Icon1 Volkswagen plans to sell Ducati

Volkswagen, Europe's largest car maker, plans to sell the Italian motorcycle brand 'Ducati' which it acquired in 2012 under the Audi division for about Euro 860 million. Sources say that currently, Volkswagen faces a financial crisis to increase the fund for streamlining the operations following the car emission scandal. Volkswagen is also reportedly cutting down thousands of jobs at its core passenger-car brand.

It is not the first time that Ducati is looking for a new owner. Since 1926, Ducati has seen the ownership of around a dozen different entities.

It is believed that Ducati may approach potential investors from China or even our very own Hero MotoCorp. It is not confirmed but even large competitors such as Polaris, Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, Honda or Kawasaki might show interest in the brand Ducati which made annual earnings of roughly Euro 100 million (before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization). It is estimated that up to 1.5 billion euros or 15 times its core earnings could be its current valuation.

Volkswagen Group sells passenger cars under the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen marques; motorcycles under the Ducati brand; and commercial vehicles under the marques MAN, Scania, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Well said but being an Indian MFG if Hero Motorcorp can buy Ducati it would be a pride for us. But of course how long this pride will remain would be an immediate question.

If Tata and JLR have leveraged each other’s strengths to improve both their volume and premium products why can't Hero....???

Oh come on! Don't compare Tata motors with Hero. The last weekend I visited one of the Hero showroom and the condition was really 'khasta'. No good product lines, no good showroom condition, only pilled up with old models with all looking like commuter segment. Hero might have sold a lot of units in commuter segment last decade but buying an Italian manufacturer company is not going to be their cup of tea. Anyways I shouldn't comment much on this sitting at home but that's my personal opinion only.

Hero motor corp was firstly partnered with Ebr..& look wat happened.. Ebr is long gone now.. & there is a huge difference between how tata motor works & hero motorcorp works... Tata motors are ambitious they were doing gr8 even before they acquired jaguar & rovers.. on the other hand...hero is out of the India bike segment from long time... Giving glamour & splendour new colour scheme is not an innovation. Sorry but hero motorcorp buying ducati is big no-no for me. This is just my opinion!!...

When tata bought jaguar and range rover even they didn't had any good product in their portfolio. Tata might hardly have interference in their operations. Since than tata only have three new products tiago, tigor and hexa. And that even in the interval of last 2 years. Jaguar and Range Rover have hardly anything to do with tata products or vice versa. So it have nothing to do with their own portfolio.

You are talking as if hero buys ducati they will start selling ducatis in hero showroom and service it in their service centres.

Yeah hero is too slow in their product development. That's because ebr went bankrupt in 2015. Hero have nothing to do with ebr bankruptcy. EBR needed way more funds to stay in operations. Where hero didn't seem in mood for it.

And yes definitely something is wrong with hero or they had 600cc hastur, hx250r, a diesel scooter, a electric scooter, a electric motorcycle working on hydrogen cells, a hybrid scooter and litre class supersport in their portfolio. They even developed a product for dakar 2017. So I don't think there is lack of vision or ambition rather it seems to be lack of determination.
