Bajaj to launch bike with KTM in FY12

Country's No.2 motorcycle maker Bajaj Auto, which is jointly developing power bikes with Austria's KTM, plans to launch a model in the next financial year, a top official said on Tuesday.

"The product...will first be launched in Europe and then in India, sometime during the next financial year," S. Sridhar, chief executive officer of Bajaj Auto's two-wheeler unit told reporters. The bike, to be assembled at the company's plant in western Indian city of Pune, will be marketed under the KTM brand and would be priced at more than 100,000 rupees ($2,096), Sridhar said.

In April, Bajaj Auto said it had invested 20 million euros to raise shareholding in KTM to 35.7 percent from 31.9 percent.

There My lord! MG has indirectly suggested that this will be a small bike.
So this will surely be a < 220 CC bike

And look he said "the" bike

You won't get anything bigger at the price tag of 1lakh. Even the Indian manufacturers will think twice leave alone KTM.

                Yup agreed!
                P220 - 70K Odd
KTM125/1XX - 1,000K+ Woot they have a problem in hand! Atleast when it comes to sell something in India!
Make that a 150-180 and it has a magic number (with a small 35CC oversize!!)

PS: Whats the lowest CC Cap for the entry level license in Europe? I guess it will be bang on there!

Lowest cap is either 33PS for most entry level motorcycle licenses (atleast it is in The Netherlands). And in some countries you can ride a bike upto 125CC (15PS max) with your car license (in France if I recall correctly).

Am talking about entry level motorbike drivers license, preferably in a country where KTM has a decent penetration!

The issue is that the rules with regard to motorcycles are actually quite diverse across different european states. Some countries have stricter rules then others. However there has been some work on getting more uniform licensing rules across Europe. So for a major part it's 125cc and 11KW (15PS), with exceptions for several countries.

I still think that Bajaj-KTM could have commanded at least 50K more with just a full fairing. When an air cooled bike can sell with a full fairing in India, this one will at least have liquid cooling.

Personally I would rather not have extra plastic (full fairing) on my bike.

This is news "But fresh information suggests that the bike will be priced around Rs 1 lakh. A 125cc bike at that price will not fetch large numbers in terms of sales, which mean that the firms might be looking at launching a bigger bike, probably 200cc plus. Praise the lord!"
