Yamaha RX 100 Restoration (The Legend Alive)

Introduction

After a long wait and hunt with a lot of desperation, acquired an 1994 RX 100 yesterday.

Details about the Bike

- Model 1994 year manufactured.
- Second owner.
- Insurance and FC not till date (Pending)

Bike Health Condition

- Engine is in good condition with its original beat condition.
- Rev and Performance are excellent.
- Brakes, wheels, mudguard, crash bar are almost in scrapping condition.
- Carburetor 36L00 says Made in Japan.
- Complete electrical yet to checked as the battery is not present in bike.
- Toolbox missing
- Found kicker assembly had been welded.
- Frame looks rusted in some places (Tinkering required).

- 2T oil tank present however they were not used.
- Chain drive and sprocket are not in good condition.

- Recheck frame for bends and tinkering in some areas (Sand blasting if required).
- Painting - Frame, Front forks,
- Chrome Plating - Spokes, handle bar, headlight stay, silencer.

(Suggestions Required)

I am planning to change the color of the bike from Black to Wine Red.

As all the documentation work is pending, should I stay with Black to get the FC done or proceed procuring Tank and Side Shields in Wine Red ?

Note : Color of the Bike is Black in RC Book.

Welcome to the gang, You can change the colour during FC, I was about to suggest to go for Genuine New tank and side covers. There are Delhi replicas available, stay away from them.

Post some pics for us to really comment on the condition.

I suggest buy new parts instead of plating. Rim, spokes, silencer, carrier, break pedal, headlight stem etc. As plating will cost you near to new ones price and cant say on the quality of the plating also.

As Pramod told, you can change the color during FC. But take the pics and keep it with you with engine no and chasis no before starting disassembling. You have to take the alteration receipt from RTO for color change. Try to procure all OE parts only.

vimal - Was thinking about the chrome plate because some of the parts have recently been replaced by the old owner. I will follow your suggestions as I wanna do every single thing legally and genuine.

I have also got a brief idea from Sriram on how to start the rebuild. I am still riding his bike virtually in my dreams everyday !!!

Vimal, actually the rates are very low in TN, unless he is taken for a ride, one of my friend told me re chroming a silencer costs him 200. That way its way too economical, here we have to pay 1100

Yes. I had my pockets already burnt. You remember I did that chrome plating for silencer and carrier. Now The joints have started rusting. I paid around 1.8k for both and no quality even after paying so much.

If its that kind of less cost for chroming in TN, he can close his eyes and do it. But still i recommend to go for new spokes as it will be around 250 bucks for the set.

I usually buy new spokes and give them for chrome. That way its easier to retain the strength while you can chrome them, old spokes loose their thickness when they use sand paper to clean the pits.

Welcome to the club for any help you can PM me as i just completed my restoration and on the change of colour i would suggest you to get the FC done and then do the change of color as chennai RTO are seeing it minutely if you doing by urself. If you are going by the brokers then you will need not to worry as they will take care of it.

Thank you Isqh. I approached few brokers already to enquire abt the process and cost, they said it's not a big deal as they can do it vise versa and would cost approx 4k.

All they need is RC Book and Form No.28 duly filed.

What bore is it running on? I mean the series? Before chroming the silencer it is better to get it decarbonised, as you were telling there is a lot of smoke.

Its is G-2 Bore Kit.

De-carbonize is definitely required as the bike was left unused for a long time. When I first fired the engine, it pumped out a lot of black oil through the silencer and exhaust with white smoke.

Just make sure to be there when your silencer is being decarbonised, original RX100 silencers are in great demand today and many mechs just replace it with other ones.
Are you planning to go for wine red? Also check out the original cherry red colour of 100. I guess wine red came with 135??(experts correct me if i am wrong) there are very few cherry red ones now. Attaching pic for reference.
