A new year, it was the first day of the year and what a beautiful day it was! No! We didn’t wake up before the morning was well and truly set in, a certain Old Monk ensured we slept well and till late  The sky was blue, the sun was shining bright and everything you could see outdoors was covered with a thick blanket of snow. The bulldozer that has been clearing up the snow from the Shimla-Kufri road was doing its routine. Now, these things make the situation worse IMO as clear up the soft snow on the top (which provides some traction) and exposes the hardened iced out surface which generally takes up to a week of hard sun to melt completely. There was no question of riding ahead as no one made any effort to clear road ahead too much, towards Theog that is! A little walk yesterday was enough to convince us we wouldn’t be able to make much headway in that direction without significantly limiting the lifetime of our machines (and ours). It was only after lunch that we decided to check where the ponniewalas where ferrying hoards of tourists since morning. Oh! Kufri was back at its best (or worst) as the weather had cleared up. Endless tourists from Shimla (most probably) were queuing up somewhere below to ride a ponnie and slip and slide their way up to somewhere on the Chail road.
As Salil’s Koryo dutifully kept drying more things off (a la Salil’s under wears I guess) even after working all night long, we headed out for some snow-hiking. Loads of photographs were clicked on the road which heads to Chail! In between, Dixit met a nice far Labrador who gladly licked his hands, jeans, knees (and face too I think)! Once past the tourist point, next to a resort, we found a pair of footmarks, deeply engraved in the snow heading out in the woods. Voila! We followed! A long hike through mostly knee deep snow, sometime up to thigh, ahead we went following those lone pair of footprints. No crowds, no ponnies and their owners – just the forest, the ever-present snow and us! Videos and photographs were clicked in their dozens. The trail finally led us to the main NH 22 and the descent was pretty dramatic. Dixit lead the way to the final descent, slipped and ended up kissing the snow (uninjured thankfully) which Salil duly photographed. I too had a moment or two and went ass first into the snow a couple of times before making it out of the woods, literally and into the highway. Just we had finished our laughs; the sun was about to set and the panoramic view of Himalayan peaks which we were facing…click click click! Tomorrow we ride home, so no more alcohol! Went to sleep praying that the weather stays clear (IMD said it would) ….little Koryo hair dryer was still working.
Photos from the day. ..more photos to follow:
Thats my bike, Ivy, the Unicorn!
