With regard to buying a legal or illegal please note that all the illegal dealers are now being raided on a regular basis by the DRI and most buyers of illegal imports will have to deal with inquiries from the authorities.

Most have a serious misconception that a liter class bike is difficulkt to ride around in traffic and least fun, etc
Infact it is actually the other way around, liter class bikes have their power band much lower on the rpm range which makes them more fun to ride in traffic rather than having to revv the tits off a 400 or 600 to enter the power band. By the time you enter the power band on a smaller bike you will mostly be stopping again.

That said, if I was in a country where I could swap bikes easily I would have started with a 400/600 to master cornering before I jumped onto the 1000 cc wagon.

A foolish rider does not need a liter class to get into trouble, even a moped would be reason enough.

That is in my books, a huge waste of time and resources. But again, what you do is completely left to you. No offence by the way
Exactly my thoughts. Superbikes are a luxury, and I certainly do not feel the need to takeup a tension/pressure upon me after spending so much money.

He would have a Tax Invoice from Yamaha India for the R1. The DRI would verify the documents, scrutinise the corresponding documents of import with Yamaha India. If all is in place the bike is returned with a letter of apology for inconvenience after a couple of weeks.

The above has happened a while ago with someone I know who had bought the f650 officially brand new from BMW India.

Pay the evaded duty and have your bike back. If you don't then they auction the leftovers of your bike after a few years.

I agree with Aryan here. I am sure the question would be should a 1000cc bike be your first and last SBK...because quite frankly, for most middle class people like us, we cannot afford two SBKs.

More than a mature rider, the word I would like to use is sensible. A rider would have as many issues riding a 1000cc sportsbike in city roads as they would a 600cc. In this day and age, the 1000cc are almost as lightweight as the 600cc bikes, and the 600cc bikes are no slouches. It is only after 250+ kmph the differences start appearing in the ccs.

+1 I would have done the exact same thing myself. Or I would have had both. A 600 supersports for the track, especially one like MMSC.

Yeah I believe Navnit Motors now ensures the paperwork for the F650 owners who need documentation.

But I have no such invoice for the R1, but am pretty sure I can obtain it from Yamaha India, complete with the chassis number etc. In case I need it that is.

As for getting the bike back, once it's seized, you need to pay the duty plus the penalty. At the minimum, this is what you'll have to pay.

Manav, same case as me I suppose. I don't have the papers regarding the import either, and am pretty certain we will have to get it from the dealer, who will in turn get it from the company. This is of course, if at all it is required.

But in light of recent circumstances, I think I'll get those papers from Yamaha as a precautionary measure. I wouldn't want my bike to be sitting in a DRI/Customs warehouse gathering dust and what not, until I get my papers in order. I suggest you do the same for your car too.

I wouldn't know about this, dude. A bump on the road that causes an accidental twist of the wrist will be far more fatal on an R1 than on an R15. Ofcourse, any pea brained rider will get into trouble sooner rather than later, but if he is riding an R1, then the potential damage increases manifold. That said, I agree with your point about the gradual progression to a 400/600cc motorcycle. Its for the same reason that I think this >800 cc import rule if nothing but BS. They either don't know or are just not concerned about how many people will kill themselves.

I somewhat agree with you, but the R1 would certainly be more stable than an R15 over a bump, so these smaller advantages are always going to be case sensitive.

The power from the newer 600s is more than enough to get the hormones going a little wild, a fool does not need a liter class bike to kill himself.

Agreed! I mean, people can't show decency on a 100cc, why a 1000 to make matters worse?

Ideally, it should be 500+ cc, and of course that includes cruisers too, since they are Litre+, and which Indian Manufacturer is getting threatened by this 500+cc... They can't even make a proper 250cc for masses!

While we are talking about it, Planning goes on in the Companies about future products. So, we do hope Bajaj/ Yamaha have something planned for us, that's NOT a CBU ...

Just for some info. There was a raid by customs officials in Pune in last couple of days. Some bikes were confiscated !!

The bikes of 2-3 dealers were on the list!

Like some of the members with experience on SBKs point out....
as long as you respect the power on these bikes...you ll be fine.
They are far more stable than smaller bikes anyway.
I upgraded from a kinetic honda to an R6. (dint realize this fact until someone on xbhp pointed that out)
anyway, so respect the bike....and it will return the favor.
And please take the legal route to acquiring one. You wouldnt wanna see her being touched by people who dont appreciate it.
