  • TVS Motor Company completes acquisition of Norton Motorcycles

TVS Motor Company has announced the successful acquisition of Britain’s most iconic sporting motorcycle, “Norton”, in an all-cash deal for a consideration of GBP16 million by acquiring certain assets of Norton Motorcycles (U.K.) Limited (in administration) through one of TVS Motor’s overseas subsidiaries.

This will be one of the most interesting acquisitions of a storied motorcycle maker in recent times and will reflect TVS Motor Company’s and India’s rapidly rising prominence in the international two-wheeler market.

Founded by James Lansdowne Norton, in Birmingham, in 1898, Norton Motorcycles is among the most popular British motorcycle brands of all time and is one of the most emotive marques today. Since the 20th century, Norton Motorcycles is renowned for their classic models and eclectic range of luxury motorcycles ranging from authentic retro classic reboots of the famous Commando to their contemporary 200 bhp, 1200cc V4 super-bikes.

Commenting on the acquisition, Mr. Sudarshan Venu, Joint Managing Director, TVS Motor Company said, “This is a momentous time for us at TVS Motor Company. Norton is an iconic British brand celebrated across the world, and presents us with an immense opportunity to scale globally. This transaction is in line with our effort to cater to the aspirations of discerning motorcycle customers. We will extend our full support for Norton to regain its full glory in the international motorcycle landscape.”

Mr. Sudarshan Venu further added, “Norton will continue to retain its distinctive identity with dedicated and specific business plans. TVS Motor will work closely with customers and employees in building the success and pre-eminence of the Norton Motorcycles brand and we look forward to growing together globally in the years to come.”

TVS Motor Company is excited about the existing and upcoming products at Norton Motorcycles including Commando, Dominator and V4 RR. Confident of the strong synergy between both the brands, we believe that Norton Motorcycles can leverage TVS Motor Company’s global reach and supply chain capabilities to expand to new markets.

The acquisition was undertaken under the guidance of financial advisors, Rothschild and Co, and legal advice for the transaction was provided by Khaitan & Co, and Slaughter and May.

Looks like by 2022-23 finally we might get two rivals for Interceptor, one from Bajaj-Triumph and another from TVS-Norton.

Nice to see Indian companies acquiring foreign brands.

Hopefully TVS will gain that much needed strategy to target the premium customer base in the above ₹3lakhs segment. They already have an excellent manufacturing capacity.

    Cheers!

Its a proud moment for India. The technology sharing and mutual learning will go a long way in making both brands better, in different attributes though.

I've given my comments on this (at that time, possible) deal, that every Indian Bike maker needs a talented motorcycle partner from abroad, that is versatile and flexible. Not like Kawasaki, not like BMW, not like any one among the four Japanese Giants. A partner that's more like KTM...

And I believe Norton could as well prove to be that partner... The ever flexible, talented, although I wouldn't use the word 'practical' yet... Only time can tell, but if I have a say, I'll say it will be more effective than BMW. But that's just thinking as an Indian..

The bigger news globally is however, that we saved the British brand. Thank you TVS for this decision.

NORTON Motorcycles are SAVED! TVS MOTORS buys NORTON!

Just like Re in India, Norton is to UK, never thought of that. The brand definitely needed the redemption , Thanks to TVS. Hope they make wonders in future like Bajaj did with KT M.

Still have some heavy thoughts about this situation. All business experience difficulties and unfortunately Norton does too. Their motorcycles offer such a personal and unique movement. Still remember my first ride on Haybusa, it was unforgettable. I believe, TVS Motor Company as well will have success.

Tata didn't save JLR but are brought them untold suffering, big time suffering due to it, it has brought down the business outlook of this huge auto company because of this mistake. It is not the job of companies to save other companies, it is to make profits while increasing the sales.

I think for once TVS has made a bad bet and it is going to regret it soon. Norton as a motorcycle company was completely bankrupt and the now ex owner Stuart Garner has several cheating and fraud cases against him and they even cheated many customers of their pre-booked bikes by neither refunding the money nor delivering the bike. The company couldn't make profits from the last 10 years due to rising competition and higher costs of production and weak business model. I don't think TVS will make any money of this by making the same models which failed to sell there. The only hope is they got license to the Norton name using which they can make lesser capacity global models in the range of 250-500cc in India and export it, it is all a big iff.

Not everyone can pull off a Royal Enfield, at least RE had a following in India on which formed a base for their turn around models and expand internationally, TVS can't do the same that too by keeping manufacturing in UK.
