    ISI-helmet rule withdrawn

    Guys, there's a good(or bad?) news.

In a letter to the traffic commissioner, BIS says conformance of helmets to Indian Standard cannot be assessed through a visual examination.

Traffic policemen on duty cannot decide the standard of helmets by a mere physical inspection and hence it is unfair to penalising bikers for wearing sub-standard helmets,” said Mr. R. Hithendra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

It means the Bengaluru bikers with full face ECE, DOT helmets are probably safe for now.

That being said.. I am in Bengaluru at the moment and was quite worried.. Even had the thought of buying a ISI certified helmet! Luckily, the day I reached Bengaluru. I got to know the ISI Helmet rule has been withdrawn!

I hope this rules doesn't end at the boundaries of Bengaluru only. It is applied across India, am I correct? Here in Kolkata I heard some people have been harassed by cops due to non-ISI marks helmets, now I do not know whether that was for low standard or better standard. I never faced the issue personally but if anyone has any updates on other cities than Bangalore please update us here.

          Fresh News:
Non ISI helmet sales to be banned – Upto 80 percent are sub standard

Non ISI helmet sales for two-wheelers will now be recognized as an offence by 2018 end. Government of India is mandating all helmet manufacturers to obtain Indian standards certification from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

BIS has informed Supreme Court panel on road safety that the compulsory move for ISI certification can be implemented in about 6 months time.

Basic economics suggests production costs of a helmet will range between Rs 300- 400 at the bare minimum. As per specs determined, the cost can’t be further reduced and that has opened a gap.

The question that still remains unanswered is how are cops going to be equipped to recognize originality of ISI mark on helmets as the Non ISI helmet industry has continued on a growth path undeterred until now.
