Seat( stock solo) for Sportsters ,came in yesterday.
Construction of workshop is again back to normal pace , after it was put on hold because of excavation bans in uttrakhand. Cost if building material went through the over night.

This is going to be 400sqmtrs of covered space. But looks like it will take few months before machines could be brought in.
But then this particular build will be long done. You're never lost if ya don't care where the road is headed

Re: Demonic Custom Sportster Build plan. WideassTurbo
These freaks at Harley, they think they are making a tank for battle.
I am just trying to recover from shock and labour of spending 7 hours straight , relentless effort at undoing one freaking nut.
Manual says 600nm opening torque. I pretty much went over 2500nm and the nut did not even budge a little. Neither it lost its head. This is one crazy mofo.

This front pulley nut. 1 7/8 inch.
I had to undo this on my previous sportster also for wide tyre . it did act similarly but then ,finally it gave up at sight of some truck crow bars and my 80kgf gravity hanging on that 2 meter crowbar.
This time nothing.
Big problem in this is , its gearbox shaft on which front belt pully is mounted. When u try to turn the nut , instead of opening , whole pully simply rotates and turns the gearbox shaft. Then there is a thing to do. Putting the vehicle in 1st gear. So that the pully locks up. Only the nut turns.
But this never works. Cuz official 600nm opening torque , it can turn the whole engine over very easy.
Thats why there is a pully locking tool that Harley sells for about 25k.
I obviously don't have it. Afterall last time I didnt need it.
Last time I locked the pully using a 2 incj C clamp hooked onto the tooth . it worked.
See what happened to that method this time.

It dreaming destroyed that whole freaking idea , along with destroying the C clamp.
But any way something had to be done. I simply can't put off this thing to wait for official HD pully locking tool.
So I set about making my own pully locking tool.
Here it is.

Using the already redundant exhaust bracket , finding a bolt that matched the tooth grove pattern. Weld the bolt in place . put the exhaust bracket back into the bike with whatever fasteners it came with.
And now put on that socket onto the bolt , elongate the leverage using some steel rod. Hang onto that ***** till she gives in. Hoping it won't break away the welding on the holding bolt.

Finally some luck.
But in process , this thing bent a 1 inch thick chrome moly socket adapter bar.
This ***** is bad.Last edited by dustom_99; 08-07-2017, 02:01 AM.You're never lost if ya don't care where the road is headed

Re: Demonic Custom Sportster Build plan. WideassTurbo
Wow. But i would count that as a negative. If it is prescribed at 600 Nm, then requiring 4 times that torque to open it means something isn't quite right!Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Wht would u do ? If its not opening in 600nm? Eventually younwill have to increase torque ,Even if I buy a pully locking tool. It will at most hold the pully in place and not let it rotate when torque to nut is applied. So in any case this had to be applied.Originally posted by The Monk View PostWow. And I know how HD people would have landed on that 600number.
Two reasons.
First they use AiR Impact wrench at factory , which although applies much less torque , but gives impacting( sort of hammering) action . kat-kat-kat-kat. That air tool hits the bolt several 100 times per minute before the bolt actually starts to rotate and open.
That air impact gun costs 122000/- here . I obviously won't go for it for just one bolt like that on the bike. I rather have several smaller and cheaper impact guns.
Secondly its the locktite they apply. It keeps hardening with age and only impact guns can dislodge it effectively.
Most of that 2000+ NM went into breaking off layers of locktite within threads.
My major problem was locking the pully in place . now that I have a bracket and pully locking/ holding tool. It has done the job nicely, next time I recon it would be a 15 minutes job.
There are hundreds of people in world who reported that they had to eventually cut off that bolt on sportster using a blow torch , some even destroyed pulley of their bikes.

Ah. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't questioning your action of applying more torque, but the fact that more torque was required at all. Though your explanation of the locktite cleared that up.Originally posted by dustom_99 View PostWht would u do ? If its not opening in 600nm? Though the last line again makes it sound bad for HD. If a lot of people face this problem does it then become a design deficiency? Do bikes of other manufacturers have similar complications for something as you say should be a 15 minute job?Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Our breed is like , well its just a freaking nut , we will get around it by hook or crook. And eventually everyone does , you just need to be stubborn.

Any way have ordered Bosch cordless impact driver . which will make mince meat of most of the fastners , probably still won't so this pulley nut .
