted by a team of engineers at our R&D center. This obviously is not enough, to mass produce we would certainly need a far bigger set-up. Over the last few months, we have also assembled a skilled production team who have undergone extensive training to efficiently roll-out vehicles from our Whitefield factory.

Giving our partners a taste of the S340
The S340 would have been impossible to build without a robust ecosystem of our 100+ suppliers. As we get into production, we thought it would be great to invite them and give a preview of what they have been helping us build over the last couple of years.

An open house session was hosted exclusively for our component partners last month to show them the vehicle in all its glory. The suppliers got to interact with our engineering teams, share their feedback and have a broader look at the ecosystem we are building alongside the S340. They were happy to test ride the vehicle and we were happy to hear all they had to say about it.

What’s up with Open Labs?
We set-up Open Labs a few months back to get feedback on the product and customer touchpoints. Since then, we have hosted eight open labs sessions and dozens of one-on-one interviews with a lot of you folks from Bengaluru.

A whole bunch of feedback sessions were conducted on the upcoming website, experience center, and the charging infrastructure. Plenty of relevant feedback was gathered. Based on that, things as small as a word placement in the upcoming website, to design of the entire charging pod have been reworked.

Deploying MESSI in the field with customers

Last we wrote to you about MESSI was in August 2017. MESSI has been super helpful for us to gather data in the field, beyond what we could’ve captured using S340 prototypes alone. Initially, MESSI was installed on employees’ vehicles and could collect 7 data points that included information on the throttle, RPM, brake, horn, acceleration, orientation, and location.

MESSI has been updated to MESSI 2.0, which now means that it is capable of collecting additional data - on temperature, weather conditions, riding with a pillion, and brake pressure. Also, a GSM connection allows real-time data monitoring for a quick and accurate analysis. We’ve got several enthusiastic volunteers on board, who are now helping us collect information through their scooters.

MESSI now reaches Chennai too, to help us understand the weather and road conditions there better. It will enable us to prep up to get the basics right, build the foundation, and plan for the next launch city.

This is all for now. As we go to market, there will be more to share in the coming days and we promise to keep you updated first. Lots of great news on the way!
Bikers,
I'm planning to get one from Bangalore to my city, Ajmer... I'll let it remain in Banglore for few days with a contact of mine, if the vehicle receives an upgrade/ recall or so...
Then, I'll get it here via Railway.

I have a plan... a big plan, a plan beyond just riding it around. Will let you know if things mature up...

Another Update: Ather Grid Launched in Bengaluru.

Charging infrastructure first or electric vehicles first? We are putting the debate to rest.

AtherGrid, our public charging network goes live today in Bengaluru! We would like you to meet 'Point' - the electric vehicle charging pod that's a part of AtherGrid.

Read more on our redesigned website: https://www.atherenergy.com/grid

There has been a lot of excitement around the S340 launch. However, we know for a fact that even the thought of adopting an electric vehicle (EV) is blanketed by anxiety about charging. That’s exactly why we are setting up this extensive charging network - to make adoption of EVs much easier.

Points are already up and running at 17 locations. We expect this number to reach 30 by the time the pre-orders for the S340 open in June.

Where can you find Point?
AtherGrid has been designed in a way that it seamlessly fits into your lifestyle. You will find Points at places you anyway go to, such as tech-parks, malls, cafes, multiplexes, and gyms. Also, they’ll never be more than 4 km away from wherever you are.

Fast, easy, and connected
The S340 can be fast-charged up to 80% in under an hour at any AtherGrid location. Also, with the Ather mobile app, you can find the exact number of Points that are available at a charging location and remotely check your charging state too.

Open for all
To drive electric vehicle adoption, we need a reliable and extensive charging network. AtherGrid is designed to offer a hassle-free charging experience, not just for Ather vehicles but all other EVs as well. Any electric vehicle that uses a 5A or 15A connector can be plugged in. Also, charging is on us (read free) for the first 6 months. For the S340 owners? Details coming up in June

But what about the S340?

Pre-orders open in June. Pricing details and detailed specs will be updated on our website on the day of launch. Expect a heads-up on all this and more. So keep an eye on your inbox, for you don’t want to miss them

Alright guys, its launching on June 5, actual Pre orders will be open then...

