Re: Booked my Brute - Iron883. My story..

This post is to detail the gear I bought and what I thought of the gear that I have got, u can think of it as a review of the things..
Sry for being late but I was busy and free time went in taking my Schatten out..

First comes the most important thing according to me "The Helmet'.
I read somewhere that the value of the helmet is directly proportional to the value of ur head.
Though I already had a helmet from Studds but looking at the quality of these helmets I knew that I would have to get it as it was
far superior in quality, protection and looks.
This one had vents, shatter-proof visor and an added sun-visor.

Next comes the most expensive protection gear that I got.

The Jacket provides a lot of protection and also has pockets for adding the armor for protecting your elbows and shoulders in the event of a crash,
though I didn't do it as I felt the protection provided is enough for me but would be needed for long journeys.
The jacket is very well vented with vents located at the front & back and on the shoulders. And in winters I can close the vents for a warmer feel.
So this works all round the year.

For gloves I never wanted the Full Gauntlet gloves, I always had the short gloves in mind.
These provide great protection at the palms but almost no protection at the knuckles.
They provide only abrasion protection and no impact protection but I liked them for the mesh design
as it offers brilliant venting and for a country where we have high temperatures for 7 to 8 months these are a sensible choice.

I did buy the riding boots as well and I think that they're a very important piece of protection cause in case you stop haphazardly or on an uneven surface
they help in keeping your ankles safe and also provide excellent protection in the event of a crash.
But I haven't taken any pics of the boots. Will upload them soon.

I'll second you on that bro and going a step further I'll say that in looks department HD 48 is the best Harley but I found out in test ride that it is one uncomfortable ride, you'd need a seat and shocks upgrade.

Re: Booked my Brute - Iron883. My story..

Congrats Buddy, keep adding miles to it.

And one thing i noticed in your first post as how you jumped HD by sudden acc. & clutch . which clearly shows inexperience. Please ride carefully and keep your speed limited at reasonable level and never cross 100KMPH till you get good experience of riding two wheeler, and never experiment for first few months, always ride safe & sure,

I know its seems like preaching but trust me you will thanks yourself for careful & safe riding.

And most important Enjoy. Man you are riding Harley Davidson.
Drive FAST but not Rough, Drive SAFE But not Slow.

Thanks buddy for your wishes.
I guess you've misread me in the first post, it was a controlled launch to test the acceleration of the bike and it absolutely rocketed..!!!

Hey Buddy, how's ur purchase plan shaping up? Haven't got much movement here so I wasn't posting new things either. But I'm here to be of assistance in any way possible.

Went for a few rides, got the service done too.

My bikes parked in my office parking space(house under construction) so riding has been only in small patches but I do take it for a spin around India Gate which is very close to my office whenever I get time and getting early to office has been my thing now. That way I can get some riding time early morning.. 'Best start to the day if u ask me'

The service was expensive to be honest 7500/- in my opinion was a bit too much especially when u r saving for some mods.

Now about the bike..
It gets HOT..!!! Like really hot especially around the right thigh and u can cook it if ur not wearing denims and I mean DENIMS.. Better to know the difference between Cotton Jeans and Denim Jeans before the bike teaches u that. Denim is heavier and provides better insulation.

Ride comfort is on the low side but that is caused only by the seat. The bike runs absolutely smooth, no question about that but the stock seat IMO was made to feel good only for the test ride that u take before booking cause anything more than 100-120 kms or 30-50 kms in traffic, would be really uncomfortable, so I'm planning on a new Two-up seat instead of jus adding a pillion seat pad. Even the pillion would Thank me for it. The one I currently have in mind would set me back by about 16 thousand.
The riding posture is perfect IMHO and you'd jus Ride on and on and on and on... It's jus AMAZING..!!!

THIS BIKE IS SMOOTH..!!! But if u flog it, it can vibrate your joints loose.. I usually keep it in a relaxed rev range and with the gloves on, I don't feel a thing..!!
The vibrations increase with the engine revs and you'd be happiest riding around 90 Kmph in the fifth gear.

I will soon start doing minor modifications to the bike.. Currently in the planning and researching stage. I'm restricted by the warranty clause so will work on the look of the exhaust instead of the sound and would later go for the sound after the warranty period is through, though u never know when the urge to have the earth shaking thump can get the better of u.. Cause then u become totally helpless...!!!! Looking for other cosmetic changes 'one thing at a time' cause leave alone 'getting the mod'; even planning for it is an exciting affair..!!!
Loving everything right now..!!!

Cheers bro.

Hi Harshit,

I am awaiting delivery for my Superlow this month or by Jan'2015. Your thread has been informative; I was not really planning for a seat upgrade but with your inputs on the stock seat I will need to re-think. Assuming that the Superlow has the same stock seat as that of Iron. The heat as you mentioned is going to be a menacing factor in our Summers. Also can you share the price you paid for the Moustache engine guard for your Beauty as well as the riding gear break-up. As of now I have only ordered the most important gear for me a LS2 FF386 Helmet. Hopefully we'll ride together once I have my beauty.
Thanks, Abheek

I too felt that stock seat was not up the task when I got my bike. However 23k km later, I find it of no problem. may be my buns have carved a shape or seat has carved my buns. hehe

Dushyant Bhai, I see myself up to the task as well . Its been 11 years with stock seat on my Bullet on which the seat comfort has not been exceptional. Adaptability is the need of the hour as any seat upgrade from HD is going to further increase the already punctured hole in my wallet.

