  • KTM Duke 390 gets a slipper clutch

KTM has seen a great response since the arrival of the Duke 390. The motorcycles' performance to price balance has made it a favourite for entry level performance motorcycle buyers. Recent reports suggested the possibility of the fully-faired RC 390 getting a slipper clutch. A report by Autocar has confirmed the addition of a slipper clutch, but it's on the Duke 390 naked bike.

It must be noted that while the slipper clutch may have entered at the production end, multiple dealers are unaware of the same and claim that they have not received any communication regarding the update from KTM yet. Customers looking to buy the Duke 390 with the new clutch are advised to confirm its presence at the time of booking as the fresh consignment may not reach all dealers uniformly.

The slipper clutch is used to prevent the rear wheel of a bike from locking up during extreme downshifting/engine braking scenarios. Also known as the back torque limiter, it allows the clutch to slip until the engine speed matches the speed of the bike and doubles up as a safety mechanism. This enables the rider to downshift aggressively and keep the bike stable under heavy braking/spirited riding sessions.

The Duke 390 is powered by a 373.2cc, single cylinder, water-cooled engine that make 43 BHP and 35 Nm of torque. Its fully faired sibling - the RC 390 is likely to feature the clutch in the near future as well.

I remember seeing both D390 and RC390 coming up with Slipper-clutch for 2015. Not sure if it read it wrong somewhere.

Re: KTM Duke 390 gets a slipper clutch

News and speculations are everywhere but not a single owner has confirmed it yet and also there hasn't been any official confirmation.
I have felt the clutch of new D390 in showroom and its softer than that of the RC's but m sure that doesn't account for slipper clutch. We need some concrete news here.
It just unimaginable that KTM introduces slipper clutch and price is same. To top it, they are quiet about it. Slipper clutch in a 2lakhs bike is something to brag about. It was time they say that N300 is no longer the cheapest bike to offer slipper clutch.

You are all acting as though the slipper clutch is the next best thing to heaven, it presence will go unnoticed for most part and useful only in extreme riding conditions but still something an ABS can do as well.

Re: KTM Duke 390 gets a slipper clutch

In that case, ABS is also not a big things unless you are driving in an extreme situations. Things can be bragged about all day long, its just an info thats being passed here. ABS on Indian bikes were not there either before few years...

Re: KTM Duke 390 gets a slipper clutch

I sincerely am not desperate for slipper clutch. I am more interested in soft and smooth clutch. Slipper clutch doesn't actually mean soft clutch but I felt that the dukes clutch were actually easy on your arms compared to RC. So, slipper clutch or no slipper clutch, whatever they have done to the duke's should also be done on the RC's.

Radiator assembly is changed. i don't remember the technical term the technician told me, but it is related to follow of coolant. rear pillion seat angle is changed for more stability. These two changes aren't mentioned any where.

Is it possible to fit it in old RCs/Dukes? More than slipper clutch, I am interested in getting a softer clutch for stop-go traffic

I went to the KTM showroom today in Indira nagar, Bangalore to see the 2015 model of duke 390, and there was a display peace which the showroom guys told it's the 2015 model ... and I checked the vehicle the clutch seems to be still heavy and didn't feel like a slipper clutch. Also KTM said they will introduce Pirely tyres ( not sure about the source ) . That also was not there. Just curious , really the 2015 model is out on sale ? Also if somebody books the bike will they get the new model with slipper clutch ? The waiting period is 4 days . Any info please .

                              Thanks
