  • Dream...Passion...and Restoration (RX 135, 5 speed)

    Friends,

It's time to re bore my dream, Rx135 5 speed. Its been 14+ years since I bought her. Till about 13 years I have no problem at all. No major maintenance so far. Fill the tank and ride peacefully. But now It's time to re bore and refresh her. I never thought i will start a thread, as I was a silent reader of this forum. This forum helped me in many ways through finding spare parts, introducing Bike enthusiasts, and much help from the veterans. I will be happy to share the information whatever I know during this restoration that may also help fellow members in need. I would like to mention truly that I do not know anything technically. So far I'm a commuter and having the passion to become a rider(After this restoration).

I would like to tell my heartfelt thanks to Sriramefunds for his help in clearing my doubts and helping me to find genuine spares.

I'm in the process of collecting spares. It goes on and on. This restoration will mainly be a engine refresh and little cosmetics too. I need your help too.

Will post the details after approval. TIA

          Thanks for the Approval .

Though I'm not a perfectionist like sriramefunds or aargee, I will try my level best to get genuine spares if not possible some locals too... . Pls bear with me.
Still I'm yet to find some parts too. Will come soon with the spares I bought so far and the details soon.

This is my bike before about 7 years. It was my first cosmetic change. Changed the rear shocks.Completely painted, chromed the spokes and other stuff and powder coated the Silencer. Now also the bike is more or less the same. though not very rusted, but it's time to do some stuff in the engine. Pls have a look.Click image for larger version

Good luck man, if you need any help with restoration, I'm here.

I need a goal in my life currently, I have nothing to do and feeling quite bored. I wish I could restore a RX135 from scratch and document every single step, so that others find no problem in restoring RX series in future. I guess some of you here could help me out with that, let's restore a RX together and document the whole procedure.

Everyday I did go to some shop or call some shop or search olx and what not. I would like to thank Sriramefunds for his time and help in finding important parts like bearings. He came with me one day to buy all those stuffs and guided me through photo for getting genuine products. I appreciate you Sriram.

All these parts are been bought from about 7 or 8 shops from yamaha dealers, GP road and local shops.

                      Still yet to buy

luggage carrier, Tail light assembly, switch assembly, lock set, Headlight stay and tools box - (optional) - As the old can be kept, not much of wear

2T oil, pistonpin, circlip,Oil pump - (must) - 2T oil no problem, Spoke to the reboring guy in vijaydeep. I will get those when i visit blr for rebore. Still i have no idea how to get the OE oil pump. Yet to source it.

Tank and side shields - (confused..!!!) - Old tank has a big dent. I need to go for a new set or do repairing the old tank. Twowheelers india in GP road can get it for me (maroon clr) But i'm planning to go for Bright mettalic redorange like the one i saw in steelbird helmet. Some devil's thought happening in me that I can paint the old tank with quality aerosol spray can by ME...!!!

Headlight stay, All rubbers - (optional) - One guy has all these but little expense. Have to think again.

Spares I bought so far - Rear fender, all cables, kicker assembly, rx100 silencer, Bend pipe, overhauling kit, wiring kit, engine oil, oil seal, all bearings, first over size piston, Yamaha logo and monograms, engine screw kit, Handlbar logo cover etc.

                            Re: Dream...Passion...and Restoration (RX 135, 5 speed)

The next day all the cosmetic fittings done. Four indicators, gear rod, Handlebar cover,Hand Grip,Headlight rim and reflector,New wiring kit, New lock kit etc... And I got my bike by night with everything done. The things pending was new seat cover , Tank cover and atlast PAINTING....

The next day I have removed the seat and gave to the lining guy and got it stitched with yamaha lines. It took him about 3 days as he did not have the dye. I insisted that i want with the line and waited and got the seat cover.

I want him to make a se through pouch on top of the tank cover to keep my mobile. I want that badly for GPS navigation. It was very difficult to keep the mobile in the pant and following the map by seeing , stopping then and there. He told me to make with mica. But at last it was not available to him, he made it with some transparent sheet and promised me to change when mica is available. Got the tank cover after another 2 days.

In between I have started the painting of tank and side shield. Yes.. I HAVE STARTED.

So far I have not folded my sleeve and anything on my own for my bike, I want to try my luck in painting.

Searched several forums, watched you tube videos and had the confidence that I will do the painting on my own. I knew that it will not be 100 % professional, but i would like to do it on my own.

                            Ordered PaintZoom compressor from Ebay.

Next.... PAINTING... (Will upload the pictures and process in next episode)

I know the risk of taking painting on my own. But i would like to do it. I will be satisfied with the above 60 % result.

I got the Paint Zoom compressor. Went to GP road to buy paints. Till now I donot know the exact procedure of painting vehicles except the knowledge i had by watching some you tube videos. But Took the risk and went ahead.

I enquired about the process in the painting shop itself. He patiently told about the process and bought the required materials.

                              The Materials...

                              1. Sad Paper ( and some other name too, forgot ) of various quality (220,600,1500 etc)
                              2. Nippon Paint RED ( 150ml)
                              3. Base Paint RED
                              4. Grey Primer
                              5. Metal Putty with Applying metal sheet
                              6. Clear + Hardener
                              7. Metallic Shining Powder to mix with clear
                              8. Wax Polish
                              9. Rubber Glove ( Did not used )
                              10.Cloth mask
                              11. Original Rx135 Sticker
                              12. Custom made sticker by me
                              13. Aerosol Clear coat ( !!!, Reason Later)

                              The Process...(as told)...and The mistakes...

                              1. Created the work space and collected the materials...

After that Applied the Metal putty ( This is where my mistakes started..explanations at the end ),

Did the Primer coat. Re touched putty and sprayed the primer again..

And the FINAL PAINT...2 coats... Mixed the clear with metallic powder and added the hardner. I did not get the bright red with metallic effect. So bought Plain red and added the metallic silver powder with clear .

                              The Mistakes....

Well, Till the final coating of the paint i was happy with my process and result. There were some excess paint, leaks and some solid sprays etc. I had the confident that i can remove those with sand paper and i did that too. But, there was two mistakes when i applied clear.

                              1. Mixing of the powder with the clear made the clear little white rather than 100% transparent that ultimately reduced the brightness of the RED COLOR.

                              2. I have not maintained the proper distance that is the distance between the painted surface and the spray gun. This was the huge mistake and the result was some rough solid spray then and there which i could not remove by sand paper.

So the result of about 75% bright red with not so smooth finish. The process finished.. I have done painting for my bike on my own.

But still, the quality bug inside me was itching....I need to do something to get rid of those mistakes.. What to do?

                              well...

Took the sand paper gain and grind all unfinished areas and removed the clear coat. Made the surface little smooth ( Of course all stickering gone !!) and this time applied Aerosol CAN clear.

This time made my own custom black sticker