Hello Pistolharry,
My purchase is still pending. I am sitting on my money pile, waiting for it to hatch chicken :-)
I am targetting 1st qtr 2015 to pony up....still some time to go !! (Drumming my fingers now )

So 7500 for the service huh ? Did they have to change any parts, or was it the cost of regular service ?
Good pointer on the DENIM.....I would have never known.

Last week, I saw a Harley Iron on the way back home. Saw the bike ahead of me. The guy had side mounted plates, had added rear seat with backrest, LED fender mounted tail light. The bike definitely had a premium look on first sight ! Too bad I couldnt pull him over for a conversation. Traffic was pretty hectic !

Will keep you guys posted !

Hi Abheek,
The heat from the engine is gonna be a massive factor in the summers for sure but you'd rarely find yourself stuck in heavy traffic with it since these bikes are normally taken out when there isn't much traffic. Superlow is also a comfortable bike but the seat would be a factor again. Though these seats do have a break-in period and its possible that u will find it comfortable eventually. But that is when the seat leaves you with a sore bottom, in my case I was having cramps in the side joint which meant that the sitting position is not good.
I chose the Mustang Fastback seat but it was costing me around 33-34 thousand so I went for something from the Harley stealers which would be for about 16. But this seat too would have a break-in period. Hopefully that one would be a better fit. But whatever u do don't make changes right off the showroom floor, ride the bike and you'll know what needs to be changed. You would need a two-up seat soon cause friends and family would want to join you on a ride. But its better to take time with the bike and decide.
The only qualm I have with a Superlow is the road presence. I feel that it really lacks road presence that other bikes have.

The riding gear I have got (I have shown them with pics in a previous post):
Helmet was for 10,000/- but you already have that.
Gloves were a little less than 3000/-
Jacket I got for about 8,000/- in a sale from Harley and a sale on merchandise is gonna start from 23rd, Dec and you wouldn't wanna miss it.
Mustache Engine Guard was for 18,000/-.

We would ride together for sure. Would love to welcome u to the family..!!

Hey Harshit! Appreciate your responses on my queries. My regular riding is going to be on the smooth Noida-Gr Noida expressway stretch. Traffic is not really a concern on this route which should aid lesser heat. But bottom line Heat or no Heat do we really care . We just want to enjoy the pure Harley heritage along with the rush of a 900cc vtwin. So yes as of now will go for only for stock seat along with the pillion one. I don't really want my wifey to be angry at me.
And the moustache engine guard, I kind of like that one more than the other round one. Gosh18k for a good old leg guard, man these accessories are expensive.

Hi Abheek,
It's my pleasure to be of any help buddy, the worst period is yet to come brother, starting about week before delivery things like 'am I taking the right step?'; 'you really wanna do this?' and more would start clouding ur brain..haha I would like to hear about that too..!!!
And about the accessories I talked to a HOG who has custom made about 5-6 bikes; what he does is buy a Harley ride it and customize it along the way and finish it in a year or two; then he finishes it with a couple of expensive mods, rides it for some period and takes it into a show where he sells it for a good sum to start over again. He has been lucky that his bikes have got good attention at these shows to get him good money and he pursues his passion of building and riding bikes with that money. Would share some of his wisdom in the coming post. Some notable things. That might explain why the accessories are expensive. But they really are quality products.
See you on the road sooon brother..!!!
Take Care.

Ok good to know about your comment on the guy into expensive mods an all, yes absolutely share all the wisdom. So that all xbhpians may benefit from it. My LS2 FF386 'L' size helmet got delivered day before. Got it from snapdeal but apparently it did not fit my head. Asked for a replacement but not really sure if that would be feasible. The ones posted on the site are all 'L' size.
Tell me something, the permanent number and all RTO formalities would be done by the dealer, right. Or is their a catch there?

hahaha This actually is the most exciting period..!!
You're brave to be ordering anything from snapdeal IMO.. but more so with riding gear cause it should fit you perfectly for it to be wearable on even fairly long rides leave alone actual long travels on the bike. The RTO thing would be taken care of by the dealer himself so no problem there..
Now for the pearls of wisdom from the horse's mouth itself..

"Some observations and lessons learnt on the way!

1. Stock componenets on a motorcycle are designed to withstand tremendous abuse and are almost
always extremely durable and functional. Moving them around on a bike ( aka Relocation) and
replacing them with fabricated/ 3rd party components can make your motorcycle less
functional and less reliable.

2. A Harley will mercilessly pound on a non stock part till it breaks or falls off!
(even accesories from the H_D chrome catalogue do fail!) The replacment part you fabricate
better be good to take the relentless torture.

3. Even a seemingly harmless fault, like a fused bulb, a broken clamp holding say the speedo
can ruin your ride significantly. So on a daily rider, be really carefull about custom
components. Mediocrity will just not cut it.

4. Avoid any chinese custom part. They look like the real deal, but almost always fails, and
each one I have tested has flaws that makes the component unfit for use.

5. When fabricating relocation clamps, be real careful. Coil and Ignition key relocation look
very uncomplicated, but both can render your ride unsafe. If the ignition is relocated to
the V of the cylinders, the vibrations from the engine can cut a nasty slot on the ignition
key that will render the key unusable. Stick to ready made relocation kits from DK customs
or the likes if you are unsure about your engineering capabilities.

6. Do one part at a time.

7. Do a thorough shakedown run AFTER ANY NEW modification is made, however minute it may seem.
You will be suprised to see how easily some things fail."

Hope this helps..!!
