Zigwjeels: New Pulsar 220 DTS-i will be the fastest Indian bike!
Zigwheels: New Pulsar 220 DTS-i will be the fastest Indian bike!
Set for a June 23 launch, the bike promises to kill competition with cut-throat pricing and class-leading performance. We have the details!
Bajaj Auto will be launching the 2009 version of its flagship Pulsar 220 tomorrow. Indian motorcycle enthusiasts need not be cynical of this particular upgrade - it is far from being a rouge and lipstick sticker job. The new Pulsar 220 will be the fastest Indian bike. We have ridden the bike and have complete figures, but our dear readers will have to wait until tomorrow to get the complete details.
Here's what we can tell our visitors for now. Bajaj Auto has taken the fuel injection system from the earlier bike off - the 2009 Pulsar 220 will be a DTSi, breathing through a carburetor. Stop before you think this is a step backward, since the new bike will be the fastest Indian street motorcycle with a claimed top speed in excess of 140 km/h. Our test figures match the claim!
That's not the best news though. Taking the FI off will give the new bike a stupendous price advantage over its competitors. Fuel injection is an expensive technology, and getting it off should give the new 220 a price advantage of about Rs. 10,000 straight up. That should bring it down to the price of the current Pulsar 200 DTSi, that's around Rs 70,000 ex-showroom Delhi.
The competition definitely has a fight on its hands, given that the new bike will be offering the best performance figures of the lot at a significantly lower price than its key competitors in the Indian performance bike market - the Yamaha YZF-R15 and the Hero Honda Karizma. But how fast is it in real world conditions? Any new bits apart from the carb? Does it have the handling to go with the power? Read it all in our breakneck speed first ride report early tomorrow, right here on ZigWheels.com!

So its seems the 19Nm @ 7000RPM thing is true!Originally posted by insanebiker View PostFew more specs
U can see the new speedo background here. Hope Bajaj has atleast changed the backlight color this time
This bike makes slightly lesser torque at a slightly later RPM. The P220 Fi makes 19.12Nm @ 6500 RPM. These guys are going the R15 way! To extract more out of the same engine they seem to have narrowed the powerband!!!
I am more interested to see how it hits the above mentioned topspeed!Originally posted by payeng View Post

They can retain the same tread pattern and yet give a softer compound. I wonder if its even in the range of what the Zapper Vyde offers!!Originally posted by insanebiker View PostFrom the scoop pics, the tyres seem to be the same

Suspension changes if any would most prolly not be visible, only thing I guess they would have done is prolly made the rear stiffer...but then what about the front!!Originally posted by payeng View PostWhat about the Rumoured Soft compound tyres and Suspension tweak..??

Could not spot the alteration, please point it out!!!Originally posted by satyenpoojary View Post+1

Its a good offering,,
i still will go with the Fi if i will pick a 220.
FI is something that figures dont justify. It may produce a lil lower pwr than the 220 carb, but
Its the linear power delivery that i liked the best on fi.

@payeng : Pricing will have little or no effect on competitions, Zma, R15 and Pulsar220 have their own USPs. For instance you have R1 styling and Yamaha badge on R15 a dream track tool, Zma is super commuter and a proven tourer.Originally posted by payeng View PostI would actually doubt that.. the R15 still has the R1'esque Full Fairing, which would sell it in India, even if it might be slower.
But yes, if the price really is 80K OTR then it can take a bite out of ZMA sales and also affect the RTR 180's chances. And with almost 25-30K less than the R15, it could effect the buying decision of a few potential R15 buyers as well.
Pulsars still have to etch their USPs loud and clear in the premium segment (P220 is not a comfortable commuter like Zma nor proven tourer like Zma, P220 is not a track bike either). Remember P220 DTSi is a result of poor sales of P220 DTSFi. As of now the only USP would be 'Fastest Bike' tag, only time will tell the truth about success of P220 DTSi..