Expect a price of around Rs. 1 Lacs.
Yes, it will require registration and insurance as its a vehicle with a 72 kmph top end (above 25 kmph, reg. required).

I did some maths, and it seems over a period of 5 years of normal riding, this vehicle will bring huge savings which should offset its petrol counterparts, but I will have to know the cost of the battery to calculate beyond that...

Banglore guys, are you excited?

Re: Flipkart funded Ather S340 e-scooter to be launched at Bangalore in July 2018.

Two models have been launched as per their website https://www.atherenergy.com

Model 450 340
Power (ps) 7.3 5.9
Torque (NM) 20.5 20
0-60 (s) 3.9 5.1
Battery(KWh) 2.4 2.4
Range in eco mode (Km) 75 60
Top speed (Km) 80 70
Price OTR (Rs) 1,24,750 1,09,750

Note:The ather site does not have torque spec's, They are from news articles

Additional details

Front and read disk brakes and looks like 12" tires

Belt driven rear wheel

Has a reverse mode for tight parking spaces

Ather one is a plan that has maintenance+spare parts+RSA+cost of power for the life of the scooter at Rs 700/month or 2,200/quarter or 8,400/year

The interesting part about this plan is that Ather will refund the electricity used by you at your house to charge the scooter

The price is inclusive of FAME subsidy of 22,000, which means that the scooter actually costs the above price + 22000 which is very very high

Vehicle Warranty: 2 years/30,000 km

Battery Pack Warranty: 3 years/unlimited km

Fast recharge at 1km/minute

My observations,

No mention of regenerative braking

With 20NM of torque this is going to be a fun bike to drive in the city

No mention if the bike can be had without the subscription

The price is very high for a 2.4kW e-bike, considering that a NIU N1S power edition sells for ~ INR 75000 in china.

costs twice as much as hero electric bikes i think. hopefully the 'company' doesn't bomb in a couple of years down the line.

Re: Flipkart funded Ather S340 e-scooter to be launched at Bangalore in July 2018.

Rs 124000 is the on road price in Bengaluru for 450, so considering the overall ownership costs I feel it is not exorbitant at all.

In this cost is included:
1. Charging station at home
2. One year subscription pack, which takes care of
a) electricity charge which will be reimbursed
b) door step free service
c) all consumables such as break pads
d) free data for updating the firmware and other UI apps like maps etc.

So practically ownership cost for first year is free.

If you buy a petrol scooter with running of 1000kms per month and approx 50 km mileage you will pay approx 20000 rs a year for petrol (if it stays at 80 rs). which you save.

in the long term, yes you would have to include the cost of battery etc in the ownership cost, and how well a start up can deliver on such bold promises is to be seen, but I hope they are successful and change the EV scene in India.

For the target market, the young It crowd of Benguluru it is all going to depend on the User experience more than hardware specs.

Re: Flipkart funded Ather S340 e-scooter to be launched at Bangalore in July 2018.

The price is high but is expected to be considering all the R&D gone into the electric transmission and battery pack which is most likely imported. But the overall ownership cost for 5 years should be comparable to a petrol scooter or be even less going by their specs. This is nothing short of remarkable for an Indian company to come up with and with so long efforts gone into the planning and design. I hope it lives up to the expectation and will enthuse others to adopt and manufacture more such vehicles which will eventually make their costs come down.

For now the only things blocking potential buyers would be the high OTR price and charging facility but the latter is already solved as they will install a home charging point free of cost for buyers. The specs are not something to sneer at to and is quite decent for an electric vehicle and comes with a host of software accessories to monitor and control the vehicle characteristics. Since they are promising more charging stations over the city it should help most buyers to make a decision.

It is a jump some of us need to take against instinct because nothing new comes without risks so, I have pre-booked mine

Re: Ather S450 and S340 e-scooters launched with all inclusive Ather One Plan.

The example above shows mathematical working for a person running 1000kms per month. Means 250kms a week, or 50 kms a working day. The battery would hardly last 50kms, and he must now travel with the charger and park around a charging point every time he rides the vehicle. This greatly reduces the benefit of having a two wheeler as a private mode of travel, as you are now planning your travels around charging points.

