I went to KRP some days back and am keen to buy a 600 cc supersports, preferably Honda, but only next year. He said come when you are ready to buy. But still want to know what will the cost be like and what about them being legal. I really think a 600 cc or something like FJR is a much practical and usable choice than the hardcore 1000cc madhouses.

I do not know if this is the right place fr my questions. I am confused with different species of litre class bikes available. Its not that I am buying something in the near future, but still I would like to get my doubts cleared.

As Ken has explained in the beginning about the various classes of bikes, but I would still like to know what are bikes like Yamaha MT01, Honda CBR 1000R, Yamaha FZ1, Suzuki Bandit called?

Why would one buy a Yamaha MT01 when you have likes of Honda CBR 1000R, FZ1 etc?

the bikes mentioned in bold above are of different categories
the honda CB1000R and FZ1 belong to the street fighters, while bandit(with fairing) is called a sports tourer. the MT01 on the other hand is a Sports Torque.

So coming to street fighters - similar to sports bike engine (not exact but similar) they are naked monsters with slightly less power than their sports counterparts. They are essentially for city use with comfortable sitting posture with straght handle bars and less rpm limit engines.
Now sports tourers(Bandit) on the other hand has similar engines to streetfighters just that it also has a half fairing which adds to comfort at higher speeds while touring long distances. this also gives them slight advantage on top speed compared to nakeds.Apart from that no other difference.
Yamaha MT01 - being called Sports Torque this category of bikes have similar (not exact, but similar) engines to cruisers. small bore, larger stroke, which gives them enormous torque. The power they pump is enough to pull cars along. though they're not so high reving engines result in lack of top speed. for eg. the MT01 goes just beyond 200kmph (somewhere upto 210kmph) but generating so much torque it can pull massive load upto higher speeds compared to full fairing track bikes like R1 or CBR1000RR. So its like a mix of cruiser+streetfigher charateristics.FYi -
Max. Torque of 150.3Nm at 3750rpm
and mind you its air cooled cos its not made to rev too high.

The reason why someone would by an MT01 is if that someone needs a cruiser type relaxed but torquie engine and the sitting posture of streetfighter. I hope this is satisfactory enough.

Hmmm.............Thanks for enlightening me. Things have become a lot clear. If I want a bike that has good pull across all the gears. I mean good bottom end pull (for City riding), as well as good midrange and top end (for frequent touring), then which bike a CBR1000RR or CB 1000R would fit the bill? If not they then what are the other options?

Also, as MT01 has oodles of torque, does it mean that it has faster 0-100 and 0-200 timings than a R1 or CBR1000RR?

Yep, bikes like the CB1000R or the FZ1 are are good options for city riding, however, tourers generally prefer farings(half) to protect them from powerfull wind blasts.
Regarding the MT01's torque-imagine bruce lee fighting a mamoth of a Human body builder. A few punches at the right spot would be enough to bring down Mr. Lee. however, Mr. Lee being so fast can place over 20-30 Punches at the right spot within that same time.
The MT can pull an endeavor(ford) faster through a distance or say 100m, while the R1s or CBRs will take longer time. Thus with higher torque figures the MT has a good pickup but its only upto a few RMPs which is not enough to take it to 100kmph faster than Superbikes.

one small question, which might sound noob to you. Why are the middleweight bikes called, "middleweight". As far as the weight (dry or wet) is concerned, I didnt find any big difference (a SBK probably 5 kgs more than a SS) between them. So what makes them called middleweight?

e.g. my beloved CBR600F, a well known middleweight from Honda, weighs almost the same (~200 kilos) as its big bro fireblade.
