to buy legal or illegal??thats the question...
hey guys ill be soon picking up an 05 0r 06 R1 or CBR...n to tell you the truth i wouldnt know if it is a legal import or not!...i mean i read a lot of article on xbhp saying about legal imports and illegal imports....but can i ask you does it really matter that much???coz as far as i believe i wont be taking the bike for movies or to buy groceries but for simple pleasure rides with my wife n that too in the mornings or nights or weekends!! and i seriously dont believe that in my state any cop would stop an SBK n ask for import papers...yeah they would stop me mayb for curiosity!!!n even so it would just be insurance and pollution!!which i would have....the general impression is that SBK owners are rich and would have some political conatct and in India these are the two things which matter!! i mean its not like you are taking the bike out every other hour and gets checked by the cops!!! i just dont understand the whole fuss on buying legal bike for 12 lakhs???????.....finally all the legal and illegal bike owners...could you plzz tell me if ANY ONE..i mean ANY SBK owner of you has been stopped EVER by a cop n asked for import papers?????waiting for expert opinions.....i remember a quote" 12 lks~ peace of mind...7 lakhs~save 5 lakhs...id rather save the 5 lakhs than peace of mind"....i stand for it.......smoking weed is for kids.....i smoke asphalt!Tags: None

cops cant n will never ask you for IMPORT papers, they are more concerned with the valid insurance and RC book,, yeah DRI officials might stop and probably seize your bike if your bike is not LEGAL, thought hardly SBKS r legally imported, so be carefull and make sure you get all the papers when u buy any bike from any one.

What you do in the end is your choice, but I have been stopped on numerous occasions for random checking etc. The curiosity factor is undeniable, but don't be mistaken that papers will not be checked because you have an SBK.
As for spending 7 lakhs, saving 5 or whatever.. check some recent postings where DRI officials have confiscated bikes from Mumbai, and from what I hear, there were raids in Bangalore as well last night. Spend 7 lakhs, save 5 lakhs, and lose 7 lakhs?? By all means, go ahead."Tough times never last, but tough people do." - Robert Schuller

Well said. If you have no issue spending 7 lakhs, it is better that you spend it on a legal SBK and pay the rest off by EMI or something. With that extra money u get peace of mind, service and spares backup, full comprehensive insurance and a lot many benefits. Ultimately its ur call though.Originally posted by rossiter View PostSpend 7 lakhs, save 5 lakhs, and lose 7 lakhs?? What the DRI officials do about what you said is left to them. But one cannot underestimate them as they are one of the most powerful enforcement/vigilance agencies in the country, if not the most. The kind of power they have is terrifying.Originally posted by dreamchaser View Postyeah its the same halla gulla abt them...i can understand raids in mumbai n blor n that too most probably more with dealers rather than any single owners......so what about bikes that get sold off to other states like kerela where i am from n tamil nadu....small rich towns like cochin,coimbatore...chandigarh...hubli...mangalore etc...i mean small south indian states haveing SBKs???what do the DRI officials do abt them??
All said and done, it is a bike we are talking about here. Does one really want to potentially get entangled with the government agencies, liaising with middlemen, paying umpteen number of people off just to own an SBK by saving a few lakhs? That is in my books, a huge waste of time and resources. But again, what you do is completely left to you. No offence by the way
And please do not post in SMS language.
Very true. Once you pay so much upfront, your EMIs and the final interest that you end up paying is very little.Originally posted by Aparajith View PostWell said. @Akhil : I agree with you but one question , directly jumping to a 1000cc+ bike from a 150-200 cc , is it advisable? should a 1000 cc bike be your first sbk ?sigpicThe Moto Cafe - India's first bike theme cafe @ Chandni Chowk

I, personally don't see ANY reason why it should not! If you are a mature rider, then you sure can ride a 1000cc motorcycle. Whatever experience of riding an R1 I had was just after riding the P180 Classsic! I mean, I didn't get to ride a 600cc first and then ride the 1000cc.Originally posted by niks_devil666 View Post@Akhil : I agree with you but one question , directly jumping to a 1000cc+ bike from a 150-200 cc , is it advisable? should a 1000 cc bike be your first sbk ?
But, I really felt the 'big' bike to be nimble, ofcourse powerful and really user friendly (if I can call it that)!
P.S: That's my experience.Last edited by Aryan; 02-27-2009, 01:29 PM.:)

Niks am in no way qualified to answer ur question. But even my first stint with an SBK was a 99 model R1 for around 2 - 3 kms and I had no issues with it. Moreover be it a 600 or 1000, these beasts have enough power to kill u if u have a wring-happy right wrist. So does not make so much of a difference IMHO if ur a sane person. Akhil and Ken are THE BEST people for ur question though.
P.S: My earlier experience of a two wheeler before the R1 were Splendor and Kinetic Honda. Beat that!Democracy is when 2 wolves and a sheep meet to decide who is for dinner. Liberty is when the sheep has a gun.

I can only speak for myself about this. I was very careful the initial days of getting the bike. While it can be very forgiving when it comes to some smaller mistakes, whacking the throttle open, speed bursts on public roads, etc.. that is just asking for trouble.Originally posted by niks_devil666 View Post@Akhil : I agree with you but one question , directly jumping to a 1000cc+ bike from a 150-200 cc , is it advisable? should a 1000 cc bike be your first sbk ?
My view is, there is no set rule as to what engine capacity your first SBK should be. A sportbike, especially 600 and up, will require some amount of restraint and respect, so as long as you have that covered until you get to grips with the performance potential of the machine, things will be fine.
Well said Aryan. But the new Blade is even more nimble and user friendly than the R1, new/old. But that's another discussion altogetherOriginally posted by Aryan View PostI, personally don't see ANY reason why it should not! @Aryan/Aparajith/Akhil : Thanks for your inputs , I (I think) am mature enuf to ride any 1000cc+ bike but its just the fact that since I have never ridden one , feel that I might be underestimating the bikes potential.I think I have self restraint and respect for power and wouldn't be whacking the throttle open and will stay within speed limits and in control.
Thanks guys , now I can start channelising my thoughts

Rossiter time and again this has gone in my head, because I own a official import (read: car) but dont have any documentation regarding the duties. What would you do incase they confiscated the vehicle for no homoligation certificate/ bill of entry? Run to the dealer/company?Locking the front and flipping is the worst experience you could err experience.
