    Namaste and welcome to India.
Good luck with a speedy customs clearance your wonderful BMW R1200GS Adventure. (well your adventure ride starts from customs)

For Carnet, if all your documents are in place & your clearing agent is good, you can clear it in one day. From my experience in Cochin Seaport the officers were very friendly and they dont create too much problems for Carnet imports. You have to take signatures from about 5-6 customs officers from different departments. For customs inspection, just be prepared to show them the chassis no below the handle bar and your engine number. MOST important is that before leaving with your bike make sure your original carnet book has the customs stamp & DATE of import on it, coz they will check that when you are leaving the country.

Congrats gq37 for your first ride in India. Saw the video and that engine sound seems all too familiar to me...Seems like you have already picked up the indian style of riding.

Also, while overtaking a large slow moving bus/truck, be careful that pedestrians/bikes/cycles may cross the road just ahead of the bus (your blindspot) not anticipating you overtaking the bus & coming in their way.

Ride safe and waiting for more updates.

please map your bike ECU for taking on 91 octane petrol if the same is possible. 97 octane is a rare thing in india limited to big towns only.

                    ....
BMW has an option to calibrate the Electronic control unit ( which also controls the fuel injection ) to take on a lesser octane petrol. now u are in india please dont worry about it and enjoy the trip.

may be you can mail your insurance company home for a cover for your india trip if you feel the need.

                    enjoy the trip.

they will not check a foreigner on a foreign registered bike in india. dont worry on that count. just keep your bike import papers and your entry papers, which you must be having already.

I am surprised on the insurance. The only problem they had with my foreign registration was their computer software would not accept my saudi registration starting with BB as it is programmed for Indian state registrations such KA, TN, AP, DL etc, but they managed to bypass that. My indian insurance policy maybe in my saddlebags on my bike which is on a ship right now. Anyway I will also ask my wife to check if there is a copy at my home in bangalore and if so I can email you a scanned copy of it so you can show it to one of their own branches at your location & insure it from there. For local address, you can give the address of your hotel. Ofcourse, if the bike was in bangalore, you could directly go to the place where I did it from & give my reference. The guys were very co-operative. Anyway, if your present policy is fully in German language, till you get Indian insurance, if police ask you show & tell them it mentions international cover in German (they dont know much about these things & wont bother you further!). But I suggest you get the Indian 3rd party policy as soon as possible.
