  • A practical guide to buying & rebuilding Yamaha RX

There is quite a bit of information in this section on the topic. The objective of this thread is to put them all under one thread to aid new comers to the world of RX.

I am no expert and earnestly request the more informed members here to positively contribute to this thread.

Many of us desired to own an RX but could not when the bike was in production. While the rest of the world has moved on, the RX has come to a dead end.

Though I have zero technical knowledge, I would like to enlist few broad points to help you make a decision regarding buying an RX.

    Prices & Finances

Being something fanciful it's prices are also like that RX100, RX135 4 & 5 Speed & RXZ 4 & 5 Speed are the most popular ones. Approximate minimum price for running condition bike in Bengaluru:-

    RX100 - 10-12K
    RX135 4S - 20-22k
    RXZ 4S - 25-30k

Please note nothing is written on stone here. It possible to get one for cheaper or way costlier too. It depends upon the condition of the bike & frankly your urgency.

RX135 & RXZ 5 Speed are the most powerful of the lot and costliest too. Additionally, spares are most difficult to comeby. Don't be offended or shocked if somebody asks for Rs.50k for a 5Speeder.

RX100 spares are relatively easy to get hold of.

When you think of buying an RX, you should also budget for spare parts. Not only for the re-build but also for future use. You would need atleast Rs.12-15k (including cylinder kit, transmission related spares, chasis, etc)over and above rebuild costs for stocking up for the future. In all, you would need about Rs.40-Rs.50K for the entire project.

Ofcourse you can cut corners and reduce the budget too. I am taking A.S.C prices here.

    Buying
A place like Bengaluru is over-priced and avoid buying it from here.

Be patient. Some of our members have waited for upto an year for the right bike. If you are looking for your first and only bike, this is not the one for you. Unless you want to tow the 'I have passion' line.

If you have any acquaintance in an Government office request them to put a word around in their office. Their papers are usually clean. However, bike would be abused by negligence.

If you have any aquaintance in private companies request them to post an advert in their internal message board.

Looking in smaller cities/towns if you have friends/family there will help you get a good deal.

Approach a dealer only as a last resort.

Finally, have a look at the efforts made by some of our members in buying & rebuilding RX.

      Rebuild

Do not start the rebuild without procuring all the spare parts. Dismantling the bike and waiting indefinitely for spares is not a fun thing to do. Like I said, don't rely on this bike exclusively. Have a regular 'in-production' bike.

Firstly, refurbish/restore the chassis. See if there are any bends and get it rectified appropriately. If the damage is beyond repair, (you shouldn't have bought it in the 1st place) you can buy a new one at Rs.3500. But do not forget to get RTO approval. Yes, it is mandatory lest you want to be hauled up by the police for riding a stolen bike

Old paint should be completely removed and three layers of coating is done. Members here will be able to detail it properly.

Other cosmetic stuff can come later if you are on tight budget.

Spend your money on engine & transmission parts first and if there is still money left you can go for a complete cosmetic makeover.

Also, examine the quotes you get carefully. Sometimes, it makes sense to replace a part than to get them painted. If it is a particularly old bike in 'not-so-great' condition it is better to replace fuel tank & side panels. A good quality paint job will end up costing as much as a new one.

Same logic applies for chroming too. Examine the parts and if its in a bad shape its better to replace silencer assembly, shocks, etc.

If you want to carry out performance modifications, please read some literature on it. If your knowledge level/skill is, like mine, limited to opening and shutting of fuel lid then avoid it.

I will post more points as and when I remember. Hopefully, knowledgeable members pitch in.

It would have been nicer if members pitched in with info regarding tyres, spark plugs, paint, powder coating, 2T oil, etc.

Continuing from the earlier posts, please do invest money on a good torque wrench and a set of feeler gauge. Go through the service manual (available in this section) to decide upon the specifications.

Improper tightening torque on bore/head can lead to low compression & loss of power. It would also help in preserving threads.

Good initiative. I would like to add one thing that shouldnt be overlooked is investing in a good chassis and engine screw and bolt kit.

Most of the bolts/screws are number 10 and a few a number 12. Some people do sell engine bolt kits as a whole, which contain new nuts for the cylinder, head, bolts for engine mounting, and even little items like the adjustment tensioner on the clutch and brake levers.

Just make sure that the quality of plating and screws is good, otherwise better to use old bolts from the original bike.

A new spanner and socket kit will also help keeping heads undamaged during tightening.

more points to come.. as everyone updates..

              Mine is also rebuild.

As i have also rebuild my RX 100.Here are some points which i want to describe from the mistakes and right things i have done in the procedure of rebuilding this machine.

              1. If you have less cash reserves as i do , don't ever make ur mind to go for non oem parts because they are less in price as compared to authorised company one's (because if u rebuild ur machine through these aftermarket parts i will surely bet that u have to change in a month or two then u woulld probably go for company original parts as i do and then think i would have done this previously)

              2. If u does'nt know any good mechanic then never ever believe on other's suggestion " that this mechanic is good and blah blah blah ".If u dunno know it then ask it here and if u don't get a satisfactory answer (which is 99.9 % impossible) then take ur bike to authorized service centre , b'coz don't think it as other bikes , it'z yamaha RX ___ mate .

              3. Always use 2t mix petrol , never rely on 2t pump. And if possible make 2t %
from 2 to 3 or add some YAMALUBE 2T (if u dunno know any better one than this is perfect and economical too.)

              4. Don't never ever think of using a k & n in RX b'coz it simply gives u sound and ruin ur engine (probably carburetor or piston due to dust entering through it).

              5. Run this machine only on full company settings and never ever add any aftermarket part in it otherwise u will have to do what is stated above.

              6. Don't think of others concern that use this or that in this bike b'coz any thing u found right to be than only use it.

As of now i m only able 2 cover only this much part b'coz this whole is learned from the mistakes i have done.

Remember always that u r riding a YAMAHA which is more than 10 years old , through this stage only some can survive . It'z a machine that always takes ur care if u takes him's (it's definitely male).Ride this machine and fel it's beat through ur heart and then ur said to be a true yamaha lover.

At last i want to thank NITINGIRISH for starting this wonderful initiative.

RIDE SAFE . RIDE THROUGH UR HEART.

Maybe a tip that would come in handy - except for those with some really deeeep pockets

I would say buying a shot 5speeder for 30K or so is a waste. You can get a decent 4S - even in Bangalore - for about 20K - cosmetically shot but decent engine - plug around a bit and get it done up to a nice 5 speeder.

Great Initiative Nitin , maintaining a Yamaha RX series is different and restoring is again a complete different procedure.

My One Cent - If you trying to restore any RX series bike do make sure that you have all the spares with you before you get the bike dismantled. And make sure that those spares are original in every sense. There are many after market products which are available and they are cheap as well, but then they dont last long. Go for originals and then get it done.

For restoration one has to be very careful. Strip the bike completely to make it new from its core.

Its a great thread would be keeping an eye on it....
