    Hi Guys,

Thinking of restoring my yamaha rx100 1995 which is lying idle for last five years after full paint job. Already started purchasing spares for her. Now in dilemma whether to do the restore myself or with the help of mechanic. Because after seeing you guys M motivated and in enthu to do myself.

    Query Approved

It would be great if you went through the many restoration threads on the forum and ask specific questions. This is so vague, that it makes it extremely difficult for anyone to give a helpful response
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

If you have all the required tools, go ahead and do it yourself. It is always better than anything. You will be learning many new things and also more enthusiastic. Moreover at the end of the day you will be fully satisfied with your work.

Don't do it in hurry. You will get confused and you will loose the enthu also.

Take your own sweet time & Start doing it by step by step. Only concentrate on a single item until it is fully fixed/restored.

Whenever you are in doubt or confused please post in this thread. The experts in this forum are always helpful and guide you properly on how to go ahead.

Front Mudguard: Please go for the usual chromed one. Which gives the originality and classic effect

Since you are restoring - it is better to replace all the bearings irrespective of if it is good or weak. That way you know all is new and can ride your bike with peace later on.

Re: Yamaha rx100 restoration starting as noob

All Gaskets are available, you need special tools to open the clutch, flywheel and forks, its better you do not invest in those now(just my suggestion)

Get the engine and front fork work outsourced, get some reputed mech to build the engine fully, including the crank and you supply the parts

Attacking the cycle parts is easy, I usually takes me a whole day to finish the re assembly of the bike with a sealed engine and wheels completed. It should take you the same amount of time. Do the tear down your self, so you will have an idea of what goes where. Get a friend helper to click pics videos of the dis assembly so you don't risk shattering the screen of your phone or soiling it. Get small plastic bags(pouches) and a marker to label each part. once everything is tagged and bagged, make a list of things which needs to be zinc dipped and take pics before you give them for dipping. Change all oil seals, no matter how good they look, change all bearings, especially the crank, bottom/top end and wheel bearings. Change the reed and clutch plates for sparing you from troubles later, get new kicker boss, change all cables. Replace the oil tank if its cosmetically bad, replace the petrol tank instead of repairing it(you will thank me later on this)

Restoring 2 stroke bikes are no rocket science, if you follow the manual to the last letter, make sure all wearable items are within company specified tolerances.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask and people on this forum would help.

                            1. Gabriel make rx shockers do nicely. Stay away from the new escorts type.

                            2. Use a chrome mudguard. Metal trumps plastic in classyness always.

                            3. There is no paper gasket between the cases. If you have leakage, fix the mating surfaces. Use any liquid gasket maker like anabond to fix both the cases. Change all oil seals and other packings as well.

                            4. As a rule of thumb you should change the main bearings everytime you open the engine. Get the crank rebuilt properly.
