I am waiting for my Bahrain motorcycle licence and hence am not able to head out to open roads near the southern tip of the island. The previous owner of the bike had provided info on the nicer roads and I am so desperately waiting to head out and rip the hell out the the bike .

The licence training (DUH!) and test will be held next month, during the last days of Ramadan, so I am hoping to head out for the weekend and holidays that follow.

I am now deciding for a lid to buy. Yeah, I know the q belongs to the Univ thread, but here I guess people can offer a better experience when it comes to safety with SBKs.

I have a linking for two AGV lids: one is full face, the other is modular (aka flip-up), the latter being priced at twice the amount as the first one. I am wary of flip-ups, but would like to open the front at occasions to show my beautiful face to the crowd...nah, just get some air in the hot, humid climate.

How safe is a flip-up compared to a full face? Not as much, but is it worth a trade for a the extra air supply?

Sunil, I have all 3 types- An HJC open face, an Arai full face and my favourire Nolan Flip-up. I did a lot of research before buying the flip up and settled for the Nolan. My first choice was the Schubert, but that was too expensive and ventilation was just OK. The Shoei Syncrotec/Multitec was good overall, but again very pricey. The Nolan was next best and it is widely used in many places including by bike cops in Europe. Here are my comments on flip-ups:

- Almost all of the flip-ups/modular made by branded manufacturers (Schubert, Shoei, HJC, AGV, Nolan, KBC, Vemar, Scorpion etc) have an excellent latching system for the jaw piece & they wont open just like that in the event of a crash unless it was not secured properly.

- Never ride with the jaw section open. Only open it when you are stopped.

- If you are more into touring, then the flip up is undoubtedly one of the best tools for the job. Putting/removing eyeglasses or sunglasses, Fuel stops, drinking water, asking for directions, photography or just stopping at the signal on a hot & humid day is all easier with the flip up.

- Lastly a few years back a friend of mine took a fall and totalled his bike. It all happened in the middle of a mountain region and when the mud & dust settled and I went running towards him, his DL650 was resting on his head with the helmet ofcourse. We pulled him out and his riding gear had saved him. Here is the pic of his helmet (not posting the bike pic as it will frighten you). BTW, it was a AGV flip-up helmet.



At the end, buy what makes you comfortable. If you like the full face & feel more confident with it, then go for it.
