I had just finished my 9th grade and was enjoying the holiday season. My school was about 50 ft from my house. The ICSE results were published and my seniors had come to school to collect their marksheets. So I had gone to my school and heck it was one fine morning for that was the first time I heard of the RD. The guy who told me about this bike had no idea about it. All he knew was "it has two exhaust and two engine",that being the typical way of describing an RD..two engines..lol!!
And me being the guy I was ,went online and started searching for more info about this bike.I had no idea of its name and I still remember my search entries on google .."yamaha twin engine bike", "Powerful Yamaha bike in India" ..lol what was I thinking!! :P
Ironically that months issue of AutoIndia had a small article about a Yamaha bike which was sold in the 80's and that it was the most powerful bike back then. Only then I knew that the bike was called Yamaha RD350. Call it coincidence but the same week as I had read that article I was cycling towards a stationery shop to get something, and ahead of me ,in the opposite direction I see this Yamaha approaching. I was able to identify the bike as a Yamaha and thought it was an RX. And I kept cycling. The bike crosses me.I kept cycling. But something in my mind says that this particular "RX" looked a little bigger than normal and sounded different. And I turned to look. Voila. My first ever glimpse of an RD..Still remember that sight of two smoking exhausts!!
Fast forward two or so years and I got my first bike which I still cherish (and mod :P) . It was the pulsar 180Dtsi V1. Yes I was underage by a few months but boy did I fall in love with this baby the moment I saw her on the pages of OD sept 04 issue.I still remember lines from the twin roadtest OD had carried out that month. And once I got the bike I was happy with it for about 4 months. Then started the itch for more power. I installed a K&N back in 04. Had no idea about rejetting..and lost top end power drastically.Ran from pillar to post trying to sort stuff out. Badri, an old timer from xbhp came to my rescue and introduced me to Vivek of Tectrac racing. I had gone to meet Vivek for the first time. And that is when I saw an RD for the second time in my life..only now I was actually able to touch her!! I knew instantly that I had to own one in my life..and soon at that!!
Fast forward to 06 or somewhere around that time:
I was having the time of my life on my modded pulsar.yes this is the same bike that was running the tectrac exhaust and had article here on xbhp before the server crash..and 2006 was quite a year..I was selected for flight training by KFA and was asked to go to the USA to complete my training with Sabena Airline Training Center (shout out to anybody from there) ..It was also by this time that my search for an RD was in full swing. But since I left to the states by mid 07 my search came to a sudden halt. A year and a half passed and I had almost forgotten about the RD. I returned in 08 and my search didnt really start off again. It was 09 when by the time I started my search.
By this time I had a clear idea on my mind. I did not want a bike which was already done up. I wanted a junk bike or something unrestored for me to work on. By this time I had also got to know Mr Rajkumar of Raju brothers fame. My search was proving to be futile atleast here in Chennai where only restored bikes were available.until one fine morning when I find an unrestored bike for sale in Nagpur. I call up the guy immediately and the deal is done within a matter of minutes. A whole 8 or so years of search came to an end within seconds. And the sweetest part of the deal was..I was buying two RD's from the guy. Talk about lady luck!!
and that my friends is the story of finding my RD or wait RD's !! PART II will be restoration story

...lady luck sure was on my side..the seller had wrongly advertised it as "RD350-400 DG heads"..so those who are searching for RD 350 parts or RD 400 parts wont get to see this..a few years of ebaying and you'll know the insiders trick to finding great deals like this one. But wait if you thought I paid 450$+50$ shipping to India your very wrong. Now that I knew nobody would notice this advert I sent a message to the seller. I offered him a price of 300$ shipped to India..and his reply " go see the price clearly 300$ it is NOT" ..he seemed quite pissed..I wanted to pay the 450 and pick it up but since he seemed a little arrogant with his reply I thought il play a little game with him and take a chance. I knew noone would buy it cos it was advertised under the wrong section. And I waited till the last day of the auction. Just an hour before auction end I sent him a mail saying im still interested and he goes " go rip someone else not me" ..two days later out man comes back saying " ok bro Il sell the heads to you" ...LOL ..that was sure fun and I ended up saving some chump change there..they say fortune favours the brave..heck yeah it does
