  • Restoring a 1995 Shaolin.. Need Inputs.

    Hello Everyone,

Last year I managed to find a stock TVS Suzuki Shaolin with just 30K on the dial. It's owner worked in the TVS hosur factory and had shifted to Chennai and the only long distance trip he had done was to drive from hosur to chennai when he had shifted. All this with a real bargain price tag of 3K made me close the deal at 2.7K!!!

Here was the catch: she hadn't been used for almost a year and was left standing outside the house exposed to the harsh madras weather. This had left the bike to look like a cosmetic wreck!

With the help of my friend i towed the vehicle to my friendly neighborhood mechanic in Triplicane. When we started to strip her down to examine its condition, things started to become clear.

The Tank had collected water from downpours and had caused it to rust and this had compromised it's ability to hold fuel. we fixed it with some M-seal and installed a fuel filter from the tap to the carb. Next we changed the Rims and spokes to HH splendor ones. Next was the meter. The RPM meter and the Odo were in perfect shape but was given for a gen checkup and resetting the meter. the guy who fixed it had confirmed that it was indeed a OEM and hadnt been tampered with. We chucked the old battery which had already leaked and replaced it with the maintainance free stuff. Next came the clutch plates, which was changed to the MAX100R due to unavailability of OEM plates. What came next was surprise for us. We decided to drain the engine oil and replace it with Valvoline stuff which my friend had recommended. The Drained oil was free of particulates and was practically brand new!! We filtered it just in case and filled her up with the "old" oil and attached a test bottle with fuel and kick started the beast and she responded to our calls Quickly! after a quick spin we were surprised at the engine response and the way she ran. There was not a slightest Indication of any bore noise or another malfunction.

After 400 odd kilometers i rested her in my garage only to be long forgotten thanks to my college and frequent outstation trips.

when I returned after 8 long months, I almost felt tears rolling down my eyes. She was covered with dust. Her Indicators were broken. Her meter was shot. All this with the vandalism of my neighbor's pesky kids had left her scratched and destroyed cosmetically (yet again).

Now that I am back in town, I'd like to restore her back to stock form. This includes painting and a engine job. I'm planning to take her to a kind of popular mechanic here in mylapore who own a track racing team but with my budget stuck at 12K i am not sure how much he'd charge for the engine alone.

I'd Like some inputs such as what to change and where to source these from. I'd also like to know if there is any Digital CDI which can be adapted to my long ignored steed!

Any Help would be appreciated guys!

Just forget about what that old oil looks like dude... and change it!! Anyway, sorry to hear about the vandalism. Such kids should be... shot! But why are you considering engine work? The kids haven't are unlikely to have done anything there, right?

          hi racoon,

I have done 400 odd km on the bike with the old oil . . I was planning to open her up just to check on the internals. I also forgot to mention that the carbs were kinda screwed by the old mechanic and used to result in a kind of choking feeling when she hit 6000 rpm . Got her checked up by the mech who owns the racing team and got it set and she used to rev like a beast ....

Expect her to return back to her old state soon ...

          Cheers,
          Ragav

P.s . Yeah would get back at them kids if i had the chance ...

Your bike never run like a shaolin it will run like a MAX100R there will we be huge drop in performance change to OE plates, i know its diffucult to source but you have no choice either

@psycho: Yes I know that the Max 100R stuff suck !! I'd lucky if I could source the OE clutch plates.

FYI, there is no 1995 model shaolin ever produced. The shaolin was launched in 1997.

@psycho98 - The shaolin/shogun/max100/ax100/samurai and also the Fiero share the same clutch plates. The only difference is that the older ones were japanese ones and costed 1.4k. Now they are much cheaper and china made, yet they last almost the same. In terms of performance, I have not seen any difference as such.

You mean the "TVS Genuine Part" packed clutch plates are made in China?? Werent the original Suzuki plates made of fiber? And current TVS plates are made of cork, right? Are you sure they last and perform the same???

They are sourced from the same land.
They perform the same, however dont last exactly the same.
On a Fiero, the Jap ones would last a good 10k kms under real hard abuse, this one will start fading away at around 8k kms. These plates would hold over 22 horses on my Fiero 200, its just that I would change them every 3k kms.
The RTR plates are also not jap, however they last a solid 25k kms under whatever abuse u throw at it. My RTR has clocked 22k kms with plenty of racing abuse and still runs on OE plates and still pops thru gear shifts and not a sign of a slip yet. Its got the best clutch in the country.

Glad to hear that! Esp. when the Suzuki plates are going for around 1,500 now. The TVS ones for around Rs. 200! So even if they have 80% life compared to the Suzuki ones, they make much more sense, as long as performance is not affected.

consider this, you get these plates for 180 bucks. They last easily 10k kms under sane riding. I said 8k with mad riding on a stock engine. So for 1500 bucks you can run nearly 8 sets which will last u 80k kms over the jap ones. FYI, the jap ones are no more made and its a waste of money to buy them anymore. Some dealers sell them at a premium and fools buy them considering its some pot of gold.

@ all: Thanks for the info. The bike is 97 and not 95 as stated. It was purchased from Zen motors in B'lore. Thanks joel for pointing it out. The Bike had 30K on the dial when I bought her. She is now running on standard. The only mods I had done were using the Gun's Handle bar and silencer as they had rusted away. The wiring had also been screwed up by my older mechanic.

I am planning to approach a certain Guru Autoworks in Mylapore, Chennai for restoration. My budget is 15K incl of painting. I might add a RTR disc if bdget permits. I will Post Pictures of the vehicle in it's current state tomorrow.

OT: I visited Pudhupet today to meet some old friends and learnt about the police raid some time back. Any Info on this?