Spending 1L+ on a new company's new vehicle with no track history is a great leap of faith. First year is happy for all vehicles. It's when you start needing mechanics for punctures and other trivial tasks that you feel the need of a wide-spread support.

Good to see the initiative, but at the same time, I will stick with burning petrol for the time being. If one is keen to experiment with his money, I don't see how other companies electrical vehicle products costing half of this are worse choices.

See if Arai gives it 100 kms+, and 60 kms is claimed by company in Eco mode, then 50 kms is a possibility, right?

Also, since Li ion always retain about 15% of their charge even if it is shown as 0%, then it means that your performance will not suffer in the last few minutes before the battery is emptied. (I've not experienced the vehicle, this is a general Li ion battery fact).

Punctures is not something you need the company for. They're tubeless tyres. So, you're free to repair on your own too. A lot of other trivial tasks of petrol, are not present in an electric motor, right? And who goes touring on an electro?

The other companies you mention, don't offer Lithium Ion batteries with this good range and performance. Their lead acid battery requires replacement every 1-2 years or so, and that anyways costs Rs. 12,000 or so. And their performance fades very badly.

As they say, a company's first product is the most expensive one. A whole lot of trust, dedication, sweat and persistence is required for it. I think later there will be better priced products.
As of now, the company has to think about the investors' return, isn't it?

However, I hope the AtherOne plan is optional after the first year. Rs. 700/ month is a good value, but on a 25 paise/ kms estimate, you need to ride at least 1750 kms/ month, which is approx 60 kms/ day, good for big cities though, but still too much for an electric vehicle, and yes, it may require multiple charges per day.

So far, the company's promotional material didn't emphasise low running costs enough... That's a big selling point. They only emphasised features and convenience.

You would think that repairing punctures should be a trivial task, but many road side mechanics simply freeze seeing an electric vehicle. They somehow think that they will get electrocuted if they touch the wheel (which is connected with the battery)! I suffered far too many times due to this.

When you ride a petrol vehicle, you don't need to keep an eye on the petrol meter daily. Once it gets low, you simply top it up and you are good for 200 or more kms. Even if one forgets completely, and scooter stops on a road due to running out of petrol, the remedy is very easy. It is not so in case of electric with a limit range of only 60-70kms. You have to travel with the charger and hope someone will lend their charging point to you!

I hope India makes progress on electric vehicles, but my experience is that the convenience is good till it lasts, but once the headaches start, there is no respite. Dismal (if not zero) resale value, fast diminishing support by company due to very limited support staff, and zero external support from any other mechanic are the points that stand strongly against these vehicles.

Spending more than Vespa 150 cost (which itself is too much!) on an unproven vehicle from an unknown company is simply too much risk.

I don't want to rain on this company's parade anymore than done already, so no more discouraging posts from me on this topic. Just wanted to share my past experience with such vehicles.

This doesn't have a wheel hub motor, so the mechanic won't feel that they will get electrocuted. The wheel will look like any other alloy wheel.
Every other electric scooter in India has a wheel hub motor sources mostly from China and apart from Hero most of the electric scooters are out right imported in Kit form.
Chinese Ev scooters sold in India also use Lead acid battery which does offer poor charge time, rapid battery life deterioration and there speedo/odo meter show more speed/distance covered then actual speed/Odo.

I do believe the Ather is overpriced by some 15k, people who buy electric scooter or cars are those who have individual charging point at their home and whose daily running is within the advertised range of EV vehicles, most of them charge them at night.

This looks like a genuine effort from an Indian Brand unlike a certain other *Cough*Okinawa*Cough* If i was in Bangalore i would've bought it considering how the showroom experiences were when many people visited them, i think they're doing the same thing what Tesla did, Bring some powerful scooters at first at a premium and later they will launch an affordable scooter, considering they've set up charging points at many places even before they launched the scooters, i think they are here to stay and will sell. 60 kms is enough imo, i don't think anybody's commute involves 60kms even two way atleast in Bangalore.
