  • Two Wheelers to get costlier from April in Maharashtra

Following the announcement of Union Budget 2016, Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has raised the Motor Vehicle Tax on two and three-wheelers in the state. As per the new budget the motor vehicle tax in Maharashtra will go up to 10 per cent. The additional taxes will affect two-wheelers from 99cc going up to 300cc and above. Institutional and imported vehicles will be subjected to double the rate of tax. The new taxes will come to effect form 1st April, 2016.

Currently 7 per cent tax on two-wheelers and three-wheelers for personal use and a 21 per cent tax on vehicles bought by companies and undertakings. Talking about taxing criteria, Mungantiwar said, "Instead of levying tax on the basis of whether the vehicle is registered as a personal vehicle or company or office vehicle, we now propose to levy Motor Vehicle Tax on the basis of the cubic capacity of the vehicles."

Based on the new budget, the government will decide on the percentage of tax to be levied a two-wheelers as per engine capacity. According to reports, taxes on two-wheelers with engine capacity up to 99cc have been increased to 8 per cent; two-wheelers with engine capacity from 100cc to 299cc will go up to 9 per cent. As for two-wheelers 300cc and above engine capacity will be levied with 10 per cent motor vehicle tax.

As the same time as for imported vehicles and those registered by companies and undertakings will attract double tax as compared to their respective previous rates. This means tax on these vehicles with 10% will be 20%. As for CKD vehicles they will attract a vehicle tax of 10%. Overall, the state is estimated to earn net additional revenue of Rs. 363 crore from the various tax hikes it has proposed for 2016-17.

    News Approved.

Well, as if India losing a won match wasn't bad enough, here's more bad news. I wouldn't say its an unlucky day, but still.
Now they want to increase tax rate on higher cc bikes.. and imported bikes too. It sounds logical otherwise, but its still a bad news for enthusiasts.

So is the CKD 10% tax additional ... Guess purchase only 'Made in India' ...

As guaranteed, this will be transferred to buyers as the Lord Manufacturers will not bear it upon themselves. So the 4 lakh twin bike dream just became as 4.5 lakh dream.

Not wanting to go into a political discussion ... but this is bull.

The 10% on CKD s not additional but CC bracket does not apply. No matter what cc is the CKD, the tax will be 10%.
It has already started to be pushed to customers, the reason why I did all my formalities for my new bike before March end itself.

Honestly it's not bull, try buying a same bike in West and you'll be surprised the amount of taxes they're levied. Tax is important for the government, and looking at number of high end bikes demand and supplies that's the right move. Surely we're bikers but that should not blind us from the bigger picture of the state and the nation. They did the same for bicycles too some time back. And imports actually hurt the economy in many ways, this is how governments around the world counter it.

But unlike the West, the taxes we pay here go into subsidies, reservations, ministers' pockets and then what little is left goes into any namesake development.
And on imported bikes, we already pay heavy duties which are much more than in the west, which anyway make these bikes much more premium than they are in any other country.

Here in Kerala two wheeler above Rs 2 lac will attract 20% tax. I think its the highest in the country. R3 costs 4.1 lac in Trivandrum

Tax is important ... which is why I pay 30% on what I earn and 20% on what I spend if I want a good life. But it's not all a government should be worried about and not even a justification.

A person buying a high end bike doesn't mean he is loaded. Sometimes its a dream someone works very hard to achieve. Pushing that dream even farther just because it is more than XX cc is stupid. Why should cc matter at all ....

A motorcycle is a motorcycle is a motorcycle ... and a Ninja uses the road no more than I do.

Exports/Imports ... it is the way world has worked since dawn of men ... They hurt the economy of a particular vertical segment if there are going to undermine some product that is manufactured in the country. I'm not aware of a single twin manufactured in the country.

I knew my comment will attract flak, but I said it earlier being Motorcyclists we should not be blinded.

When you say "a motorcycle is a motorcycle is a motorcycle" that's exactly what the government says, "so why do you need such a heavy CC fuel guzzling motorcycle from outside?? why not a 100cc motorcycle which saves the environment" .

And the government finds it hard to understand the concept of "dream bikes" and "cut throat savings" for that dream bike even if you're not rich, Or twin, triples or inline 4s etc. For them it's all mathematics & economics & sadly none of these feelings are covered in these subjects. Else then they'll have think about those that have a "dream Car", "dream bicycle", dream this & that and what not. Honestly not at all possible.

This is exactly how ppl reacted when Bicycle import prices went up.

Honestly I was wondering how come this was not introduced earlier with the boom of KTMs & the mega fold demand of RE 500cc bikes.

On a side note only (approx 7000) premium bikes above 350cc are sold monthly in India where the the average monthly sales is 11 lakhs motorcycles.

Re: Two Wheelers to get costlier from April in Maharashtra

Looking at the argument above I am not sure which side I am on. I know government has to tax for money to run the state/country. But I think the government should look at widening the tax braclet rather than try to.maximise the intake from the existing channels. I know it's vehicle tax we are discussing here but IT is only paid by corporates and blue/white collars. Lakhs SME, small scale businessmen, the kirana wallahs and other shop keepers I think pay very little if at all. I mean I would like to see what's the self assessed tax the govt gets and what is contribution as compared to deducted at source. The vehicle/ road tax doesn't translate to any improvement whatsoever in the road infra. Every monsoon rain destroys the roads and they are shoddily fixed just to last till the next one so that contracts can be given/taken after the next one. Increasing taxes should not be the option everytime. Widening the bracket also needs to be looked at.

And the local manufacturers lobby is also at work.. Paying the party funds but keeping a tab on how the industry works...

Moreover they do not even bother venturing into the products they specifically suppress from outside world.
