  • Ducati Streetfighter V4 tames corners with ease… and wheelies! (VIDEO)

After the official announcement a few days ago, Ducati has shared a video of the prototype Streetfighter V4 which is going to be racing at Pikes Peak. The video shows what a thoroughbred the Streetfighter V4 really is, tackling flowing curves and technical chicanes with ease… and wheelies!

On the saddle, we have Carlin Dunne who is an established Pikes Peak racer and a multi-time winner of the event. In the video, he’s heard saying, “The Ducati Streetfighter V4 is aggressive. It is a thoroughbred and we are learning to tame the beast.” And it is aboard this very beast that Carlin aims to reach the summit faster than any motorcyclist… ever. That’d mean a time of 9:45.624 or faster!

In the video, we can see multiple wheelies which seem like an easy affair considering the power that the Desmosedici Stradale engine makes. Though we do not know the exact numbers that it churns out while on duty in the Streetfighter V4, we believe that it is going to be in excess of 180 Bhp. And it is not surprising either, taking into account the power produced by the 1,103cc V4 on the new Panigale. And it has winglets too... which seems logical with the number of wheelies in the video. 111

The Pikes Peak race itself is not an easy affair. There are 156 turns in the course of the race in addition to the thousands of feet in elevation changes. Adding to the difficulty is the rapidly changing weather that varies on a day-to-day basis. The drastically varying levels of oxygen also affect the motorcycle and the power output. With 14,000 feet of elevation, the riders struggle as well because the riders go full-clip for 10 minutes straight. The exhaustion that accompanies racing is very real and it just gets worse with the elevation and the lack of oxygen.

We have tasted what a full-fledged flagship naked from Ducati can do in the form of a Ducati Streetfighter S1100 which we took for a roadtrip around Italy in The Great Italian Roadtrip. Here are some photos from the trip and you can read the travelogue here.

Love how barebone it is, no unnecessary shrouds or panels. True definition of Naked

      Except the winglets...
We are not sure if even those will be able to keep the front wheel down if the power is over 180 bhp!
But it does look smashing... No doubt about that.

I think the target is quite hard to achieve, but definitely possible. This beast will struggle to even redline in 1st cog I think, in some places, so a lot depends on its low to midrange torque and tractability feel.
Even in 2018, maybe a Duke 790 entered the podium (stood 3rd) against litre+ class heavyweights.

But, we wish him all the best anyways. His key would be to maintain momentum and use the low weight to his advantage, and maybe a smaller wheelbase if possible. Its ok to be a little unstable, if the timing is good.
And don't wheelie so much, lol.
But of course, jokes apart, he and his team know best.

People have died here too, so I pray for the best for Carlin.

He has won it on a Multistrada too which is supposedly a 'tourer'!

Yes, still I'm a litte doubtful.

We're talking about losing 7 seconds on a more peaky, less cc (it affects torque) and more sporty bike, so putting it all together, we can't be sure.

Plus, too many environmental factors too.

Pikes Peak is a strange place. Sometimes, an electric bike leads the entire gasoline counterparts by 20+ seconds, other times a middleweight like Duke 790 climbs the podium.
            And of course, Superduke 1290R...
Of course, Multistrada mostly has good torque from way below the rev range...

In torque graph, Ducati Panigale V4s is like a BMW S1000RR in the low rpm, give or take. Then after 6-7krpm, it leads the way slighty, due to more cc's. (of course, we have tuned S1000RR's too this time)
This Streetfighter V4, I have no info yet, if they tuned it? We will soon know..

            Let's see.

In an unfortunate event, the rider Carlin Dunne has passed away after a crash on his Streetfighter V4 during an record attempt on Pikes Peak
Four-time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb winner Carlin Dunne is being mourned by the motorsport world after the 36-year-old was killed in a crash at the iconic Colorado race on Sunday.

              Really sad incident

You really called this and foreseen it even before it happened, I pray for his soul and his family, this man left this world while doing what he loved.

Yeah. I had this negative feeling right away.
At that time, my mind frame was like, you're expecting a top of the line racer to shave 7 seconds over last time, I thought it was over ambitious...
This too, on a peaky, sporty machine, probably not particularly great at its low rpm torque (Talking about Panigale, the source engine).
If it was me, I would've made a target of 2 second improvement, at best...

Its like expecting Rossi/ Lorenzo to shave 0.5 seconds off the best lap time ever for any racer, for a particular circuit... on a weaker machine (for the specific purpose).
The last-ranking guys may aim for huge improvements, not the chart toppers and definitely not on the best time posted ever... So, I did get negative feelings.

But Anyhow, my past thoughts as such have no relevance now, because even in the last times, he was incredibly fast on the S Prototype.

May God bless his soul. A rider departed is always a shock, whether it was an online friend from Delhi or Hyderabad or a known racer...
