Both the bikes are certainly overpriced by atleast 50K.

Having said that, a lot of posts here have compared the two bike from BMW to the others in a sweeping way which is not far. the G310R is definitely something which will be compared to the rr310, D390, R3, new Ninja300 and the likes and we all know the it stands no chance esp at the price point. G310R is almost dead on arrival, and will not move after the initial euphoria dies.

But G310GS is a very different bike and built for a purpose. And there are not many options available in that adventure touring category. Himalayan came close but lack of power, unrefined engine, and lack of ABS worked against it. Next available bike which the baby gs can be compared to is the Versys300x, which is again overpriced at 4.7 Ex-showroom. So for people looking at light weight comfortable bike with relaxed upright ergonomics, good and comfortable suspension, decent on power, good on safely with switchable ABS, generous ground clearance, luggage provision, a lot of customization options, etc the baby GS is certainly very attractive.
I managed to take a small test ride this Saturday and liked the bike verymuch. Fit and finish is nice, seat is high and bike looks bigger then in pics. I feel this bike offers everything which the Versys 650 offers till 130kmph and would be an ideal bike for adventure enthusiasts, apt for city commuting with our broken roads, or for the weekend getaway and over-nighters. 50K less and it would be a win win situation for all but even now there were many takers. In Bangalore itself, there have been 205+ booking for baby GS and pan india the number stands at approx 1200+, which is not bad to begin with. With their current infra, they will not be able to service the bikes if they sell a lot, imagine just one showroom and service center for whole of Karnataka, with just 5 bays, most of which would be occupied by the bigger imported ones.
Did i book one? unhappily yes. Been waiting for a light weight adv bike for a long time, as i am tired of commuting on my versys 650 for 50kms daily in Bangalore traffic. even after 3 test ride of himalayan, was somehow not convinced, 390ADV is atleast 1.5years away so went ahead with this one. I am sure it will be a nice bike but the deal would have been much sweeter if it was priced a bit low.

One thing is sure , In india no matter how bad ,good,overpriced,underpriced product is , there always some customers willing to own it.

so its all comes down to one's preference of choice.

If we just imagine the bikes with TVS logo the entire argument of overpricing makes sense.
No sane biker will pay 4+ for a single cylinder 300cc with a TVS logo.
1.5 is the premium being paid just for the badge.

Congratulations mate and thanks for sharing your initial impressions. Yes even I would only buy the G310 GS if I have to get a BMW now. It's a proper mini Versys like you say. Good to know many prefer the G310 GS because I feel it's the better value proposition for now.

Yes, ₹50k hike in pricing is what BMW had to do keep the squids from entering the showroom. Otherwise there would another KTM/Bajaj type thing in the BMW/TVS partnership. The squids and angry teenage kids have spoilt the brand image of KTM in India. BMW doesn't want to repeat that scenario.

The Versys X-300 actually comes with ₹95,000 worth of OEM accessories. Going by what Kawasaki did with Z900, it would not be surprising to see if they launch a stock version of X-300 @ ₹3.6 or 3.7 lakhs soon, to spoil GS310 a party bit more.

₹50k for keeping the squids off the showroom,
₹50k for BMW premium experience and service
₹50k for exclusivity

So makes sense seeing their limited number of showrooms across India.

So people spending 1.5 lakhs less, value real biking experience huh? How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Because just three weeks ago many bikers valued the ₹12.8 lakh ZX-10R and it was sold out in a couple of days. There are diverse range of bikers in every price segment who want to enjoy the joy of motorcycling. Choosing one motorcycle over another doesn't reduce the 'real biking experience' from that motorcycle.

More the competition, increases the choice of buyers and hence more versatile motorcycles arrive for ownership in every segment.

There is no doubt that 310R and 310GS are overpriced, and after initial euphoria dies, both the bikes will not burn the sales chart. Guess different person will have their own reason, and not denying the fact that some of them may associate it to status as well. I am downgrading to baby GS from versys 650 as i feel this bike is more suited for my riding requirements. Give me the same bike with TVS logo and 70k less and i would be most happy to take it. Given me versys 300X at same price and i would think twice, as i know the pain associated with kawasaki service and spares. One broken plastic and the bike will be grounded for 6 weeks min, waiting for parts to arrive from Thailand. And with adv tourers and their height, falls are frequent. Also, not to mention the high service and spares cost.

A know a few who have big adventure tourers like Tiger, and ducati, and even 1200gs and are considering the baby GS as their 2nd bike for fun factor and light weight which is a BIG issue with the heavy adv tourers. A lot of people touring on Enfield's and Himalayans and Dominars will look at the 310Gs as a natural upgrade. The equation would drastically change when the 390 adv is out in the market untill then, these guys will do decent. The pricing of the BMW 310 twins is such that these have become the iphone of bikes in India, many would want it but few can afford it.

hope you already know the reputation of Bangalore SVC , how they rip off customers [as your teambhp member,might have known it] so careful.
and regarding spares and service cost, you will have to pay more than maintaining Kawa , that for sure.

Sire, Why are you so negative about these bikes and the brand? We all do agree that 310 twins are overpriced, but still some can afford and will buy for their own reasons. Does not mean their reasoning is flawed. It is understood that you yourself were very much interested in the 310GS and just cos its priced higher then your expectation, its all suddenly become bad and a no-go zone. No one knows about service and spares cost as of now and making statements such as - it will be more expensive then kawa is not at all justified. My boss owns a BMW 1200GS and i do ride that bike once in a while. So Yes, am aware of the overcharging issue with respect to part number being repeated, which you are referring to but the other side gives a different story with system based issue. No taking any sides there as i do not have full knowledge of that case. I make my opinions based on personal experiences and will call BMW a ripoff if i experienced so. But let us PLEASE give them a chance before jumping to conclusions.

Until the Duke 390 Adventure arrives and the Versys X-300 gets a price correction, the G310 GS is gonna get good numbers for this segment because there really is no competitor.
