  • Honda surprised by Hero's 102 kmpl claim for Splendor: xBhp News

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has expressed surprise and questioned the claim of Hero Moto Corp for the Splendor iSmart of 102.5 kmpl.

HMSI says that they have developed the engine which Hero is currently using and as such they cannot see how this engine can return a whopping fuel efficiency of 102.5 kmpl as claimed by Hero. It feels that such claims are misleading and far from reality! Hero on its part has defended its claim by stating that this was certified by iCat (International Centre for Automotive Technology), a government authorised agency and as such it is improper of Honda to make such statements.

    News Approved.

We first need to know where Hero actually claimed the original 102.5 kmpl. Well, turns out they themselves didn't, atleast not initially, so they're right:-
Hero Splendor iSmart Tested As World's Most Fuel Efficient Bike | MotorBeam – Indian Car Bike News & Reviews

Central Government's International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT) made this claim. The previous iteration claimed 65 kmpl from an ARAI test. And in an ARAI test, Discover 100ES claims 96~ kmpl.

Big confusion indeed. Whom to trust and whom not to.

Compared to the Honda engine, you can say that maybe Hero made the AFR lean or other adjustments, but that can't make such a huge difference, straight from 65 kmpl to 102.

Even from my personal experience, I've seen people getting 65 kmpl on normal riding, and upto 70-75 in rare conditions when they ride carefully. So, are we to imply that the same people will be able to get atleast 90-100 kmpl easily on riding carefully??
    Well, maybe.

Irrespective of what figures other manufacturers claim, I would say Honda is ethical on this matter. I've seen them quoting realistic mileage figures, on almost all their products. Even their CB Shine was one of the bikes, which claimed less and delivered a little more only.
So, since Honda is saying this, I do believe they have a point... Although yes, the claim was made by iCAT... for whatever reason... (?)

From the day I first saw the ad, I was skeptical. It's really an unrealistic figure. 102 kmpl for a 97 cc engine is way too much!

Well, it is possible if the motorcycle has a fish like body with a space for driver lean in to and maintaining such a bike at constant speed.

Here is one such competition : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_V...nomy_Challenge

Why don't xBHP conduct such events annually to whatever may be the reason... It'll be good for Indian community.

A real test done by the OD team to imitate the so-called *ideal conditions* saw them Hero and Honda returning near 100 kmpl, and the Platina ES a whopping 132 kmpl

I think they have tested without rider only bike alone they should not mislead like this at least.

More likely is that the ICAT institution is a scam selling rigged results for interested parties.

Chill guys. These 100 cc bikes can deliver ~85-90 kmpl if ridden at about 40 kmph in test conditions (no wind blast, no sudden surge of acceleration, linear throttle movement, limited engine braking etc). Far from the ideal world.

Since when have we started believing in these quoted figures?

Absolutely! 75-76 kmpl is what one should actually expect out a 100cc mill if ridden/maintained well. Anything more is difficult in the real world without being a jerk, read riding dangerously (slow).

Well, hero has gone to both the limits. They claimed 35-40kmpl for zmr which, with no doubt returns 42-45 in city and 50+ on highways.
Now they claim 102 for ismart which returns 60-75kmpl!
Somehow, i feel, hero is ruining their own brand image..
Lets see how much they claim for hx250. Which might again take ages to come out to the market..

Correction on this part. Hero claimed 46 kmpl*. Its the SVC idiots who claim 35 kmpl all the time.

Its insane, But still I believe Splendor can deliver 70-80. If my 150cc can deliver 55 kmpl if ridden sanely so why not a 100cc. May be i-smart technology would be saving more 10 kmpl
