It is one of the best things to own a 2 stroke bike. About the pain, i owned a Yamaha RXZ for 4 years and CBZ and An Apache after than my trips to the service centre were way less on the Yamaha just because it did not have niggling issues of both the other bikes. And when i say that i use the bikes really hard on poor roads, hard driving on highways and occasional stunting too. Only problem i face was worn out piston rings after 20000 kms in the Yamaha. But the Apache's rings were worn out after 10 k kms, CBZ's Clutch were gone in 8k kms. There is no extra pain involved in using a 2 stroker except higher fuel bills.Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

Pros
1. Mad acceleration (0-80)
2. Unintentional Pop ups
3. Nothing can be compared to low end torque of 2 strokes
Cons
1. 2T Mix petrol ( Good 2T Oil )
2. Frequent Visits to Mechanic or you should be DIY fan
3. Parts availability (Rx 100 parts are the most expansive after Ninja 250 r
( Except RD )

Advantage:
1. Rocketing initial pickup.
2. Light weight.
3. Racing sound, especially if you tweak muffler a bit.
4. RX maintenance is low, if regular servicing id done.
Disadvantage:
1. Pick up is pretty less when in doubles and bit of a pain in doubles.
2. Have to keep filling 2T oil, if oil pump malfunction or dries up then engine is gone.
3. When buying RX check for engine, if you find slight sound or doubt avoid buying.---------------------

Sorry @Prakhararya that I need to disagree with few things...
One can always use the side tankOriginally posted by prakhararya View Post1. 2T Mix petrol ( Good 2T Oil )
Well, Rx is almost a non maintainance motorcycle; No frequent visit to mechanic is required as...Originally posted by prakhararya View Post2. Frequent Visits to Mechanic or you should be DIY fan
- no tappets to be adjusted
- no timing chain adjustments
All it needs is oil change, filter cleanup, tighten cables & brakes about once in 3000 (per YMIS) or can yield upto 5K kms.
Which part are you talking about? Could you be specific? I find most parts are expensive when compared to B.A.L, but less than H.H or Honda.Originally posted by prakhararya View Post3. If you are trying to make a thought out/logical decision, then you shouldn't be buying an RX at all. Unless you are really a nut like most of us 2-strokers there is really no point.
It is indeed a good bike to do stunting on. But how would you manage the maintenance? Silly stuff like blinker stay (indicator rubber) is becoming difficult to find!
It maybe cheap to buy an RX but to run it its not cheap. In my humble opinion, you are better of buying an entry level four stroke.A lone amateur built the ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic...

+1; Pulsar 150 is good one to begin with; atleast, that's what most stunters in India use.Originally posted by NitinGirish View PostIt maybe cheap to buy an RX but to run it its not cheap. In my humble opinion, you are better of buying an entry level four stroke.
Add to that one more point, do you want to enjoy riding or stunting the bike often or spend time at the garage? Alternatively, you can avoid visiting garage by a complete overhaul that is bound to cost a bomb.Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

If you have a low budget then a used Pulsar 180 is your ticket. RX135s are getting expensive to buy when you WANT to buy and difficult to sell when you WANT to sell
Best is to buy one when someone else wants to sell so it works out cheap. Parts are available but can get expensive. Very robust engines and reliability issues are mainly due to incorrect operation and negligence.Kriss : 15.06.1981 - 11.10.2009

1. Most of us do know about sound or smoothness change when oil pump stops (side tank)........but what about him, he is novice in 2 strokes........so recommended him Premix (rather using tank to avoid damage and remain on safe side)
2. May be, in 90 % cases, Rx we get in market have some probs in them, may be cosmetically OK, but, not engine wise, so most people go for piston change, hence required frequent visits to mechanic
( I am agreed to your non maintenance part )
3. Regarding parts, i am talking about engine overhaul, or a service by best mechanic or at Y.A.S.S.........most parts are not available, or if they are, then at sky rocketing prices

RX the best in terms of maintenance, handling you can say a complete bike of the past even today this bike is respected after the big brother RD,its true that its difficult to find a well maintained RX if you are lucky you may land up with a good bike, spares you can say not everything available now days as things are fading as production is out almost 15yrs now but availability of spares is better compated to TVS Suzuki bikes.
Alot of duplicate stuff are being sold high priced as genuine ones not available in Co showroom's.I can say buying a 2stroke in todays time is like gambling if you have the cash buy spares also and keep it for future use.In short get addicted to RX

I ride an RX 135 4-speed to work almost every day. Its quick, light and flickable and has an exhaust note that brings pure joy to my ears.
When I got the bike about 3 years back, I rebuilt it with a new block-piston-rings kit, overhauled the crank, new suspension rims spokes tyres, paint etc. All of which cost me <15k then. The same rebuild today will be upwards of 25k because of the higher current parts prices, mainly of the block-piston and the tyres.
I have always used premix, simply because I do not trust the autolube pump, and am never sure if it is going to work every time I start the bike. I've had many problems with the electricals of the bike, have put in a new wiring harness, cdi, ignition coil, main coil, which have given the bike a very reliable makeover. Now I am not worried about stalling problems or spark problems because of the new electricals. Carrying around a spare plug, Motul and semi-new ignition coil also keep me prepared for any eventuality
Because I ride hard most of the time, there are bound to be some parts that need frequent maintenance and/or replacement, however, apart from the block-piston and conrod, the rest of the parts are not expensive. I go to my garage at least one Saturday every month for a check-up (a months running is about 2k kms), and get everything tightened before a nice wash and wax session. Chain lubing, brake and clutch cable tension, carb cleaning, air-filter check are all the only basic maintenance needed, which I can do myself, they are quite simple on this simple bike. There are scores of good two-stroke mechanics out there, and am sure if you ask the forum, you'll get the contact details of a number of them, including some forum members themselves
All in all, once the electricals and mechanicals of the RX are sorted out, without compromising on any parts that are old/liable to fail, living with the two-stroke is fun all the way. When I need to relax a bit, I simply switch to the '88 Bullet 350
Four strokes move my body, two strokes move my soul.

@John: As many suggested already, would not recommend RX unless you have time and money to spend with the bike. As we had a small chat during our G2G, the point I'm trying to make is, buying RX shall be like 'on the go' thing, but maintenance with respect to spares is not!
RX
Buying RX: Easy
Maintenance: Easy
Mechanics to repair: Plenty
Spares availability: Treasure hunt !
Price of Spares: Get surprised
Think again, there are other options suggested by others.
