  • My RX100 Cafe Racer progress.

    Hi All,

Am reposting this since this got deleted due to the server crash.

Would request all members who had posted their own topic to recreate them if they have posted them on other forums / blogs. Xbhp did have a lot of valuable threads prior to the crash. Lets post as much as we can to get it back to the best biking forum.

Sunny : I am creating this topic which was also posted from Team-BHP. I would also be uploading the pics from Team-BHP since they were already resized. They have been watermarked with the Team-BHP logo. Please delete them if goes against the forum rules, and I will accordingly post new ones.

Hi guys, as you may know that the ECR project has been completed and its now time to start a new project. Having worked on the Machismo for atleast a year, we are now planning to work on a Yamaha RX100. We have already checked out a few RX100's and may finalise one this week. We were actually planning on another Enfield, but looking at our budget, we were not getting a 'right-brake' (or rather wrong, in enfield terms) bike. We were also looking at the RD350, but folks at home would kick me out if I even mentioned the words R and D. So that ruled out the RD350. There was no way we could look at other 4-stroke bikes since none have the cult status as any of these 3bikes. Hence the RX100.

Here are some of the prices quoted for the RX100 :
1989 RX100, single owner, silver color, all original parts, decent condition - Rs. 12,000
1994 RX100 - 2 owners, black color, parts missing and existing ones rattling, engine noise - Rs 11,000
1991 RX100 - This takes the cake. 5 owners, lots of parts missing and engine noise, pathetic condition - Rs (let it be, i'll keep it for the jokes thread)
There are somethings which I would like to know before we actually start with the work. I would also appreciate if someone could help us with the prices and availabilities of certain spares. Till everything is ready to be fitted onto the bike, the bike will be completely stock.

Unlike the ECR project, which was not planned properly and led to a lot of delay and changes, this one is gonna be planned first and then executed. Hence there may not be a pictorial progress in this thread. Maybe just the stock bike and then the final product. The design and the paint job have been finalised.

The things that we are looking at are listed below. Appreciate your responses if these are possible or not and what are the costs involved.

Alloy wheels : How much would 2nd hand Pulsar alloys - 17-in cost? or any 5-spoke 17-in alloys for that matter? Would these directly fit onto an RX100. If not, what modifications are required?
CBZ swingarm - I need to put a 100 or a 110 size rear tyre. Is it possible to mount it on the existing RX swingarm? Or do i need to change to a CBZ swingarm?
Front mudguard : How much does an original front RX-100 mudguard cost?
Proton silencer : Where and for how much will I get a Proton silencer for? I am looking for a good performance silencer. Can anyone advise on price and availability?

Will come up with more queries once we get the bike and start with the mods. Thanks in advance.

Did see a couple of other RX100's before zeroing up on this one. Almost picked up a crappy old one for 8k before a friend advised me against it.

So here starts the Yamaha Cafe Racer Project. And since it is from scratch, its definitely gonna be better than Team-BHP - The Definitive Indian Car Community (Pictorial Progress: V12's Cafe Racer Project! Updated pics!)

The current work planned on the bike is as below :
    - Parts to be fabricated : Single seat with cowl, double seat, rear-sets, clubman handlebars

    - Parts to be brought : larger headlight, speedometers, indicators, Yamaha logos

The bike is gonna be used as it is till all the parts are ready. Here are some pics of the bike. Please excuse the color

Ok, the parts are arriving faster than expected. We have got almost all the body parts that need to be replaced.

Depending on the availability, we may pick up an RX/RXZ silencer and a fibre mudguard. Have not yet decided which speedometer to go for. The original one costs around 750-850 bucks. Any idea how much does the Pulsar digital speedo costs and would it be a direct fit.

      Thunderbird Headlight
      Yamaha tank and side-panel logos
      Unpainted side panels
Indicators : These are a smaller version of the original Yamaha indicators

        1st July, 2008

The Clubman Handlebars are ready. A little skeptical about using them. May have to tweak them for strength. But are very comfortable on the wrists. The tank work is also completed. New mounting points for the tank and seat have also been made.

Next is to make the seat and rearsets.

        2nd July, 2008

Removed most of the anti-rust that was present on the wheels, fork ears, headlight, silencer. The front wheel is in very good shape, the rear wheel has a fair amount of rust. Will try to remove it if possible, else we'll change it. The silencer seems to be fine, but might have to rechrome it.

        12th July, 2008

Decided on 3.00-18 at the rear, since it wouldn't hamper the ride, performance and mileage. Almost picked the 100/90-18, but decided against it. We picked these yesterday:

        Front : Dunlop Zebra - Y Plus 2.75 x 18 (Rs 775) Rear : Dunlop Challenger 202 3.00 x 18 (Rs 950)

        19th July, 2008
The RX135 kick-lever has been fitted on the bike and it clears the silencer and the rear-sets.

The wheels, zinc-plated spokes and fibre mudguard have arrived. The wheels are HH 18-in wheels. The mudguard is painted black, but thats not gonna be the color of the bike, so the paint would be removed.

The double-seat along with the brake-light is also ready and the seat is quite comfortable.

Here's a photoshopped image of the initial plan on the bike. The 'clubmans' have given way to clip-ons now. Suggestions on paintjob most welcome.

Thanks deep. I'll post the pics once I find them. Nothing's done with the bike now. Its still opened up and lying in the garage since the painter is not free. Maybe another week and the work would start in full swing. Will post the pics as it progresses.

Another Cafe racer Project. I really liked the Bullet u did and im pretty sure this one will be a head turner too. I would suggest you to go in for the dark blue color instead of red with silver stickering, will look cool. Good luck!

^^hmm, colour suggestion from my side would be a really dark blue, almost black, metallic blue. The kind you find on some guitars - i guess thats the best i can explain it. Would cost a bomb though!

The red would look really fab :-)

Why clip ons on a cafe racer???

color suggestion >> pearl white with a red stripe running down the tank.. rest everything black...

the extended tank looks kind of odd

                      nice handlebar though
Chrome rims and bling ? get a real life !

Thats what we're mostly inclined towards i.e white and a red stripe in the center.

Anyways, since I am converting the electricals to 12v, would it be possible to install the P200 digital speedometer. What would be the costs involved?

p200 digi speedo console has those extra wiring for the other indicators like oil, chocked air filter, batt etc.. you can get a pulsar ug3 digi speedo console for around 1700 bucks which is basically the same minus the extra indicators as for the speedo reading part it would work if you get the speed sensor unit to be mated with the front wheel and sensor cable installed, not sure if the tacho would work.(installed the old analogue pulsar twin pod speedo unit on a kb100 and the rpm reading showed twice what it actually was!)

p.s. the sensor cable costs some 90 odd bucks and the speed sensor unit costs around 250-275 i think, bought it long back dont remember though.....the speed sensor unit is slightly more in width than the rx100 speed worm gear unit but not to worry it can be machined to the same width as the rx 100 as the extra width on the digi speed sensor unit of the pulsar acts as a space filler because the distance between the two forks of the pulsar is more than that the rx.
pic of the analogue speedo worm gear(pulsar)

Thanks a ton koolsun. Pardon my ignorance but UG3 Pulsar would be the current P150/180 with the digi speedo, right? So basically the tacho might work but not show the correct reading. What about the mounting points for the speedo? Are they easy to install on the RX?

how bout the speedo from the FZ16

it may clash with the overall style of your bike or might just add a different flavour to it

                              worth a look for sure
